    It's surprising how little this ship is known, given the fact that it paved the way for the famous Olympic class, which is mostly famous because of the Titanic... pretty much every bit of cutting edge technology, engineering and luxury that Titanic is praised for, was on this ship 6 years before

    After the First World War, Adriatic returned to the Southampton route from September 1919 until December 1921, serving the route alongside the Olympic (from June 1920 when Olympic returned from her refit).

    I don't find the Big Four as attractive on the outside as other White Star liners but the interiors: wow! Imagine them in color---and imagine being there in real-life. There was such beauty and workmanship. An unusual arrangement that supports for the deck above went through so many of the tables in the First Class dining room. Was that a pipe organ at the back of the room? I believe it was the City of Rome and the City of Paris that had organs in their own First Class dining rooms because those spaces were also used for church services and I would imagine for musical entertainments also. Thank you to Harland & Wolff for documenting so much and so well thank you to you, Olympic WS for sharing these outstanding photos with such beautiful musical accompaniment.

      It would be an interesting project to take on to start work colorizing all these old ship images. It would probably take ages and involve a large team of people plus lots of funding, but the results would be amazing. I can dream, can't I?

      My thoughts exactly - "imagine them in colour". Just stunningly gorgeous interiors.

      Collect the Money and perhaps you can build a replica as a museum vessel of the period.

    Thanks for the upload of a forgotten ship. Judging from the photos, Cunard's Mauritania & Lusitania were more advanced with their interiors and externally they were more handsome, though the Adriatic was still far better looking than the hideous "condos" that pass for ships these days although at least the QM2 has some style and harks back somewhat to the golden age of liners.

      @Cosmic Max Yeah, "ocean liners" in the old sense, are a thing of the past. Business people (before Covid-19) just take the planes to get them from NYC to Europe in 7.5 hours or so. It's only Cunard's 3 queens to day that pretend they are still "ocean liners" when, in fact, they are a hybrid of liner and cruise ship. The concepts have blurred into one in the 21st century.

    Seems that the interiors of Olympic and Titanic were advanced versions of Adriatic. But I remember reading that the Oceanic of 1899 was really the most elegantly decorated and somehow the Olympic/Titanic were compromised in their interiors, as if the White Star Line had budget issues. Curious, too, how the latter 2 ships were almost identical inside, while Cunard made their sister ships have their own identity. The Italian Line in the 50s and 60s decorated their sister ships very differently, except for the staterooms.

      WSL did not hire outside design firms...same interior designers worked on every ship/with H/W. Lounge/Library from Teutonic...Majestic...Oceanic...Big 4...Olympic class....all slight variations on the same. Smoke Room design finally changed with Adriatic....all the ships before for 15 years were near same....Olympic class was virtual same as Adriatic....repeating theme with WSL....keep a winning and similar formula so each ship feels very similar to the other. I do love the Oceanic's two story Saloon décor....very gothic. The Big 4...I love the stained glass of their 2 story saloon....very different and very effective. Adriatic's new Smoke Room stained glass panels, however, take the cake....and Olympic made it even better by getting rid of the padded bench seating!!! Could go on and on....improvements came slowly for WSL for decoration...my fav room...Olympic Smoke Room!

    • @radamik
      @radamik 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My favorite design elements on Olympic/Titanic were the rococo light sconces in the lounge and the chairs in the restaurant with their canework sides. And the stateroom that looks like British arts & crafts with cool wainscoating and chairs, probably oak, and the small lamp with the floppy velvet shade. Wonder if every stateroom scheme on the Olympic was exactly duplicated on the Titanic.

    Man, the designs of ships in the past like Mauritania and Olympic are a lot more attracrive than current ship designs. The past designs were much more elegant and you can tell a lot of thought, hard work, and care were put into these ships, while today, cruise ship look like bigger versions of ferries. (No offense, I know how much work thought and care were put into these ships too).

    • @radamik
      @radamik 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hate most of the cruise ships today, clumsy looking exteriors, gaudy (and cheesy) inside. But I’ll give credit where it’s due: on the “Harmony of the Seas” (can’t they give ships real names!) - some of the cabins have these cool abstract wall decorations that reminded me of the days when ships were expressions of the contemporary art of the countries that created them.

    a sad lack of foresight. Could these ships really not have run for a good number of years longer, or was it the case that the hulls were going to cost more to maintain? They'd make a killing if there was even just one in this style surviving today.

    • @doctoremil2678
      @doctoremil2678 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not that surprising, actually. Do you know how much it would have costed to restore a ship of that size?

  • @mustangmike4078
    @mustangmike4078 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The hull looks very much like a scaled-down version of the Olympic class.

      In fact, features like a gymnasium, a Turkish bath and a swimming pool (the first one ever on an ocean liner) were tested on Adriatic before being installed in the Olympic-class liners. Adriatic was also commanded by Captain Edward J. Smith and she also inaugurated White Star Line’s Southampton to Cherbourg to New York service.

  • @gilzor9376
    @gilzor9376 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Who knew?! The Adriatic would serve in WWII, against the Allied Forces . . . . . she was scrapped in Japan in '35 and probably got put into the steel for a new battleship.

  • @tylerchristensen7434
    @tylerchristensen7434 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The "swimming pool" was never called a swimming pool, it was something like a plunge bath. Not a swimming pool but close enough I guess.

    • @globial5329
      @globial5329 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't matter. People are just tryna know what the items are, and not confusing vocabulary. Besides, people will just point out how it's basically a pool in their mind. Giving people new terms will just confuse them.
