    Goodwood Hillclimb Roadtest: Porsche 911 Turbo S vs Jaguar F-Type R Coupe EB
    On a superficial level, things look set for a pretty fair fight. A pair of svelte, highly desirable premium sports coupes, each boasting roughly 550 horsepower, and each costing the thick end of a terraced street in Rotherham.
    You needn't scratch too far beneath the surface to find significant differences, of course. One has its engine where the golf clubs are supposed to go, four-wheel-drive and twin turbos. The other is a rear-wheel-driver, with a blown V8 and two fewer seats.
    So how to sort this one out then?
    Back-to-back on the Goodwood Hillclimb of course, with our very own 'King of the Hill' Anthony Reid on driving duties!
    We'll say no more, and let the video do the talking...

    Agree with this review based on my experience with my V8S. HOWEVER, when taking my Jag to track days, Sebring, Homestead, Daytona etc, you need to be a racecar driver to squeeze the best out of the Jag, which I am not. Oversteer, on corner entry, in the corner, corner exit. A lot of fun but a handful compared with my BMW.
    But the brutish nature an sound of the Jag trumps all. I find myself laughing out loud when driving the Jag......priceless.

    Bring them both to Pikes Peak in the USA.....THAT'S a proper Hill Challenge. The track measures 12.42 miles (19.99 km) over 156 turns, climbing 4,720 ft (1,440 m) from the start at Mile 7 on Pikes Peak Highway, to the finish at 14,110 ft (4,300 m), on grades averaging 7.2%.[1] It used to consist of both gravel and paved sections, however as of August 2011, the highway is fully paved and as a result all subsequent running's will be on tarmac from start to finish. Bring the Petrol Boys.....LETS RACE! (Jag Owner (XKR) here)

Hours later wrecked my gazelle chopper on take off. Geico though sent another pilot (naked blond lizard), then did it all over since those 3 fine ladies were tied to a tree in the back, covered in the magic powder ,each with their borrle of Louie 13th. Jaguar rear wheel drive against Porsche all wheel drive? Put it against a 911 with rear wheel drive and I think the outcome will be different. Regardless, the Jag is more fun to drive for $50 grand less. The choice is clear pay more for a car that looks like some kind of bug or own a beautiful car that is more fun to drive for a lot less money. I bought the R Coupe!! I have to enjoy walking up to the car as much as driving it. God it's a wonderful car to drive.

    This was silly. Porsche 911 Turbo S will stomp on nearly any production car at Goodwood. It will do so easily, over and over again and it will not break, overheat or fade. You will need a McLaren or Ferrari to even get close to the speed of the Porsche 911 Turbo S.

    This sort of test is missing the point of the F-Type. Even in R spec, the F-Type is supposed to be a modern day interpretation of the E-Type of the '60s (which drew its inspiration from the D-Type sportscar racecar), and taking that in mind, even Jaguar will tell you the F-Type was designed to be a powerful grand touring car. A powerful long distance cruiser that was never specifically meant to be a track-day car. Pitting it against a Porsche 911 Turbo S is totally missing the point. Even with both cars having similar power and a similar weight, the 911 Turbo is and has always been built to be an out and out track-day machine. Looks-wise, I think few can argue the F-Type has the 911 beat, which should be the case because again, the F-Type is a modern interpretation of one of the most beautiful cars ever created, the E-Type. So in my ever humble opinion, a test like this is missing the "in your face" fact that the F-Type was designed and built to be a beautiful, powerful, and comfortable grand touring car, not a track-focused beast. So declaring the 911 Turbo the winner in this test because of its performance is a moot point. One who gets it would be like, "ok, the 911 Turbo is faster. But if I'm in the market for a gorgeous, powerful GT, I really can't go wrong with an F-Type."

    • @twomstone_17
      @twomstone_17 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Umm, the turbo is a GT car... not built to be a track weapon. The gt3 is the track version of the 911.

    • @sandrarios2496
      @sandrarios2496 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Connor Twomey Yeah but I'm not talking about professional drivers. I'm talking about the average person who does the occasional track day. In that way it's a track day machine. Of course the GT3 is the more track focused car, but a turbo is also something someone can use as a track day weapon, as well as a grand touring car. But if people just wanted a nice grand touring car alone, a Carrera S is all they need if they want a 911.

    • @twomstone_17
      @twomstone_17 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sandra Rios by that logic the f - type R is more of a track focused car, the v6 would be the GT car. This f-type has beefed up springs and dampers, a loud supercharged v-8, 20" wheels, and doesn't even have rear seats. I wouldn't consider that a dedicated GT car more than the 911 turbo is.

    • @sandrarios2496
      @sandrarios2496 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Connor Twomey However you wanna look at it. I am so tired of having petty little arguments on here.
      Whatever car you are lucky enough to have, use it as you wish. No categorization necessary.
      But I still the the F-Type, in all it's carnations, is more of a GT that one can have in greater and greater performance flavors. The 911 is form follows function. The F-Type is a beautiful car that can be had with high performance.

    I understand that the Porsche 911 Turbo S is a faster car in a straight line, handles better, and has more prestige. I won't deny these things. But, being a designer and someone who loves emotion and theater, I would take the F Type R any day of the week, even if the Jag cost more (luckily its a lot less). Now, I just gotta work on affording one :)

      More like an Overrated car brand and people always over hyping when the brand makes something new and it's just a never ending saga.Mean while you got Jag that came a long way from being only a luxury car that only appeals to old people to reverting back to their original bad azz sports cars that are faster and better than any sports car that also come with the looks of almost being an affordable exotic car.For it not being overrated and over hyped like other car brands and for people that don't know much about cars to recognize the prestige of Jaguar,it's hard for them to grasp the concept of what Jaguar brand have achieved when they started back making foreign muscle cars

    I seem to be in the minority of people that find the Porsche to be utterly boring in appearance, maybe it's because I see too many of them on the road; they're certainly not going to stand out anywhere around here. Yes it's a great car, yes it has better performance on paper and on the track, but that's not what should be the deciding factor in buying a car unless you're a total tool. The Jag is beautiful and arouses so many more emotions for me behind the wheel than in a 911, and I couldn't quite give a damn what its lap times are in comparison to any other car on the road. Whatever people may believe the Jag was not designed to be a 911 killer, nor necessarily to compete with any specific model, it was designed to be the next big thing for a company in great need of a product with the soul and beauty to capture a driver's heart. At the end of the day I suppose it's to each his own, and I certainly won't regret having ordered the F-Type.

    • @twomstone_17
      @twomstone_17 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      F type is a fantastic car, but for a lot of people the more subtle styling and the rich history behind the 911, not to mention the great sightlines and everyday (all season too) drivability make it a great car. Also the fact that it will blow the doors off most cars I can see why so many people like them :)

      You're looking at the Carrera then ($84,300 350hp 0-60 4.6s).
      I'm thinking the V6S F-Type might be slightly faster but a V8 F-Type or the 550HP coupe would both easily hand the Carrera its own ass.
      The thing with Porsche is you get practically nothing that you would get as stock from other brands cars at that price. if you just buy the base car you can easily spend another $10-20k to option it out to get the car to a reasonable level. For example, full leather/sports seats +$2k-$8k, a decent stereo +$2-5k,metallic paint +$1k, phone integration +$300, xenon headlights +$1500, etc etc. I'm not even sure any dealer in the US could even get you a stock Carrera with literally no options.

    I have always wanted a f type, but just got a 2019 f Pace SVR, same amazing engine and epic sound, only 0.1 seconds slower than the f type to 60. The latest model is only 3.8 seconds to 60. An SUV with sports car performance and pretty good handling for a 2 ton SUV. Put it in comfort road and while it's not as smooth as my old XJ my wife says it's very comfortable an a nice ride. She is happy and so am I. When she is in the car, it's 26 mpg. When I am on my own, it's 12 mpg and I can feel my heart beating. A compromise car that works for both of us. ***** And you arrived at this conclusion how? I have had two 5.0l XKR jags over last five years without any trouble whatsoever. My neighbours M6 spent more time in the garage than on the road and a work colleagues Ferrari 458 went up in flames within three weeks of delivery. You put jags and land rovers as 1 and 2 worst depreciating luxury vehicles. If I had purchased an Aston DBS for £150k two years ago I would be lucky to get £100k now. Reason I know that cos my mate is 'Suffering' so to speak. Thats twice the depreciation I suffered on both XKR's put together. Enough said.

    The verdict of any British show always goes to the British car. And I really mean it. Look at any comparison of any car vs a british car, if it is a British show every single time they talk smack of the other cars and just the best of their cars...

    A Jag R will drive a 911 Turbo S out of rear view in 10 secs. Torque moves the car. High redline = no torque. The Jag's massive HP is severly under-tired with P-Zeros. R888Rs and it is a less than 3 sec 0-60..

  • @98mercers

    If you were on a track and cared about those milliseconds, then yes, the 911 is the one to choose. But what's the point of spending over £142,000 on a car that looks exactly the same as a Boxster (which is £38,000) when only the Porsche fanboys can tell the difference? At that price you're starting to get into Lamborghini Gallardo territory.
    The Jag is far better looking, sounds incredible, more fun to drive AND IS £57,000 CHEAPER!
    You can get an F-Type R AND a Cayman GTS for the price of one 911 Turbo S.

    and i just don't get it, I think i must be the only one out there that thinks this way, I have driven on and off the track
    aston martins, ferraris, GT-R's 911 gt2 and so yes there a good car well most off them, but never see what most/all

    Is there a neutral comparison of these two? I mean, I love the jag and I love the Porsche, but is there a comparison that's not orchestrated by British people? These guys did pretty well, but I still can't help feeling that the entire thing was a little biased towards the jag from the beginning...

    • @mollyoko
      @mollyoko 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am Irish and hence have no allegiance to the English nor its cousins the Germans. I test drove both these cars and the F-Type convertible and Carrera convertible. I chose the Jaguar convertible (with all options) despite nearly going for the Coupe-R, mainly because I live in California where it is warm and sunny and I often have a fit blonde in the passenger. If I lived at home I'd take the Coupe-R all day ;) The Porsche was nice to drive but the F-type is waaaaaaaaay more fun and far better looking. For the record I also tested Aston Martin Vantage V8 and Nissan GTR ;)

      It is a little ridiculous to suggest that the UK is the least biased nation when it comes to cars with shows like Top Gear and /Drive with Calvin Harris, but then again, I guess you could make the case that everyone is biased.
      I am not going to pretend like I know the tendencies of the foreign car markets of Japan, Germany, France, and Italy, but I buy and sell cars in the USA and I can tell you that the only domestic cars that Americans are loyal to are muscle cars and pickups. Muscle cars are a very small percentage of overall car sales in the USA and American pickups basically drive the Automotive Industry, but, as far as every other type of vehicle, foreign counterparts of American sedans, minivans, sports cars, and SUVs/crossovers dominate the market.
      As far as the Jag goes: I understand why people get all wryled up about the car. The F-type is a very passionate car and evokes a very passionate following. I think it is an amazing car. I just think that people are so hyped-up about it that they might gloss over the negatives or over glorify it.
      I almost feel like if someone says something bad about it they will be publicly flogged for their heresy.

    • @mollyoko
      @mollyoko 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Whats negative about it? It has slightly less road feel and top speed than a 911 Turbo which its constantly compared too but its $30-50k cheaper depending on model/extras. Its loud and beautiful.
      Also, Calvin Harris is a sell-out EDM artist so I couldn't give two fucks what he thinks about cars ;)

    I honestly wouldn't want a raucous sports car with "big" sound. I live in Oz and the cops pull you over just for blipping your throttle at the lights. I'd rather a turbo 911 or a GTR, or even a new gen M5. Understated, and basically soundproof but without the cop bait or wanker factor of louder, showier cars. I don't need to be noticed.

    If it were my money I'd buy the Jaguar F-Type R. Hands down. Price...it starts off at more then $90k LESS than the Turbo S. That's a bit of change. :) Then there's the fun factor driving on the city streets and country roads. The ROAR of the engine/pipes. Like no other...in a VERY good way. Add a very well designed body shell (sexy, elegant and aggressive....at the same time). Makes the Turbo S seem boring...as immensely well engineered as it is. In the end it's about the "driving experience" and here the F-Type R wins. No question.
    German cars never been about sex appeal. Just "function" and supreme engineering. They get the job done. But without character.

    The Porsche 911 Turbo is not designed for the track, it's for the road, the Turbo S is for the fit who has a shit load of cash and wants an everyday usable shoppers car that is blistering fast, rides smooth and is comfortable for everyday use, and is reliable as hell. If you want a car that makes a bit more noise from Porsche with their flat six, then you need to buy a GT3 variant, two different animals.
    What is it with these reviewers, are they just reviewing so to put their mugs on TH-cam.
