Re Zero: The show where, not only is a character dying not a spoiler, but it's one of the only shows that can make a scene where characters stand and talk for half an hour actually exciting.
Monogatari series has characters talking for 13 episodes just for it to skip the climax and give us the conclusion. Yet it’s an absolute beauty of an anime
Arc 1: Subaru learns that there's a chance to be a hero Arc 2: Subaru learns what it takes to try and be a hero Arc 3: Subaru learns that he's not a hero....yet Arc: 4 Subaru learns that even heroes need help Arc 5: Subaru learns that he can be a hero to Arc 6: Subaru learns how he is a hero to others
You know, I'll be completely frank with you: I didn't think Re:Zero could keep up its brilliant momentum. I consider that first season to be a masterclass in writing, directing, sound design, fucking everything. I watched every episode 2-3 times when they came out, I thought about it constantly. It deeply affected me. Maybe this is pessimistic, but I'm so used to long running shows disappointing me. I'm so used to falling off because it strays in a direction I don't like. It loses that spark, idk. Parent and Child took that, crumpled it up, and reassured me that Re:Zero didn't stumble its way into my favorites list. It's here to stay.
Just so you know it just gets even better, especially with Arc 6 (Season 4 probably). Like for me personally Arc 6 just blew every other Arc of Re:Zero and made them look bad in comparison. Also, if I'm honest with you the second season (Arc 4) is arguably bad compared to the Web Novel version of Arc 4 which is a TRUE masterpiece. (The Web Novel version not the Light Novel)
i'm never gonna forgive the anime for cutting the part where subaru chugs a jar of mayonnaise to prove he's just as much the mayo weirdo as his parents
@@yukina7647 They would’ve done it too, but the more pertinent content obviously takes precedent and that pertinent content took up the full 30 minutes, lol. Re zero and white fox going nuts
I’m glad to see Geoff still talks about re zero. I love this show. It’s clear the creators wanted to squeeze every second of run time to adapt this arc which is the longest of the series. They could have cut many more important details to save on the workload but they’ve made the episodes 28 minutes instead of 22 and have removed most of the openings and endings. It’s just nice to see a set of creators want to make a good show and I think re zero definitely his that mark and beyond
Yeah, at least the Producer & White Fox went to those extra lengths. It's to show that they cared about covering as much content from the Source Material as possible in the anime. Unlike A-1 Pictures with how they handled the last portion of the Alicization arc of SAO. I've read the Source Material just to see how that ended after the anime stopped in Dec. 2019; just to get it out of the way. As for the anime; A-1 actually *cut-out crucial content* for it's writing and narrative. Resulting in some parts in the anime to be confusing and causing some scenes to be unconvincing (I'm not willing to go into details because it'll make this post *a lot* longer than needed). Seeing that actually made me glad that I've read the Source Material beforehand because I understood what was going on as I watched the anime. Unlike the anime-onlys who were confused in some parts & unconvinced in some scenes. On top of that, A-1 actually *added* "filler content" in one of the episodes that at the end of the day was a "forced-in sideshow" that just felt out of place & overall a complete waste of time. Time that would've better been used for the (cut) content that's important for it's writing & narrative. _(I was _*_piping-hot furious_*_ when I first saw that)._ The last part of SAO Alicization's anime would've been a lot better if A-1 took the same approach as White Fox did with Re:Zero; remove the Opening & Ending videos/songs when it's needed & extending the episode length. But no; it seems that A-1 doesn't care for putting out a proper adaptation for SAO's anime.
"parent and child" truly is a masterpiece of a show as a 4 year shut-in, watching "parent and child", aside from why subaru was one, wasnt watching a show... it was looking into a mirror. everything i saw, i experienced, even the ever supporting parents . and the episode left me emotionally sensitive for 2 weeks, immediately crying upon thinking back on it. I was already working on getting back to my life, but that episode gave me the motivation to wholeheartedly move on, and to work on my relationship with my mother
Yo just finished the video. I know this will probably get lost in the abyss, but I wanted to mention a moment I think deserves analysis and is an amazing part of the anime - the ending part of "I know hell" that gives the episode its name. All throughout the anime, people around Subaru are shown to be better than him, and aren't afraid to point out his flaws. Time and time again people shit on Subaru and he is unable to defend himself except to show that they are right. But in this moment, Garfiel tries to criticise Subaru, and Subaru definitively shuts him down. Garfiel claims that Subaru can't possibly know what suffering is really like, and in a line that wraps up all that Subaru has been through, he tells Garfiel "I know hell". Not only that, but he says that he should be the only one that needs to go through it. It is self sacrificing behaviour that he needs to and will learn from, but the fact remains that this is perhaps the first time Subaru makes his intentions clear, and they are pure and noble. Not only that, but he does it with grim determination. It is the moment, in my eyes, that Subaru can truly, finally, be called a hero. And that is an incredible moment, because in any other anime, the hero just is, they are a hero and always were, or became one suddenly after something happened. In Re:Zero, Subaru goes from a selfish, deeply flawed arsehole to an, albeit still flawed, but truly believable hero.
It's also, in my opinion, Subaru's coolest quote. "I know hell. I've seen it many times. And I'm the only one who needs to go through it.. *That's what I'm here for."* It's the most confident he's ever sounded, and everything he said is true after all. Even Garfiel can sense how earnest Subaru is when he says it; he's rendered speechless. He's hellbent on saving his loved ones and damn is it cool.
What is great about that episode is that a lot of people can relate to it regardless of gender. A lot of us, especially us zoomers and late millennial do have a good life that we really shouldn't complain about. However, we have these weights on our shoulders and get depressed in our own world. This is Subaru in a nutshell. I would kill to have had parents like him, but who knows if I would have acted any different than him. The author has thought out every detail from what I have scene and is what makes this isekai really good. It is thought out rather than a quick written cash grab.
Even if you don’t have parents as wonderful as Subaru’s, I think one of the messages that his parents give in that you don’t “owe” your parents anything (“we didn’t have you so you could do something for us, we had you so we could do something for you”) is something kids who have not so good parents deserve to learn too.
@@ma.2089 That is a very good point. My Mom my whole life has had the sentiment for everything. That I owe her everything. I was never raised that way that I do this because I love you and there is nothing else behind it. Ya she quote on quote spoiled me, but there was always a catch. What I liked about Subaru's parents is that they seemed like the type of parents that put effort into his mental health. Like a lot of us here, we don't have the mental support. Had to raise myself basically lol. Man now I am hit in the feels again. I wanted to be done with those feels the first time I watched. Anyway, good takeaway that I missed ... even though he talked about that in the video ... ya.
Yep thats definitely the best episode. When I first saw the title/thumbnail of this video I thought "if its not the one where he talks to his parents hes crazy".
Never expected to see you here. Seems like you have good taste in both video games and what you watch in your freetime. Top 10 strongest enemies in Re:Zero lore when?? :)
As much as I love Parent and child, (and it really is a hell of an episode.) I've got to give that to The Taste of Death. Just the emotional gut punch with Beatrice, only to have that despair snowball throughout the entire episode left me shell shocked for weeks...
@@sableaskew8074 thanks, the last few months have been hard on everyone, but hopefully things will start to get sooner or later. I don't remember where I found my profile picture, I've used it for years.
Never thought of it that way but you are absolutely right. I strive not to be Subaru as he is, but to grow along with him as he learns to love himself and the world around him.
Yeah, you're totally right. Subaru is improving as not many of us can and in a way, it's more of a power fantasy than just getting all the girls, being super charismatic, and being physically super strong.
I love how this series shows why Subaru thinks the way he does. Parent and Child re-contextualized a TON of stuff from S1 (especially the Royal Selection tantrum and the self-loathing he expresses to Rem). In a similar vein, when Otto calls him out for not trusting others to help with his problems, Subaru notes to himself that he DID try getting help from Roswaal and Echidna and they tried to/are screwing him over. - Edit: Thanks for mentioning how Subaru is perfectly justified in being mortified by Roswaal's abuse. Knowing that a dude is perfectly willing to harm, torment, and even kill the people you love just to keep you in line is a nightmare all on its own. Add to that the fact that Roswaal knows about Return by Death (if only partially) and how it deepens/twists the isolation and abuse since he's technically the only person Subaru can talk about it to.
I love the fear and dread in Roswaal and Subaru’s...well, relationship, just due to how messed up and twisted it is. Roswaal (by his own narration) sees Subaru as a surrogate son and wants the boy to become a man like him. Only Roswaal’s an amoral monster who has killed several of his actual biologists children to selfishly extend his own life, and his wants to corrupt Subaru into a mirror of himself who would do anything for Emilia’s sake, especially things she’d never want: Roswaal is definitely an evil counterpart of Mr. Natsuki, even sporting similar lines (“I wanted you to become just like me”)
@@GenerationZ313 it's in the novel but it's also implied with his goal. I dont remember if it was said or not, I'd have to rewatch s2 p1 to see if he really did say it. I dont remember
@@bat9056 Don't think it was mentioned in the scene, but I wouldn't be surprised if he thought that too. Especially after the loop where Otto and the other villagers get killed by Garf for trying to help him.
@@GenerationZ313 It’s mentioned at the end of Part 1, though indirectly. Roswaal knew Echidna personally 400 years ago. Obviously, he can’t be that old since humans don’t live that long...unless one were to use magic. The Sanctuary has a means of removing the souls of its inhabitants, leaving them as empty shells. Satella can also possess Emilia’s body and use it as her own, thanks to their similarities. Combine that with Roswaal’s ‘family’ all having the same name and... Well, it’s confirmed in the novels, but Subaru does put together the pieces himself
This show felt very personal to me. I shut down around the age of 11. I was getting bullied at school and my parents were getting a divorce. My family dynamic was unhealthy even before the divorce, so it became very messy. There were periods when I made friends, but I only ever hung out with them at school. I didn’t really try to understand people or grow until I was 20 years old. I lost almost 10 years doing nothing but watching Netflix. I was never socially adept, but I was very far behind by the time I was halfway through college. Very talkative (still kinda am), interrupting often, and avoiding consequences at the cost of relationships. I improved a lot during that time but I never truly believed in myself and always deferred to others when needing to make a decision. I fell back into my slump after college ended and I wasn’t surrounded by my college friends anymore. I’m working on having more faith in myself and allowing myself to make mistakes instead of avoiding situations altogether. I recently started exercising alone (which makes me very uncomfortable), indoor rock climbing, and eating healthier. I still have a lot of maturing to do, but I’m proud of the steps I’ve taken so far.
While Subaru's emotional turmoil regarding his school life is definitely relatable in a lot of ways, the aspect of this episode that got to me the most was his relationship with his parents. At the end when he apologizes for not being able to do more for them, his mother's answer "We didn't have you so you could do something for us. We had you because we wanted to do something for you" I just. I just started crying. Because despite all of Subaru's faults and struggles his parents still love him unconditionally, and that's something that I always envied others for. It was a really impactful scene
This is the case with a lot of parents. It’s different because Subarus parents were actually really good. Unless your parents did something inexcusable, and downright terrible. They still probably loved you and care for you. I didn’t notice this until I was older that despite how many shitty things my mom did, she did a lot of good things too. Thats what hit so hard is that I could see something like this happening with someone, and you don’t really appreciate your parents until its too late (but like I said, its completely okay to hate your parents if they WERE that horrible)
@@chelronin7843 oh yeah def! I don't hate my parents lol, not rlly, they did the best they could with the hand that they were given but it doesn't change the fact their actions still hurt me. Those statements are not contradictory. The difference here is that Subaru's parents show it, not only with actions but with words. It's quite touching
This episode saved me. It completely emotionally prepared me for my changed life during 2020 without a doubt, and is truly deserving of the a masterpiece episode. My fantastic mother passed away from cancer shortly after this episode aired and the grief was unbearable, reality sunk in and I truly felt alone in my room same as Subaru right there and then. An identical reflection I saw myself struggling, running out of time and this episode wasn't a coincidence I am sure of it as I am stronger today for it. Treasure the bonds of our parents especially with what the past year has brought us, we will be okay eventually
I’m so sorry for your loss. My mom had a brush with cancer about fifteen years ago, and to this day I have never been more terrified than I was that year. I’m glad you made it through.
@@mst3kharris Thankyou, there definitely was dark times but lockdown provided more quality time with family last year knowing we wouldn't get another year.
I would say that Re:Zero is my favorite horror series because it creates a better atmosphere than most anime can with music and even utilizing the oppressive sunlight in the plains with Echidna, a rarely used backdrop for horror. Whoever says the dialogue heavy episodes are bad because they aren’t exciting clearly don’t understand half of the greatness of the show. You definitely spent your time well, Geoff.
Right but, Re: Zero really isn’t Horror, is it? It’s goal isn’t to unnerve of disturb you. It’s definitely graphic and full of intense psychological drama, but really the show is a Drama set in Dark Fantasy. It’s entire goal is distinctly different than that of horror.
@@bubbasgotback431 I would argue that the horror is existential in concept, an idea that shines out of every pore as well as the drama. But since it does the horror best, I claim it to be a horror,
@@everyanimereactionever I don’t mean to say the show isn’t *horrifying* in places, but that the entire goal of the story is not to unnerve you, which IS the purpose of the Horror genre. The show is a thriller by nature, not horror.
Season 1 was all about Subaru learning to recognize and accept his self-hatred so that he could not only be consciously critical of himself, but also learn how to work around those flaws. However, that’s only the first step. Season 2 is about Subaru learning how to take that acceptance and use is to become someone who will not only be loved by others, but also someone who can love himself. Throwing away one’s pride can be just as harmful as clinging to it; by humbling himself to save Emilia during the White Whale/Petelgeuse arc, he inadvertently lost himself in self-loathing. If he is to move forward as a person, he needs to learn to accept the love given to him by others and find value in himself through that. Even if they can never truly understand him, and worse yet, if the only people who can understand him are people like the witches, that does not make the love of those he calls his friends any less valuable.
The “Start from Zero” scene hit me personally (especially when Subaru said he hated himself). I didn’t think this show would hit close to home as well as that did. Then this episode happened.
Spoilers for most recent episode. I think the episode coming next week may be a strong contender, as long as it's Subaru's talk with Emilia. He's gonna have to hard explain why he didn't hold her hand all night, and hopefully she'll explain herself to him too. I won't get into WN spoilers but it should be fantastic.
Ruffsenpai did. Probably cuz he hates Subaru, thought Subaru was a good person UNTIL episode 18, and completely lacks understanding for the character. So basically, as long as u don’t hate Subaru, understand what’s going on, and aren’t just watching re zero cuz ur a simp for Rem and hate everyone else, S2 e4 is a cathartic masterpiece lol
that clock scene, even just seeing it now again brings back the feelings and moments od my life back then, i think this serie is amazing not just the amazing story telling but also showing people that suffer from this (skipping school etc. bc it is a really dark and lonely time) that chance is possible and that it is nothing less of heroic to change yourself to the better
My mom died in February, so even though this episode is brilliant, I don’t know how long it will be before I can watch it without breaking down. I caught up on season two today and just getting through Emilia’s backstory was like a punch to the heart.
This episode is literally just people talking in a normal setting and it made me cry like 4 times. Easily my favorite episode of Re:Zero, or any anime for that matter. Not only is it meaningful for Subaru’s growth, but it also resonates with me very personally. Both of my parents are so kind and caring, and I often feel like I don’t appreciate them enough. I fear the day I will be without them, and hope that I’ll get to say everything I need to when that day comes.
This episode is one of my favorite of anime history. It's just so good and relatable. Like, man, that thing about Subaru saying that as a child he was smart, good at sports, a kid prodigy to say, but as he grows up it's inevitable that there are people who are just better than him, more talented or who work harder and in the end he was just not special at all. That's how life is for most of us, we all had that moment when we thought we were different, meant to do great things, being the best at something and have a job you love. And in reality you look in the mirror and sees someone depressed, with no job, or friends, no relationship, studying something just to show to your family that you're not completely worthless.
Otto became my favourite character. He was just such a cool, dare I say, badass character in season 2. When we first see him hes kinda like subaru - a pathetic weakling, but slowly he gets character development.
@@thecoolnoob1288 I sort of get the feeling he sees Subaru as an almost inspirational figure. Like, if Subaru can become a hero, maybe he can, too. It feels like he's drawn to Subaru by that kind of hope.
Huh weird, it started raining after I watched this episode, same thing happened when I read this part in the WN for some reason. It's a terrible day for rain
That darn clock... While I was watching that episode, I could feel my chest tightening and my breath catching in my throat. It hit so close to home that it was a knife to the heart. That was the moment that sealed the deal. Re:zero is, without a doubt, a classic unfolding before our eyes.
@@skelebro9999 what does that supposed to mean? With Rem gone the story is still a masterpiece. Subaru has Emilia, otto, and Beatrice who support him emotionally rem isn't the only one.
"Kindness and attempts at understanding from loved ones can feel suffocating rather than helpful, because those are the exact people you're letting down, and if they just give up on you then at least you'd be able to stop hurting them and more easily give up on yourself." Wow. Wasn't expecting Geoff to make an attempt on my life when I clicked on this video. This hit home really hard. Just like Re:Zero then I guess :P
Re:Zero is a absolute masterpiece and nothing can change my mind. I have absolute full blinding faith that White fox can make a amazing anime adaptation of Re:Zero, especially from what I have seen so far.
I watched Re:Zero right when I tried changing my life back when I was 15. I could really relate to Subaru in a whole new level than I had ever related to any character before. Even though I got "killed" more times than many people would endure, just like Subaru, I've developed enough mental strength to endure through the everlasting challenges, making my way through hardship by trying countless times. Hence, I can absolutely say Re:Zero was - and still is - part of my self change. However, I didn't really finish my process of becoming a winner; I am really close though. I worked a lot in academics and am really really close to getting into one of the best universities in my country, whilst having become one of the best in my school, which is the best school in my state. Not just that, but I am also close to having a girlfriend - at least I hope so, unless she rejects me, lol. What I want to say is this: Re:Zero can connect to it's audience and make an impact them great enough to help it change itself. As I've changed, and am close to becoming someone with somewhat of a success, many more people, mainly men, are probably following the same path. That's precisely why Re:Zero is one of my favorite animes. And for everyone who watched it, I'd advise you to learn from the show and try your utmost best to become someone better. Becoming a stronger warrior not only helps your life become better - as well as it gives it more meaning -, but it also makes the people around you better, inspiring them to move on and grow stronger. The impact you can have - and your potencial - is impossible to be measured, and you not reaching your full potencial hurts the world, even if just a bit.
@@TheGamingTeam101Tgt101 eh not rlly for me. I rate it a 8/10. Pretty good but not a masterpiece. Also you dont know what the guys intentions are, from what i see, i just see him agreeing that rezero is a masterpiece. Nothing condescending because its just text, you cant even hear his/her voice.
*You're goddamn right it is* I think this was the episode that turned a lot of people over to liking Subaru, since it further explored the rougher edges people seem to have issues with and marked a major milestone in demonstrating how he has changed. I still stand by that I think the reason a lot of people hated him in the first season was because they recognized those aspects of his character in themselves and didn't like it, and this episode serves to explain a lot of his really petulant behavior in that season (especially the royal outburst).
Also, really loved how you pointed out that the school was the challenge not confronting his parents, but because of how much he has developed the actual challenge was easy.
Still love when his Dad gave him a loaded pop to drink, totally relatable relationship I have with my own old man. It's the small things family do with one another that sell the whole thing.
Hey try watching these re zero analysis videos as well, im sure you will fell inlove more with re zero once you watched them. "The Doubt of re zero" & "Anime parents done right"
dude, ep18 literally the turning point of that past subaru, and the thing i love about that ep is that almost 80% of that ep was 2 characters talking to each other for 25+ min straight and actually entertaining
It was a good sentiment, what the mom said. It came while I was at around a year into searching for a job out of college. I majored in animation, but couldn't find any work. Not specifically because of Covid, I graduated in May of 2019, but I didn't have the experience required or the connections needed to find a job. No one was looking at me, even though I'd been told my work is great by peers and professors and portfolio reviewers... When Covid hit, jobs became more prevalent in the industry to some extent. I was lucky and found a job back in late August, still with 'em at the time of writing this. But for that year and a half, hell, more than that since I was looking for work before graduation, it felt like this for me, but unlike with Subaru or the other people that suffer from it, I didn't have a choice.
I like how this episode explains why Subaru acts so goofy and over the top in social situations. It’s things like this that really makes him feel like a real person
@@enriquealan2481 i was so close to dropping this anime after the Royal Selection tantrum, it hurted so much to see Subarus goddam childish and embarassing behavior. And at that time in the anime i didn´t know if this woud be his standart character....but i´m so glad that i kept watching.

This is what we all wish we could have, that one final goodbye. Honestly I think this help me with my fathers passing, helps you really see those helping you stick together.

@@PoiColle I’m reading the manga and it’s cuts the time of one peice drastically it’s insane I finished an arc in the manga after like 4 volumes just to find out that those 4 volumes were like 80 episodes in the anime and it only took me like 2 hours to read all 4 which is roughly like 6 episodes worth of time but god is it better.
Ah yes, another reason for Mother's Basement to talk about Re:Zero. I'm not complaining. On another topic, I seriously do not understand the people who say Re:Zero is bad, season 1 was already _really good_ ,season 2 is even better, and the novel is fire.
They probably have the bad preconception of isekai=bad, isekais can be some of the best fantasy stories but also the worst cus it represents both the peak of writing a fantasy setting but also the most bland boring writing there is, the later being the one that dominates anime, manga and manhwa, that or they don't have a heart or taste at all, or feel triggered cus they would act like Subaru but refuse to admit it
Two things: One, I LOVE how introspective and thoughtful your Re:Zero videos are, and it's really a good push to give the series a shot on my end. Two? With how methodical you are, I'd *adore* a video on the Lost Generation. It's such an intriguing phenomenon!
Very good insight on that episode, shit had me crying rivers (especially at the part where his mom says "itterasshai"), though I'd still put season 1 episode 15 at the top in terms of pure emotion, production value, soundtrack (requiem of silence FTW) and just overall delivery. The rollercoaster of emotions you witness in that episode; from rage to hatred to pure bleakness and despair is just something I've NEVER experienced in any other piece of fiction. On the other hand, I can definitely relate and see others relating to this episode more as it carried such deep messages. Ah fuck it both episodes (18, too) were absolute masterpieces.
Did you really just add stay alive in the background man I just finished directors cut yesterday night and knocked out on season 2 part 2 episode 1 man just after you feel good the plot twist hits ☹️😣😖🥺😢😭😭😭😭😭
well, i’ve caught up with re zero after starting it 4 days ago, and what else is there other to say other than goddamn. specifically this episode left such an impression on me, and i can’t even pinpoint exactly why. A good show is light on filler, because it paces out the action to break up scenes of characters talking. A great show doesn't need to, because scenes, or even entire episodes, of characters just talking can be just as captivating as any action sequence.
This episode hit me in the back of the head like watching Welcome to the NHK did. Albeit I'm sober and not a shut in anymore so it's not totally the same as NHK but I think inadequacy never goes away and this episode hit that raw nerve.
I’m not the biggest re:zero fan but I personally think it has maybe the best written monologue/dialogue scenes of any show I’ve ever seen. The Rem one, parent child, and the Ekidna scenes are all my favorite parts of the show.
I seriously owe a big thank you to this channel. I didn’t really know what Re:Zero was, but then I watched the Subaru vs Petelgeuse Animelee and that got me to watch the show. That was a great decision. Re:Zero is PHENOMENAL and I’m so glad that I’ve seen it.
You thought that episode was ReZero at its best, we are actually just getting started especially with the buildup from the first episode of Season 2 Part 2.
I'm waiting for what's in a waifu about Emilia-tan, But you should definitely make it after season 2 part 2. I love your re:zero content keep up the good work!
You can just tell that Re:Zero was written with a clear plan of what it wanted to be right from the beginning. It's awesome when you get an episode 2 seasons in that allows you to better understand everything that came before it. Idk if I'm more invested in the story the This show is telling or the message its sending but both are phenomenal
Oh dear God ep. 4 came out of nowhere for me, over the literal thousands of hours of watching tv, anime, movies all of that I have yet to come across a show that hit the feelings of isolation and desire to give up from being a quote "shut-in". Among the amazing and enjoyable very anime like rest of re:zero, this episode literally left me speechless and i hope to see more like this in the future. Hopefully not just from re:zero

I think I related to Subaru’s mindset too much throughout the second season. In the loop where he is ‘saved’ by Beatrice, when everything was going wrong before that I was thinking ‘well, he can reset after he gains some more knowledge of this timeline’, and when she did save him I shared in all his confusion and panic as he wondered if the checkpoint might save. I even found myself thinking he should or that I would do the same actions he did, right down to that heartbreaking attempted suicide. I even wanted him to gain echidnas gift at the end, because I saw whatever her greed may lead to (which I now realize was his pain and his life over and over) as a necessary evil in order to gain the knowledge to save everyone, and moreover, a confidant who shared in his secret. I simply wanted him to have the best shot at happiness and to not be alone anymore. It made that scene all the more lonely and heartbreaking when everyone’s intentions became clear. Re:zero is a good show man
To this day I am incredibly in awe of how well-spoken all of your videos are even if there is a script. I would never be able to write or prepare anything as close.
Fine Geoff. Fine. I finally gave Re:Zero a shot after dismissing it as Pandering Wish Fulfillment™. It's a great show and I was wrong. This episode really made me think that this was more than that and I think you're right. Re:Zero is an absolute masterwork.

It's wild to think about the negotiations that must have had to happen to give this episode it's extended run time
Exactly!
_(I was _*_piping-hot furious_*_ when I first saw that)._
The last part of SAO Alicization's anime would've been a lot better if A-1 took the same approach as White Fox did with Re:Zero; remove the Opening & Ending videos/songs when it's needed & extending the episode length. But no; it seems that A-1 doesn't care for putting out a proper adaptation for SAO's anime.

Welcome to the NHK did this for me years ago. That anime changed my life. I recommend giving it a watch if you haven't
Take care of yourself. Big grandmotherly hug.
This is a fantastic point you bring up. It is both a super empowering yet tragic moment and I love it to pieces.
It's also, in my opinion, Subaru's coolest quote.
"I know hell. I've seen it many times. And I'm the only one who needs to go through it..
*That's what I'm here for."*
It's the most confident he's ever sounded, and everything he said is true after all. Even Garfiel can sense how earnest Subaru is when he says it; he's rendered speechless. He's hellbent on saving his loved ones and damn is it cool.
Well said.
well said man, this was my favorite scene of the first cour.

Nah dude, you can clearly tell he hates it
I love how this series shows why Subaru thinks the way he does.
-
Edit: Thanks for mentioning how Subaru is perfectly justified in being mortified by Roswaal's abuse.
Only Roswaal’s an amoral monster who has killed several of his actual biologists children to selfishly extend his own life, and his wants to corrupt Subaru into a mirror of himself who would do anything for Emilia’s sake, especially things she’d never want:
Roswaal is definitely an evil counterpart of Mr. Natsuki, even sporting similar lines (“I wanted you to become just like me”)

All the best bro

I think this was the episode that turned a lot of people over to liking Subaru, since it further explored the rougher edges people seem to have issues with and marked a major milestone in demonstrating how he has changed.

I heard some pretty good things about this show, I'm definitely gonna give it a shot soon.
do it, although imo season 1 isn't as good as two its still great

If someone says this episode was boring we throwing hands. As someone who lost a parent early last year, this episode fucking hit me man. As someone who very rarely cries I was bawling by the end. This is what we all wish we could have, that one final goodbye. Honestly I think this help me with my fathers passing, helps you really see those helping you stick together.
people say its shit in a cartoon but then simp hard for 10 episodes of 45 minute episodes for people talking in live action Finnish Dramas are rad
four years of wait has never been so worth it
Only Re:Zero can make an episode that makes me cry multiple times in a single episode
"REMinisces" oh, you monster. You FIEND
New Mother’s Basement video on Re:Zero? Count me in!
God, I cherish and appreciate these video essays genuinely. Much love and support!
Don't lie to me Mother's Basement. You like the episode because you can see Echidna wearing a school outfit, right?
hearing Stay Alive in the background during the video is such an emotional kick in the balls, it makes me tear up each time I hear it.
It's this episode that actually made me think about watching this series. The reason I haven't yet is because I'm watching One Piece.
This is why i'll never watch a long running shounen ever again. I feel so overwhelmed by the episodes left. I'd rather join at the start than ever after.
Read it
Yessss
@@PoiColle If you can, try and read the manga. Covers the content so much faster, smoother, etc. And then you can go back to your fave bits animated!
They probably have the bad preconception of isekai=bad, isekais can be some of the best fantasy stories but also the worst cus it represents both the peak of writing a fantasy setting but also the most bland boring writing there is, the later being the one that dominates anime, manga and manhwa, that or they don't have a heart or taste at all, or feel triggered cus they would act like Subaru but refuse to admit it
Does it have a happy ending?
@@sableaskew8074 the novel isnt over yet, it just finished arc 6 out of 11 arcs.
@@midknightshade330 o, ok
@@sableaskew8074 but if we were to predict the ending, id say we'll have a happy ending or a bittersweet one.
This episode reminded so much of Futurama's "Game of Tones" episode. The tears man...
Two things: One, I LOVE how introspective and thoughtful your Re:Zero videos are, and it's really a good push to give the series a shot on my end. Two? With how methodical you are, I'd *adore* a video on the Lost Generation. It's such an intriguing phenomenon!
Can we just talk about the "HEE HEE" from Kenichi in the EN dub tho as he moonwalks into the room
Parent and Child is easily my favorite episode in all of anime, fr got me to shed tears in two separate occasions because it was that damn amazing. cant wait for the rest of season 2 part 2 to blow my expectations out of the water yet again
Always love to hear your take on Re:zero, keep up the great work!
Geoff... you have such an amazing brain. Nothing I love more than hearing you analyze my favourite shows
It still floors me that dubbed Subaru has the same VA as Rean Schwarzer in Trails of Cold Steel.
Range, man...
Sub Subaru voices Male Byleth
Both Subarus have dummy thicc range
I never get tired of Re:Zero on this channel
ngl, when I first watched "parent and child", I legit cried
ok
Re:zero truly is a master piece
Genius. That’s the only way to describe this episode.
Deep dives like this are why I love your content, man. I was getting weepy while remembering the episode and listening to your analysis of it all.
Albeit I'm sober and not a shut in anymore so it's not totally the same as NHK but I think inadequacy never goes away and this episode hit that raw nerve.
the NHK scene of the MC running out of the Class room ouch
I’m not the biggest re:zero fan but I personally think it has maybe the best written monologue/dialogue scenes of any show I’ve ever seen. The Rem one, parent child, and the Ekidna scenes are all my favorite parts of the show.
The value of life episode deserves an Oscar nomination. Iconic and very emotional
Wait till you see his speech in arc 5 (S3)
I seriously owe a big thank you to this channel. I didn’t really know what Re:Zero was, but then I watched the Subaru vs Petelgeuse Animelee and that got me to watch the show. That was a great decision. Re:Zero is PHENOMENAL and I’m so glad that I’ve seen it.
You thought that episode was ReZero at its best, we are actually just getting started especially with the buildup from the first episode of Season 2 Part 2.
This episode and Season 1 episode 15 (The Outside of Madness) are tied for my favorites in the series. Not just peak RE:Zero but peak anime for me.

"Parent and Child" made me cry so hard thank you for talking about it!!
This episode made Natsuki Subaru into one of the greatest protagonists in all of Anime.

Absolutely perfectly summed up. "Its all in how it ends" was exactly what I needed to hear and I cried like a baby once I heard it. And I'm definitely gonna draw on that lesson as I strive for my goal of 100k subscribers this year 😁
Can't wait for your thoughts on the rest of season 2!
I very rarely even tear up over media, but this Re:Zero episode definitely made me pause to cry, a lot
Re:zero is a good show man
I've never watched any purposefully sad anime so this episode was the first time an anime made me cry
MB: "A 30 minute episode of TV anime is practically unheard of"
WhiteFox: "So let's just have the entire second cour be 30 minute episodes"
To this day I am incredibly in awe of how well-spoken all of your videos are even if there is a script. I would never be able to write or prepare anything as close.
Fine Geoff. Fine. I finally gave Re:Zero a shot after dismissing it as Pandering Wish Fulfillment™. It's a great show and I was wrong. This episode really made me think that this was more than that and I think you're right. Re:Zero is an absolute masterwork.
