Thank you for giving Mission Viejo and James Logan a run for their money. Definitely one of the best bands in the 5A division. Very clean indoor line as well!!
I wish there was this much unity and motivation in my schools drumline and frankly my schools band overall. Everyone in my band just whines about having rehearsals and starts drama. No one practices either
I marched in a line like this back in high school. Taught me hard work and discipline. The highlight of my time was playing along side UF drumline and talking about the Big 8 the whole time lol
You think what they do is walking? It's called marching, there is certain technique to it. Also what they play is not wack shit either, it is highly technical music that they pay people to write. Some of the most highly regarded techs (if you even know what the is) work on that line. They are more uniform, disciplined, and dedicated than you can imagine.
This is great. I know our high school wont be this good by my senior year. It's only our second year in our high school. We are lucky just to have a total of almost 30 members. But I honestly don't care about the band. My section is drums, and thats what I want to focus on the most. We are the leaders of the band. And we need to be serious about this stuff. I hate it cuz everyone is always goofy. But I would never trade it for anything. Drumline all the way!!! Ill post a speech we do.
if our high school cared half as much as this band we would be awesome our band is abot 75 members and doesnt have colorgaurd or front ensemble we have the peoplke not the dedication good video!!!1
you know i'm a trumpet player that taught himself how to play snare and can even crank through a bit the Bluecoat audtion packet and then i see this and feel like im trash like they are beyond amazing its like drumcore breeding ground
Brookwood highschool Atl Georgia, march a band of 300, 10 snares 7 bases 5 quads (one injured rn) 8 cymbals, will all be clean in a few weeks it's one helluva experience
Dumb question: are the clamps that they're using on their snares for the extra percussion a yamaha brand, or is it just a run-of-the-mill clamp i would use on a drumset?
I swear, Cali bands and Texas bands have large amount numbers of band students. I'm from GA and we have superior bands here too but mostly all bands here in GA are around 120+ to 200+ people in the band while Cali and Texas bands have like 200+ to 300+ people.
@TehAwsomekid that's the same way my school is but we starting to go hard in indoor so that's good try to suggest that at your school if you don't already have it
how come they can't tape the struggle of a suburb high school with a low band budget, and see how different AHS is compared to TJHS (Dallas,TX) our d-line isn't that big but we still get it down. these guys have it easy compared to us.
Well, struggling bands with a low high school budget is usually because of the lack of band members (which could also mean the lack of being a successful band). They tape Ayala because they're a fantastic drumline. Sure, maybe TJHS might be pretty good, but Ayala gained High Percussion at BoA, which isn't an easy feat.
My highschool band get all superior in competitions except for state but that was our first state comp. not to mention we got band of the week 2 weeks in a row and our uniforms are 15 years old and everytime we get off the field the other band members come to us giving us peices of our uniform saying "here you dropped this" its really pathetic that the board buys football team new uniforms pads etc just about every year and our tuba is literally held together with rubber bands and tape and our band has 75+ members even though like 26 is auxilary so my sturggling band isnt because of high school budgetbecause the highschool isnt so bad really its actually quite nice but its the town not really caring and the board not investing there time nor money in us if i must say so myself also my drums (tenor drums AKA quads) that i play for marching 2nd drum is cracked and they all 5 are tilted diferent directions so there hard to play and our drum carriers are falling apart we usually tape them before practice or games and last time i took my carrier off i had cuts from were it broke last year rubbed/cut my shoulder so i wish our school/band/drumline was like the one in this video OH also our practice field is the school parking lot but theres ALOT more but thats all im typing want to know more or want to help us out reply to this
Juvante' Hayes now that Ike Jackson, their tech has his own sticks with innovative Percussion, they use the FS-IJ Ike Jackson Signature Marching Snare Sticks
Can someone explain to me what makes a high school drumline this good? I thought mine was good until I saw this video. Is it the quality of the techs, or what?
I'll guess. Probably more than just one factor. A knowledgeable percussion staff is probably the biggest part of it. Along with a knowledgeable staff, they probably give a lot of attention to their bass line: arguably the most important part to a good drumline. It doesn't hurt to have nice weather (65 degree +) all year round. Equally as important as staff, the kids are intrinsically motivated to do their best. Listen to how they talk. They speak about the drumline as if it were a job. They are very professional. Don't sell yourself short Katy Bovey. Your drumline might have all the elements that they have at Ayala. The last element I'd like to add is time. it takes time to develop skills. Have fun marching this upcoming season. Also, some say "practice makes perfect," but an old music teacher around my way use to say "perfect practice makes permanent." Good luck to you and your drumline.
They get a beach trip after band camp? That's cool. Sometimes we pretend we're at the beach by pouring cold water on our heads and scrubbing our battle wounds with dirt. Sometimes brass brings beach balls to make it more interesting.. :((
6:20 the anthem of all instructors when it comes to time and keeping the ensemble together, every day it's DON'T LISTEN TO THE PIT WHAT THEY PLAY IS ALREADY DONE WHICH WILL MAKE YOU OFF!! Honestly I understand the frustration of instructing especially on that topic, how hard is it to just watch the drum major and not listen to the pit?
Yeah, I guess I can see where you were coming from. From your previous comments it sounded like you were bashing whoever said anything about Ayala. I understand your point now its just it was harder to tell before hand. Sorry about any hard feelings
I'm laughing at the comments of how this school has a lot if asians. I played here from 97-2000. Greatest years of my life. We were a lil bit more mixed lol. Mexicans asians blacks lol
Traditional is harder than matched... but you're right that it doesn't necessarily show how good or bad you are. I have taught percussion for 3 years now and marched DCI and every single person I have taught takes about twice as long to become proficient at Traditional grip when compared to matched. I'm not saying matched is easy, just that it's easier than traditional grip.
Hey my high school plays matched too. It's not because of skill it's because my schools percussion teacher learned match when he was in middle school so that's just how he teaches
Thank you for giving Mission Viejo and James Logan a run for their money. Definitely one of the best bands in the 5A division. Very clean indoor line as well!!

Ayala high school has many many asians lol
Oh yes I go here and they do
asain powers activate
Arcadia too
True
“Sometimes his ways of doing it are a little bit harsh.... *but it always turns out well at the end*”
"always"
That didn’t age too well lol
this is such a sick drumline wow they are really good
its not just the talent level about this high school that makes them good its also the work ethic they have.
That guy is so damn down to earth. You go dude.
Wow!!! What a wonderful documentary! Way to go guys!
Hey does anyone have the score for that break in the beginning of the video?
This is great. I know our high school wont be this good by my senior year. It's only our second year in our high school. We are lucky just to have a total of almost 30 members. But I honestly don't care about the band. My section is drums, and thats what I want to focus on the most. We are the leaders of the band. And we need to be serious about this stuff. I hate it cuz everyone is always goofy. But I would never trade it for anything. Drumline all the way!!! Ill post a speech we do.
This documentary was very well made. Good job.
2:55 - "Max this $#@% out!"
Words spoken in EVERY drumline at least once during EVERY season.
if our high school cared half as much as this band we would be awesome our band is abot 75 members and doesnt have colorgaurd or front ensemble we have the peoplke not the dedication good video!!!1
Alright guys. We are the battery, and without the battery, the band has no juice. 123 WE ARE THE JUICE!!!!!!
Well your winds sound like a turd... but the drumline is kicking ass!
Chino Hills is composed of roughly 1/3 Asians demographically, that is why. I guess most of the 1/3 pick Marching Band.
Good Choice!
BEACH TRIP! That's alway a fun time! Made a lot of great friends during my time at AHS!
their drum line out does their band by a fucking long shot. they are DCI quality.
brody bergstrom their drum line is literally world class😂 the won the 2016 wgi championship
SniperAss4ssin oh cool. I don't follow WGI😂
they've won the wgi championship twice (2016 + 2010) and several of their members do go on to march the top groups in DCI :)
Caleb You’re stupid.
you know i'm a trumpet player that taught himself how to play snare and can even crank through a bit the Bluecoat audtion packet and then i see this and feel like im trash like they are beyond amazing its like drumcore breeding ground
Brookwood highschool Atl Georgia, march a band of 300, 10 snares 7 bases 5 quads (one injured rn) 8 cymbals, will all be clean in a few weeks it's one helluva experience
There is no way in hell a high school drumline with ten snares will be remotely clean. It isn't possible.
kutegreek I march Grayson snareline. How in the world do you guys have 7 basses?
Lmao 7 basses?
Iv'e seen them at competitions and you'd be surprised.
BOA band?
F*ck. They're that clean during camp. My school's line can't come anything close to this after two months. Great job Ayala!
No Matt Le didn't march snare for Academy 2012. He is a student at UCLA and was in their marching band.
Dumb question: are the clamps that they're using on their snares for the extra percussion a yamaha brand, or is it just a run-of-the-mill clamp i would use on a drumset?
what is the instrument that the snares have that looks like a pairs of spurs? They play it at 9:13.
I swear, Cali bands and Texas bands have large amount numbers of band students. I'm from GA and we have superior bands here too but mostly all bands here in GA are around 120+ to 200+ people in the band while Cali and Texas bands have like 200+ to 300+ people.
You guys are so lucky you get to practice without shirts on and/or wearing sports bras
are they using evans black hybrid snare heads?
no the crown guy was from umass his name is andy kim
Was this kid in Crown '12? There was a snare that looked a lot like him.
Hey dude, just curious, did you guys have to do any sort of Basics such as faces and dresses in band camp?
Hey does anybody know where I can get that like brown tape thats at the bottom of their white sticks?
"I was counting"
"you were counting? What is counting?"
What sticks do the snares use?
Bob Jones in Madison?
Lol that quad hacking during the interview
Didn't Matt march snare for the Academy 2012?
@TehAwsomekid that's the same way my school is but we starting to go hard in indoor so that's good try to suggest that at your school if you don't already have it
Was some of Eric Whitacres Equus in this show?
what the hell is the spikey ball at the back of the snare drums
Ike Jackson is also a DCI drum instructor. That's how. Haha.
Im doing something like this...What camera was used in this or what camera is recommended?
Burty this was back in ‘09 so it was probably a tv camera or a dlsr but you could use a dlsr
A lot of good high school lines have had instructors that marched DCI.
And How many of them or doing Drum Corps now? I thought so
So you guys have a badass drumline and you get to go to the beach in your free time....
Whats that on your drum???
very good drumline, im in the amador valley high school drumline.
I really wish our drumline was like theirs
What is the thing he's shaking at 9:13 ?
what is this? dci??
really awesome idea and exicution
did there snare captain ever march dci

...How does a high school reach this level?? How does it get so many young adults who care?
Ah cmon Ayala you deserve better then Yamaha
the things I would do to be in a high school line like this..
No disrespect but this drummline will blow us out the water....Wish i was there :/
What kind of sticks do they use?
Juvante' Hayes now that Ike Jackson, their tech has his own sticks with innovative Percussion, they use the FS-IJ Ike Jackson Signature Marching Snare Sticks
how is this highschool?????? They are amazing
Hey, is your drumline feared by others?
Can someone explain to me what makes a high school drumline this good? I thought mine was good until I saw this video. Is it the quality of the techs, or what?
practice, friend
They probably have a middle school drumline so the kids are more experienced when they join.
I'll guess. Probably more than just one factor. A knowledgeable percussion staff is probably the biggest part of it. Along with a knowledgeable staff, they probably give a lot of attention to their bass line: arguably the most important part to a good drumline. Yes, Ayala has a middle school that's basically like a feeder school for both Drumline and band
Have a bunch of asians
They have a pretty easy book but holy shit it was pretty piss clean
I can see a 2017 bluedevils age out in this drumline
pretty impressive, wish I went to Ayala. Half of my line doesn't have the effort to be a good line. -.-
i wish my school had a drumline
Why would you put country music over the drumline playing at 7:30
david plotnik That was the song Ike Jackson was talking about
They get a beach trip after band camp? That's cool. Sometimes we pretend we're at the beach by pouring cold water on our heads and scrubbing our battle wounds with dirt. Sometimes brass brings beach balls to make it more interesting.. :((
Nice job on Equus.
I wonder how the ONE white guy on the snareline feels about his....... DRUMRINE!!!!!!
my high school doesn't let us go shirtless during band camp. sad quad line :(
Yeah, I guess I can see where you were coming from. From your previous comments it sounded like you were bashing whoever said anything about Ayala. I understand your point now its just it was harder to tell before hand. Sorry about any hard feelings
1 moe thing, Cali rocks! my hometown and los angeles
man, these kids got it good...
im getting pumped for camp tomorrow (:
best high school snare line I've ever seen.
saxophones. y u play in drumline documentary?
My schools line in a nut shell._.
it's true. As great as my schools line is, we don't have enough discipline.
Crazy good for a high school
you should check out astoria high school were definitely not as good but were strive for excellence
LOL I found drumline just like Matt Lane (is that his name?) :)
EQQQUUUUUUUSSS! played it in my wind ensemble
Not true, I was the drumline mom for 3 years with Ayala. They all do their loading/unloading with parents supervising them.
I'm laughing at the comments of how this school has a lot if asians. I played here from 97-2000. Greatest years of my life. We were a lil bit more mixed lol. Mexicans asians blacks lol
That's nathan medina at 7:37
My highschool doesn't even use traditional grip :c
Hey Dartmouth Indoor doesn't use traditional! It's not the way you hold the stick that shows how good you are.
Traditional is harder than matched... but you're right that it doesn't necessarily show how good or bad you are. I have taught percussion for 3 years now and marched DCI and every single person I have taught takes about twice as long to become proficient at Traditional grip when compared to matched. Hey my high school plays matched too. It's not because of skill it's because my schools percussion teacher learned match when he was in middle school so that's just how he teaches
haha no joke. listen to the phrasing. you will find an 8th note tap roll at the beginning of almost everyone.
look up the movie
From the 50 Yard Line
thats my highschool
They must be really good at anticipation duts.
@ 0:32 you look like Koji Mori (aka Spartacus) from Phantom 2008
They are called crashers
hey i never knew ryan higa marched snare
