To be clear, the second trial does not necessarily show the truth. We still don’t know if the world he left behind still exists or if time rewinds. We still don’t exactly know how RBD works. At least I’ve never seen any direct proof either way.
I don’t think it matters that much if what the trial shows is real, at least for Subaru in that moment. If it’s real, Subaru has to face the consequences of his actions. If it isn’t, if it’s something constructed from his memories, then he has to face something hes known all along. In either case, it’ll lead him to the same conclusion.
@@KyleRobes what do you mean? It would make Subaru never want to die if he knew it wouldn’t actually hurt others. One thing is that it’s better him not knowing. Can’t help but be curious though.
I think the reason why the second trial is so traumatic for Subaru is that he desperately wants to believe that no one would care if he suffers. The trial shows Subaru that he's wrong, people do care about him. If the scenarios presented in the trial are real, then it means Subaru never considered how his suffering would affect others, and if they're not real, then it means Subaru always knew that treating himself that way would hurt people and he tried to ignore it. That's why I don't think it matters whether or not what happens in the trial is "real" because the lesson is the same; people love and care about him and don't want him to suffer. You could make the argument that if no one knows that Subaru is hurting then it wouldn't matter how many times Subaru dies, but I think that sort of misses the point. The whole "the ends justify the means" mindset can lead to some pretty terrible places, and I have a feeling that it's going to be addressed in the next half of the season since that's part of Roswaal's whole ideology.

Roswaal is great, too bad he's insane though, but yeah he has a big dream of slaying the dragon behind the waterfall (It was briefly mentioned in season 1 when ram was sitting on his lap). He cannot accomplish it by himself thats why he depends on the prophecy and Subaru. But it makes me think: the dragon sealed Echidna away, so would slaying it mean theres a possibility to revive Echidna and that is Roswaals goal or is there another, actually good motive behind his actions

Youre Re:Zero videos are amazing. I love watching these type of videos and yours are so well made and thought out. Thank you for making them, I really enjoyed watching them
What i love about this arc is that it challenges the readers understanding of Subaru's situation. I remember hearing online people criticizing how RBD could be abused by Subaru just dying everytime something bad happens to change the outcome. But that mentality never takes into account how bad it is for Subaru to go throught and not only that, it affects the type of person he becomes later, like in one of the "If" stories where he does abuse RBD. Spoilers: He takes Echidna's offer and makes his sacrifice his biggest strenght. He becomes extremely powerful, but he doesn't support the people in his life with their problems causing them grave unending pain (Emillia, Beatrice and Garfiel) because he chose the most optimal path, the only person that is happy to be with Subaru is just Roswaal funnily enough. He also becomes violent to Echidna, beating her up, resenting what he becomes because of her.
Loved the video, but there's still one thing bugging me. I understand that he should love himself and help others because that's the best option. However, Return by Death is still Subaru's trump card in situations where everything could be lost. Yes, Subaru knows that he shouldn't abuse Return by Death, but this still doesn't take away the certainty that Subaru and his loved ones *will* die again in the future. There are some consequences that Subaru is willing to put up with, like the deaths of people that he doesn't know, but we know that his absolute limit are the sufferings of his loved ones and just things that have permanent and problems too big for him to ignore. Like you said, Subaru has to accept that he can't be certain about everything, but as long as he has Return by Death, he will try over and over to find the solution he can live with and the happiest everyone can be, even if it's not 100% perfect.
I think that presents it's own brilliant, continuous obstacle for Subaru. After the second trial, he is much more reluctant to resort to return by death as he has seen the potential after effects of carelessly leaving worlds behind. Despite this, he will still want to reach an optimal outcome where everyone close to him is in as good of a position as possible. But that plays once again upon the theme of doubt as it forces Subaru to question whether the potential pain and suffering his death could cause in this world is worth the potential improvements he could provide everyone in the next world. He is forced to weigh up whether the state of the world warrants a redo. That means that the closer together his renewed self care and his care for the situation of others comes, the more agonising the dilemma. It even creates mixed feelings from an audience because, as this self care grows, what sort of unideal situations could it potentially outweigh? Do we really WANT Subaru to learn to love and value himself more if it means that he will begin to allow more and more less-than-acceptable outcomes to become permanent? He has to overcome his doubt every time he moves past an incident, since he will question whether he is OK with allowing this to be the permanent outcome. In other words, after the second trial, Subaru now has to have a mental tug-of-war between his own wellbeing (which he has now been taught to value more) and the wellbeing of others when considering whether to retry. It is a clever yet cruel way of making Return by Death test Subaru more harshly in proportion to how much self worth he gains.
Just discovered your channel, and both of your analysis videos have been on my favourite anime (mob Psycho) and light novel (re zero). You've done a great job, managing to explain something I myself wouldn't be able to put into words. Thank you for this video.
Also something cool is that Echidna's offer is literally exactly the same offer Satan gave to God when deciding what to do on earth, Jesus decided to give everybody agency but it meant that people could make the wrong decisions and have to live with it, but Satan decided he would make it so that everybody always made the right decision - his decisions, yet god chose Jesus' plan.

Most anime watchers hate Subaru's character because they are like him, to a certain extent. I know a lot of people who watch anime because it allows them to insert them selfs into these "cool" anime character and use it as some sort of escapism. But when they see Subaru, they don't see this cool character, they see a hopeless person who no one would like to be and maybe even they se them self's in him. For me that has the opposite effect, i love Subaru so much because I relate to him in some way and he's an extremely well put together character. When I read the Web Novel arc 6, i was blown away. Subaru's character definitely peaks there, but we are still a bit over halfway untill the story is finished and his character still has plenty of room to grow. Natsuki Subaru is my favorite character in fiction

10/10 Whole video was amazing, and also gives of Kaseneru ( Greed IF ) vibes
Great video man! It discussed the intricacies of Subaru's character extremely well
Wow! What an analysis of the story. Good job man

This was a great video, you're seriously underrated!
This was a great video, I really love such videos in which people go in-depth of a character's psyche. Especially if it is about Subaru.
I really hope your channel blows up soon in subs and views. You content is high quality and the subjects your video discuses are intriguing. Keep up the good work man! 👍🏻
Best analysis video about fictional story I've ever seen
Amazing analysis! I was wondering who inspires your style? The intro was very reminiscent to some Vsauce 3 videos, and it just works so well with an anime like re:zero. You are definitely going to blow up on day if you keep putting out bangers like this!
