I really love The Surge series because of its satisfying mutilation system. Thank goodness the devs also seems to properly implement ranged combat & better overall drone system, although I do genuinely wish for actual ranged weapons that player character could use. After all it's a bit Jarring to see no guns or even the likes of crossbow/bows in such futuristic setting. something like a hybrid weapons (i.e. rifle-spear, dual pistols - twin rigs, shotgun-staff, etc) would a good implementation for the overall melee focus combat system.
Amazing game and i totally agree with you.Hopefully part 3 will figure out a cool way of having meaningful melee combat alongside great gunplay.Something a bit similar to The Remnent of Ashes maybe as far as shooting mechanics.Never played it but i hear it's Dark Souls with guns.
I mean I’d argue it’s ok as is in terms of ranged combat with the drone. Maybe denser customisation for them. But it’s really easy to pepper someone with both at once. Wish you could hold more ammo by standard tho

Im not gonna watch but i had to leave this comment: as someone who holds the first game in incredivly high regard, this makes me so damn excited. I dont think the surge is THAT great a game, but i love it to no end because of what it represents. I played the Surge BEFORE i played LOTF and i learned 2 things from that: Lords of the Fallen is so bad it’s agony, and The Surge did everything right in terms of development. I legitimately could point for point kist how TheSurge addressed the conplaints about LOTF amd not only fixed them, but in some cases turned them into positives. Knowing through your affirmation that TheSurge2 has kept this trend of Deck13’s has me more hyped to pkay it than any amount of marketing and trailers could ever hope to achieve I look forward to coning back and watching this video in full probably like a year from now
I played LotF after The Surge also lol I found the environments and gear design really cool but otherwise it just felt off somehow and way too easy for it's own good. Surge 2 feels really similar to 1 but despite some gripes I have I can't stop playing it :) Hope you enjoy you, mate!
Nice review but I didn't like the first one so I probably won't like the sequel. Being a soulsborne fan it seems lacking atmosphere. Will you be doing a Code Vein review? I'm interested more in that game as I love the anime aesthetic.
@@mildwasabi998 its not very good, at all. its really uninspired compared to the other souls games, the enviroments are bland and so are the weapons and enemies. its not worth your time or money

@@Ashurman666 I used katanas and for me if felt light and quick. The surge did not feel light I actually think that it captured the feeling of being in a heavy suit and swinging big heavy industrial tools extremely well. Haven't played 2 yet though unfortunately I'll have to wait a bit.
@Onion Head Guy Guy Well yeah, they're katanas, what did you expect, for it to feel like you're swinging a tree? ever used a hammer or an axe or an Odachi? They're heavy and slow and it FEELS like you're swinging around a heavy piece of forge metal. And have you ever used Twin rigged weapons in Surge? They are light and quick, as much as a dual Katana is in Nioh
@@Ashurman666 LOL you ain't playing Nioh right or maybe you never played Nioh in the first place. Nioh is by far the fastest Souls-like series, bar none. with the right combo hammer/axe actually become explosive tornado, meanwhile odachi is literally has the fastest "great sword" moveset in all of Souls-like games. It's all depend on "ki pulsing & layers of combos." If you suck at it, sure as hell you gonna be pretty damn slow af.
My biggest problem with Deck13 games is the Physics. all of Deck13 Physics always feel floaty. they look the same this time around too. To me that is the largest problem they have.
So, i haven't watched the whole video yet... But, I just wanted to say, that a half to a whole year ago, I would watch multiple reviewers - yes, even IGN - not really believing in the "I got one reviewer, in which i trust" idea... You, my good sir, changed that... I'm genuinely like a little happy kid at christmas every time you upload... So, SkillUp... Have a motherfucking great day :)
You're my number one most trusted reviewer. Will grab this when it's on sale (or hope it comes to Game Pass?) because I enjoyed the first game despite all its obvious problems.
In the first surge that early cutscene (think starting cutscene) was one of the few times i watched something and felt uncomfortable with what i was watching
I never had any camera issues in the surge 1 probably because i used keyboard and mouse which worked flawlessly (unlike in souls). So if camera is problem to you and you are on pc give that a shot.
What I like about skill up reviews are they are in the views of a gamer actually not a journalist that plays it. Makes a huge difference. Skill up is a gamer that writes reviews. Not a writer that plays limited amount of games and hours. It makes a huge difference.
For me the most important info is that the combat is re balanced and the environments have improved. I absolutely adore Soulslike games but I just couldnt get past the second area of surge because all the enemies would one shot you and it completely killed any semblance of fun, especially when combined with the super confusing locations where I did not even know where the heck I am and could never find my corpse again over and over. I am a bit worried about the performance part though, I have only regular PS4 and I assume its going to be even worse.
I would try it again. You have to segment your path and focus on where you are going. Don't be afraid to meta if you don't know where to go. It is fairly easy to follow if you eliminate one path one by one and most lead to shortcuts that bring you back to the medbay. I finished the main game in 25 hours (few frustrating deaths) while playing with a light build, focusing on dodging and upgrading core power. I don't plan to take on NG or DLC but am considering this, Dark Souls 3 or Code Vein.
It's fucking unbelievable that you have only 500k subs... A channel of this quality with this much common sense should reach more people. P.S. Are you gonna review Destiny 2: Shadowkeep, boyo?
Cool, glad to know that I'm not missing anything by skipping this game. First one I enjoyed at first and as I played more of it, the more I grew to resent it. The PS4 performance certainly enforces this decision.
Good call! It's similar enough to the 1st that you probably wouldn't enjoy it. Regardless the PS4 textures on character models are deadass PS1 quality and in the busier parts of the game I'm seeing screen tearing on the reg.
I could never beat the first Surge, but it was really fun until I gave up. Got to one crazy boss area and kept getting hit from all sides and had no idea what was going on. :/
Lemme tell you about how cool The Serge 2 is. While running around an open plaza area, I found a hidden hallway off the beaten path covered in boxes and full of poison. I assumed that there must have been something cool at the end of this hallway if it had this much shit in front of it. I ran down the hallway, getting poisoned in the process and at the end of it I found nothing but an entrance to another area. I went through that and fount a small side area that was blocked off from this new area completely. Instead of a cool item I was told to go fuck myself. But that's not the end of my cool story. After I had gotten out of there and continued exploring the area, I died to some enemies and left behind a huge chunk of souls. I didn't respawn at the closest robot bonfire, instead the game places you at either the last bonfire you touched or the last place you transitioned into the area from. It put me back at the end of the ass poison hallway. With no heals stalked up to fight the poison and all the enemies respawned, I lost all my hard earned souls. Doesn't help that right outside the poison hallway are 3 guys: one melee, one with a gun and one that tosses molotovs. Fun game, really improved on the original.
Good luck criticizing this franchise. Apparently anything different than a triple A must be worshipped or you're some sheeple consumer that doesn't know any better. We definitely must praise mid tier developers listening to feedbacks but these guys had 3 games and still can't figure out a camera or work on a decent narrative cause they're too focused on copying dark souls style? Come on.
tripod enemy was soooo easy to kill but you needed to parry it, it was designed to force you to learn how to parry. Never skipped enemies in the surge the combat was too much fun to do so.
personally for me i can nvr get into those action games where you push a button and the character does a huge swinging attacking or a spin attack or does something way more complex then just the real life action of pressing a button or pressing the same button three times for a combo like in monster hunter and doing 2-3 different looking attacks and always wished there was more of a control system like there was in the skate games (i kno you wouldnt get to look and move with both joysticks or mouse and WASD but it be fucking cool to run around and swing your mouse or joystick in a specific way to swing your sword in a specific way) in skate it actually felt like i was doing a pop shove it pulling the joystick down and bringing it around the side in the semi circle and it actually felt like doing a hardflip bring the joystick down flicking it to the side then flicking it again diagonally and if you didnt get the right motion down you didnt land the trick now thats what i wish action games where like
fuck i got so distracted by my rant i forgot my point of the comment... in spite of everything i just said about action games this game looks cool as fuck to watch

the next surge shall have boss battle feature when u cut a boss battle with a heavy attack, the limbs should be cut off and their limbs would be recovered overtime during a battle. it is on a future theme game and they should make boss battle slow at first cus they got repair parts in their body, the more they use those parts to repair their body they get faster. like you know what i mean and i would love games like that

I played LotF after The Surge also lol I found the environments and gear design really cool but otherwise it just felt off somehow and way too easy for it's own good. Surge 2 feels really similar to 1 but despite some gripes I have I can't stop playing it :) Hope you enjoy you, mate!
logs into youtube - new SkillUp review, uploaded 4 minutes ago - DROP EVERYTHING :)
don't you mean shill up?
Nice review but I didn't like the first one so I probably won't like the sequel. Being a soulsborne fan it seems lacking atmosphere.
Will you be doing a Code Vein review? I'm interested more in that game as I love the anime aesthetic.
Yep
"this is what Anthem was supposed to feel like"
Great review mate! Is this coming to the switch?
Sadly no
Skill Up well sh*t :(
Gratz on 500k, Ralph. Keep it UP!
is it better on ps4 now, in 2022? It's on my wishlist :)
Day i lost the count, of waiting for the sekiro review😂
@@ibrahimbaghdadi4995 yeah maybe you're right
@@mildwasabi998 I'm also waiting for a Sekiro review. But he talked about Sekiro on twitter and how he doesn't like it.
@@pascal7498 oh that's a shame. It's alright though if he doesn't like it
@@mildwasabi998 its not very good, at all. its really uninspired compared to the other souls games, the enviroments are bland and so are the weapons and enemies. its not worth your time or money
@@rileygrannell7235 i want the review because i enjoy skill up's content. I've almost got the platinum for sekiro😂. I respect your opinion and agree to an extent but I'm a fromsoft fanboy so wether good or bad I'll buy their games. And sekiro is really good imo
Skill: this is the lightest and flashiest of the souls-likes.
Nioh: Um, I think you forgot about me, man.
FACTS
@Onion Head Guy Guy Nioh is pretty flashy yes but light? Not really
Hate this franchise tbph but I love hearing your opinion on things in general. Keep up the good work, dude.
Hate? :/ Why though?
So, i haven't watched the whole video yet... But, I just wanted to say, that a half to a whole year ago, I would watch multiple reviewers - yes, even IGN - not really believing in the "I got one reviewer, in which i trust" idea... You, my good sir, changed that... I'm genuinely like a little happy kid at christmas every time you upload... So, SkillUp... Have a motherfucking great day :)
You're my number one most trusted reviewer. Will grab this when it's on sale (or hope it comes to Game Pass?) because I enjoyed the first game despite all its obvious problems.
Good call! Once it gets patched it'll be a solid GP or $20-30 title imho
The first game was gnarly I can't wait to play this tomorrow
Have you disabled camera smoothing? It disable the camera momentum after you stop moving the stick. It makes the camera more bearable.
I'm proud to say that I have bought at least 2 games from your reviews. I really respect the way you do em! Thank you my man!
Digital Prince what 2
@@nero3948 division 2 and far cry 5 new dawn!
Digital Prince ah
Well played on the deck reference and poking fun at yourself. That was really funny.
This was honestly my favorite game of the year
It's fucking unbelievable that you have only 500k subs... A channel of this quality with this much common sense should reach more people.
P.S. Are you gonna review Destiny 2: Shadowkeep, boyo?
I hope this means the start of a new Franchise or even a sub-genre within souls-like
Bro why is it saying you have no subscribers is TH-cam being a troll?
We are all a lie.
Just one of those stupid things YT has changed.
They have moved the subscriber number from under the subscribe button, it is now under the page name on the left, well for me it is.
Where the hour long ramble about boats?!
Great video as always and grats on 500k but im not gunna lie, Idk how long ive been subbed but I thought he had like 2 mil subscribers lol.
500k subs congrats Skillup
Congrat on 500k
Thank you for giving this game some much needed attention. So when will you give the Earth Defence Force series some love ???
I could never beat the first Surge, but it was really fun until I gave up. Got to one crazy boss area and kept getting hit from all sides and had no idea what was going on. :/
You mention Sekiro in every Souls-like game review now, I feel like you are trolling us SkillUp lol.
Thank you for the heads up with those textures- waiting for the day 1 patch
Come on.
WOOOOO gratz man for 500k. You deserve more 😁
What is the beat u used for the "get lost segment" at 3:02 I've Hurd it before and I need to know. Good review btw I'm still playing the game
the tamborine the guy kicks around at 1:16 really has me interested
tripod enemy was soooo easy to kill but you needed to parry it, it was designed to force you to learn how to parry. Never skipped enemies in the surge the combat was too much fun to do so.
Dude, did you film the footage from your tv with a camera?
Oh shit 500k well deserved man
You’re by and far the best video game reviewer
Could use a dose of humor, though. He's very informative and fair in most cases, buuuut slightly boring to listen to for half an hour.
personally for me i can nvr get into those action games where you push a button and the character does a huge swinging attacking or a spin attack or does something way more complex then just the real life action of pressing a button or pressing the same button three times for a combo like in monster hunter and doing 2-3 different looking attacks and always wished there was more of a control system like there was in the skate games (i kno you wouldnt get to look and move with both joysticks or mouse and WASD but it be fucking cool to run around and swing your mouse or joystick in a specific way to swing your sword in a specific way) in skate it actually felt like i was doing a pop shove it pulling the joystick down and bringing it around the side in the semi circle and it actually felt like doing a hardflip bring the joystick down flicking it to the side then flicking it again diagonally and if you didnt get the right motion down you didnt land the trick now thats what i wish action games where like
fuck i got so distracted by my rant i forgot my point of the comment... in spite of everything i just said about action games this game looks cool as fuck to watch
Will you do a Shadowkeep review? There are so many recent Luke Smith interviews where he talks about the tough times during the Activision reich, which need to be aknowleged. You’re the perfect man for it.
That fight looked like the axe fight in the new Terminator film.
Love your work as always bub. I do feel like in your last few reviews there have been brief mentions of sekiro... Slyly squeezing it's review into other reviews xD
The heartbeat sound effect at 2:55 felt like a jumpscare.
How’s the game now a days? Have they improved performance for PS4?
the next surge shall have boss battle feature when u cut a boss battle with a heavy attack, the limbs should be cut off and their limbs would be recovered overtime during a battle. it is on a future theme game and they should make boss battle slow at first cus they got repair parts in their body, the more they use those parts to repair their body they get faster. like you know what i mean and i would love games like that
I just started NG+ on The Surge 2. I love this game. I hope The Surge 3 comes out. I look forward to it being so good that it's compared directly to Dark Souls 3
Is NG+ forced like LotF and the 1st Surge if you defeat the final boss ?
Something about the graphics of this game and the first just make my eyes glaze over, like I have no idea what's going on and I can't focus on any details. It's weird. Any similar experiences?
Deck13 youtube page have only 667 suscribers!
support them guys. We need this kind of gamer developers.
Are you sure there is a new game plus mode? Devs said it might not make it to release and will be included later.
The camera break you showed wasnt that bad....its a fast moving boss and the camera snapped back to position rather fast and your view wasnt blocked...
I just finished this on the XBOX One X. Loved it and am starting my new game +. Love games that make you have to 'get good' to succeed.
This game has the best health system I’ve ever played! You can go into a boss fight with no health and come out the other end with full health! Uses kinetic energy to fill batteries it’s the best
after sekiro I have 1 question... can I parry and deflect attacks?
