It all depends on game design. That's why it's important to understand what the story is and how to tell it through the game play. For example, a question I have about the game Titanic Honour and Glory is, will it give the player access to enter any passenger room?? If you do that then the writer and creative team have to do a lot more work filling those rooms with personal belongings and stories. It would be a lot of work that can be greatly cut down if the player only gets to enter a few. In this sense you are limiting the world and full experience by keeping a more linear path. It's a trade off and you will have to find an alternative means to enrich the story elements. Titanic is very challenging to get right in a game because segregation prevents players from experiencing every part of the ship unless you break realism or have a special story tied to the gameplay explaining why the player character is an exception. Anyways the gameplay around an open world can give you a more immersive experience than a linear one. It allows you to play the game more freely and experience things at your own pace. I've seen much better stories in some open world games than the alternative. The trails of Cold Steel being one of them. Both styles of games have their merits and it's more a factor of how it was made.
Yeah, this statement struck on me.. I love ALL tales game I played so far, since PS1 Eternia and Destiny with no disappointment whatsoever. If there is a disappointment in the series, probably the fact that the Tales of The World 2 and 3 don't have English versions (maybe even Destiny 2).

People play for other reasons? Fell in love with the series thanks to the inter-party shenanigans of "the good one on the Gamecube!" "Ruin mode," sudden pitfalls, a legendary-tier chef who has a hands-free style, a lethal chef who throws "science at the wall to see what sticks," and the opportunity to avenge oneself on the boss encounters thanks to New Game+ powers! (It was a shame the cast was painfully nerfed in the sequel, but that had its own charm, especially since the faces could properly emote during cutscenes.)
I also like when they put a neat spin on tropes I've seen a million times. It's familiar enough to know I'm going to have fun but refreshing enough that I can find something new in each title.
These characters were fantastic and manage to build relationships over the course of the game and frankly it was way better character development and story telling than most things I've played this year so I'll take the anime games if they're actually good stories

Completely agree this is my fav tales game. had alot of fun with it and one of the few games i felt the need to pick up all the side quests find all the extra bosses.

Here some examples: 1) Hardly anyone regards the Tales series constantly going down since Symphonia, after all, Vesperia and Abyss came afterwards, both of them are extremely popular 2) Rinwell never tries to kill Alphen 3) The costume shown for Rinwell is not an anime tie in, it's a crossover from another game that has yet to be released (The Idolm@ster: Starlit Season)
Even out of the “classics” people will argue if Symphonia, Vesperia, or Abyss are the best. There are also some VERY strong and opinionated discussions about the best of Nu Tales (anything post Vesperia). Honestly, it’s one of the few series with consistently great games. Tempest is the only one I straight up disliked.

Also not much of a fan of Hearts, it never really clicked with me. For me, a Tales game stand and falls with it's cast, and Vesperia is my favorite.

The people who wrote this honest trailer aren't obviously Tales fans, every thing they had against TOA is present in pretty much all Tales Of. I was very satisfied with TOA, easily in my top 3.
I think this is the first time I haven't liked an honest trailer in awhile. Usually you can tell if they did or didn't like/play the game but this one's just blatantly harsh rather than sarcastic.
The two things I agree with are the over saturated combat effects that will leave you blinded to the fact the boss just knocked you out and you don't realize it happened until after the fact, and the overly done skits. Killed immersion in the story when they start acting silly or you get 3 back to back skits about the same thing but with different characters. I started skipping the lines halfway through the game when that would happen. Otherwise this was the first Tales game I've completed, and that says a lot about how good it was otherwise.
Symphonia was also "water in the desert" to JRPG fans on the Gamecube, the PlayStation tended to hoard a lot of those titles. Need to get around to finishing Vesperia, it is nice to have that through Steam.
I heard that "Arise" has become one of the best selling Tales games. I guess the combination of a "gritty wartime" setting alongside colorful animu characters (to appeal to different gamers storytelling sensibilities) along with it being somewhat like the newer Final Fantasy games helped it achieve that sales record.
Everything about it was dumbed down to appeal the broadest audience possible, but in exchange you get shallow characters, a predictable plot, and world building that makes no sense. This seems to be a trend with jrpgs of late. While Atelier Ryza wasn't quite as bad, it did the same thing and people ate it up. I can look at any older Tales titles and list off lovable and memorable supporting and side characters that have 3 times the depth of any of Arise' main cast.

This game makes me want to replay Dragon Quest 11 with different weapons. It just has a very comforting warm feeling to it. I'm not sure how it does given the people dying and whatnot, so I think it's the music and art style.

Heeeeey, heeeeeey!!! there is more than Symphonia, Tales of Abyss was fantastic, and it was on the Playstation 2 and 3DS, the game doesn't forgets the human condition thing...most of the time. In my opinion the game has the best main character in an RPG.
Pretty much, yeah. I mean, "Symphonia" is still considered a high tier game inside the franchise, but it's not that likely to see it on the top spot. But what no "Tales of" fan would EVER say, or even any JRPG fan for that matter, is that "Symphonia" is "the only good one" and that "everything that came after it was a disappointment". You have to REALLY be out of touch in order to say that. As a matter of fact, if we expand to "good Tales of games", you can include many more entries as well. I'd add "Graces F", which although it was lacking in the story department, it has one of the best battle systems in the franchise.
Symphonia has a lot of nostalgia behind it too. It was my first, but very tales of after has massively better gameplay. Berseria is currently my favorite for how damn satisfying the combat is. Arise really didn't match up on that point for me

Yeah I agree. I like Symphonia but it's the FFVII of the series. Other games have absolutely reached it's heights and arguably surpassed them, but for some reason people just don't seem to accept that.

I think you definitely undersold the combat. Imo it gets a bit too convoluted when fighting human enemies, but the rest of the time it's a fantastic combat system. You didn't even mention that you can freely attack in the air, which leads to starting combos in the ground, taking enemies to the air with you and continuing combos there. And then you can even extend combos through boost attacks and finishers that carry your momentum in the air.

Just because a game has "all the same old tropes" doesn't mean it's bad. I tend to have my burgers with all the "same old ingredients" most of the time because those are the things I like. 😃
The Tales characters’ tropes only seem that way if you try and boil down a character’s personality to one sentence. Tales has faaaaaaaar better character development than most RPGs. They feel real and fleshed out.
If we start to abandon "all the same old tropes" then I can't imagine how we can even tell a story. Remember that The Hero's Journey, its inversion, subversion AND aversion are all old tropes - as old as humanity learned to tell stories.

i'd rather take the tales series tropes over the actually generic and by the book games of recent times(seriously could dial it back with the anime digs as honestly it's like complaining about mario jumping and still better narrative & characters than most AAA games.) and final fantasy honestly is more formulaic with it's characters.
I love Jrpgs but hate anime. Here lately the things I hate about anime are starting to annoy me about Jrpgs. Waaaaaaaay too much emotes and weird noises during conversations. Why do they do that? It's extremely off putting. I want to pull the shades and turn my TV down just in case I have a friend stop over.
DLC is entirely superfluous, get plenty of everything as long as you’re playing the game. There’s some good moves in the DLC, but none necessary to enjoy the experience.
I agree 100% I have no idea where people are getting the idea that there’s a grind in this game. I think they’re not actually playing it and just seeing the DLC and assuming that. It’s the only explanation that makes sense.
It's pretty obvious that Tales of Arise was supposed to be another prequel and Alphen was originally intended to be Siegfried, hence the blazing sword. Halfway through production they must have decided scrap the plot and go with this since people are reluctant to play a game connected to other titles and they haven't played those first.
The anti vape commercials are strong...big tobacco is really pushing hard against it...word to the wise..just get vape liquid from well known dealers, not in gas stations.

Just beat this game. Never played Tales games before, but this one hooked me despite its overall mediocrity. Something extremely warm about this game that made me happy whenever I played it.
This game was so anime that midway into the game, it no joke says "Now play season 2" complete with a new opening that's super emotional but not necessarily as punchy as season 1's opening. And in true anime fashion, the second season wasn't as great. It wrapped up the story, but it also dropped the ball in a fundamental way too.
While no Tales game has ever been amazing, some of the earlier titles at least had multi-dimensional characters that were fun to hang out with for the course of the game. Arise drops all of that in order to stuff in every terrible shounen trope possible. Most characters center around one big life event and will spend every conversation referring back to it for the rest of the game. Rinwell has some growth, but it's mostly in side-stories. Her main storyline is just "you don't know anything about her motivations" -> "She reveals something Bad happened and she's mad" -> "She learns to be chill about it." Since you don't know anything about what she's thinking, you can't really follow along--it just gets dumped on you all at once and then it's over. In side stories, she at least slowly learns not to judge people based on their race. No one else has anything going on worth paying attention to, imo. Berseria was one of my favorite entries, but Arise has me reluctant to pick up the next installment.

But what no "Tales of" fan would EVER say, or even any JRPG fan for that matter, is that "Symphonia" is "the only good one" and that "everything that came after it was a disappointment". You have to REALLY be out of touch in order to say that.
As a matter of fact, if we expand to "good Tales of games", you can include many more entries as well. I'd add "Graces F", which although it was lacking in the story department, it has one of the best battle systems in the franchise.
Symphonia has a lot of nostalgia behind it too. It was my first, but very tales of after has massively better gameplay. Berseria is currently my favorite for how damn satisfying the combat is. Arise really didn't match up on that point for me

As a huge tales fan, I can disagree with anything that was said here. Arise has been a lot of fun so far. Though I will say abyss and vesperia are just as great as symphonia.
Yeah I agree. I like Symphonia but it's the FFVII of the series. Other games have absolutely reached it's heights and arguably surpassed them, but for some reason people just don't seem to accept that.
Yep, they clearly don't know much about the series and i actually doubt they played ToA instead of watching a let's play somewhere since their description of the gameplay makes no sense.

I think you definitely undersold the combat. Imo it gets a bit too convoluted when fighting human enemies, but the rest of the time it's a fantastic combat system.
You didn't even mention that you can freely attack in the air, which leads to starting combos in the ground, taking enemies to the air with you and continuing combos there. And then you can even extend combos through boost attacks and finishers that carry your momentum in the air.

Just because a game has "all the same old tropes" doesn't mean it's bad. I tend to have my burgers with all the "same old ingredients" most of the time because those are the things I like. 😃
The Tales characters’ tropes only seem that way if you try and boil down a character’s personality to one sentence. Tales has faaaaaaaar better character development than most RPGs. They feel real and fleshed out.
If we start to abandon "all the same old tropes" then I can't imagine how we can even tell a story. Remember that The Hero's Journey, its inversion, subversion AND aversion are all old tropes - as old as humanity learned to tell stories.

i'd rather take the tales series tropes over the actually generic and by the book games of recent times(seriously could dial it back with the anime digs as honestly it's like complaining about mario jumping and still better narrative & characters than most AAA games.) and final fantasy honestly is more formulaic with it's characters.
I love Jrpgs but hate anime. Here lately the things I hate about anime are starting to annoy me about Jrpgs. Waaaaaaaay too much emotes and weird noises during conversations. Why do they do that? It's extremely off putting. I want to pull the shades and turn my TV down just in case I have a friend stop over.

DLC is entirely superfluous, get plenty of everything as long as you’re playing the game. There’s some good moves in the DLC, but none necessary to enjoy the experience.
I agree 100% I have no idea where people are getting the idea that there’s a grind in this game.
I think they’re not actually playing it and just seeing the DLC and assuming that. It’s the only explanation that makes sense.

It's pretty obvious that Tales of Arise was supposed to be another prequel and Alphen was originally intended to be Siegfried, hence the blazing sword. Halfway through production they must have decided scrap the plot and go with this since people are reluctant to play a game connected to other titles and they haven't played those first.

Just beat this game. Never played Tales games before, but this one hooked me despite its overall mediocrity. Something extremely warm about this game that made me happy whenever I played it.

This game was so anime that midway into the game, it no joke says "Now play season 2" complete with a new opening that's super emotional but not necessarily as punchy as season 1's opening.
And in true anime fashion, the second season wasn't as great. It wrapped up the story, but it also dropped the ball in a fundamental way too.

While no Tales game has ever been amazing, some of the earlier titles at least had multi-dimensional characters that were fun to hang out with for the course of the game. Arise drops all of that in order to stuff in every terrible shounen trope possible. Most characters center around one big life event and will spend every conversation referring back to it for the rest of the game. Rinwell has some growth, but it's mostly in side-stories. Her main storyline is just "you don't know anything about her motivations" -> "She reveals something Bad happened and she's mad" -> "She learns to be chill about it." Since you don't know anything about what she's thinking, you can't really follow along--it just gets dumped on you all at once and then it's over. In side stories, she at least slowly learns not to judge people based on their race. No one else has anything going on worth paying attention to, imo.
Berseria was one of my favorite entries, but Arise has me reluctant to pick up the next installment.
