      He did still categorize his wife as a thing, though. If someone wanted to take the opportunity to be offended, they would still have something to be offended about. I'm not sure there's a way to reword his original comment to completely sanitize it, though.

      @@deusexaethera
      "Three things that I will always keep solely to myself", if something like that would set off anyone - they're simply looking for something to be offended/picky about.
      If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
      The "thing" thing - that's just a language limitation. In colloquial language "thing" is often used to many things besides OBJECTS - to concepts, abstract ideas, titles - basically everything. Word "wife" could be seen here as a concept/title, not a particular person.
      He didn't call her an OBJECT.
      Anyway. As I said above - nitpicking. Hammer. Everything is a nail to some people.
      Edit: if you REALLY want to "de-offensive-ize" the statement even more, you COULD use "matters" instead of "things", but that would likely sound weird, since most things he mentioned were tools.
      People just should stop being offended by BS matters, for their own sanity.

      @@deusexaethera It still jumped off the page as weird to me but I like that he both realized how bad it sounded and rephrased it in a more respectful way (I'm in no way religious but there's a popular religious brand in this part of the world that charges men with protecting their wives -- and yeah depending on your interpretation it's a little less honorable than it could be). Still, clarification was immediate.
      I also like that he realized the ribbing he'd get if his wife heard it without the clarification.
      Could've just said "don't touch my saws, only thing I'd hurt you over more is my wife" in my local parlance. Similar sensibility with very different wording.

  • @magnusdanielsson2749

    in sweden it used to be a somewhat practise to making "fat wood"-logs for the bottom log in houses. but the practise is to no take off the bark all around, you leave a "life line" so it can live on an fill up with protective "juice". there is also one method where you cut off the top. or cut vertical strips(leaving one strip), this is supposedly the best method.
    there are examples of public houses commissioning fat wod logs several decades in advance. pretty cool ( i happen to be a fan of swedish log houses btw B-) )

    I learned about this as a child.
    I was playing in the garden with a newly acquired pen knife which I was very proud of, naturally. I didn't really have a task so I was just cutting leaves and bringing twigs to a point when I thought I'll just mark this bark on a small tree. You see it in films and on old healed over trees so I thought it would be fine.
    I cut a ring all the way around a couple of times just to do it and my dad arrived up. He said with a slightly disappointed tone "why did you do that?" to which I replied "DId what, what do you mean?".
    He, realising I had no knowledge of the vital biology I had just interrupted, explained that I had just killed the tree.
    I felt a bit sceptical at first as it looked fine but I believed him like any child would. Sure enough the small tree died later on. I felt very ashamed of my ignorance and wasteful behaviour but it thought me a lesson about unintended consequences of small personal actions as it pertains to nature and natural resources.

    • @xcvsdxvsx
      @xcvsdxvsx 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Wise Beard Man Yea it wasnt meant to be taken too literally. It was just a bit of fun.
      However some thing in your comment was interesting and worth exploring i think. You say the right to not be owned is a fundamental human right. I would like to argue that, far to the contrary, the right *to be owned* is infact a fundamental human right. Now i know that sounds crazy but walk through the argument with me and see what you think.
      What is ownership? I think a pretty reasonable way to think about it is as a bundle of rights. Other rights can come with it but there are a few core rights one must possess in order to be said to own a thing. The first is the right to alter or change a thing. The second is to give another the right to alter or change that thing. The third is the right to transfer ownership of that thing to another party. This is sort of the general basics of the concept of ownership.
      Next I would like to posit as an axiom that the single most fundemental human right above all others is the concept of "self ownership". That is people, above all else, own themselves.
      If that definition is reasonable and the axiom posited is true than it logically follows that people are entitled to the right to sell themselves.
      Practically speaking we might contrive a scenario where a person would willingly chose to do this and be thankful for the ability to do so. Imagine a scenario where a mothers child is ill with a condition that would require vast resources to cure. Perhaps it is extremely rare and the cure would need to be researched and developed before it could be administered. Perhaps she might sell herself to some billionaire freakazoid in order to raise the vast sums necessary to research the cure to save her child.
      Just a fun thought expirment. You don't get a (i like to think) intellectually serious and rigorous pro slavery argument every day. ;)

    Hello everyone! I tried out this on three big healthy spruces 2 years ago. I cut down the trees last weekend and I must say that this technique is a time and energy savior. First of all, the needles fell off about a year ago, which made the branches light to handle after the tree was cut and trimmed. Second of all, the logs were lighter and ready to be chopped for firewood. However, I will save the axe work for next year.
    So, I don't know why I haven't heard of this technique before. But it seems that this method is super sneeky for taking down trees for firewood purposes. I will also try out how this girdling works on trees that I will use for logs/lumber.

    I would like to add another reason for girdling.
    Girdled wood tends to last longer. The nutrients are used up, so spores cannot multiply. The tree is less sensitive to sap-stain or mold fungi which will lay the wood to waste.
    Fungi can be prevented with using fungicide at the saw mill. Light mildew can be treated. But why not girdle most trees destined for high quality wood like in construction, furniture, instruments, mouldings, etc?
    Generally, you increase the quality and durability of the investment at a very low cost.

It was time to sharpen anyway. 60 seconds later, my same friend, who happens to have at least twice the hours on a chain saw as me, ran it into the dirt again. My wife was over heard me watching this video and she commented on the beauty of the music you chose to accompany your presentation. I agree it is very nice indeed. I remember some years ago there was this nice little cherry tree not far from our front door on common public property that brought much beauty and joy to the neighborhood. One day I caught this rotten mean kid peeling the bark similarly to the girdling you demonstrated here. I told her that she just killed that tree. She snidely retorted that "No! That's not going to kill it!" But it did and it had to be cut down. Every time I saw her walking by the little stump I'd point at it and say "too bad you had to ruin that poor tree, you must be proud of yourself"

  • @vaulimere

    +Wranglerstar lol, I had that exact thought when you mentioned your wife as one of the top three possessions. Glad you clarified it :D
    I'd be curious to know how much "habitat trees" really help reduce the spread of invasive and destructive insects. It seems as though they don't just hang out in one tree, but spread like a virus everywhere they can reach (like the pine beetles).

    • @goodbodha
      @goodbodha 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jon Stewart (Vaulimere) I am also curious about this. My wild guess is that habitat trees provide more room for birds and the birds as a result cut back beetles by eating them so much. I do think though that the idea that beetles will just hang out in the one tree is questionable. Seems more likely that the abundance of food there would result in a spike in population that would just go after the other trees that much faster.

    • @Ham68229
      @Ham68229 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jon Stewart (Vaulimere) Cody did state 1 fact about this. 1 dedicated tree per 1 acre. If you break that down, that's actually a lot of trees on a small property. I'm unsure as to how much acreage Cody has but, I'm sure, we're only seeing 1 small part of it.
