Joe Johnston concept AT_AT LIVES

  • Welcome back to another concept vehicle ILM style paint job.
    This time it's the influential Joe Johnston AT-AT concept drawing from 1976, for The Empire Strikes Back.
    Johnston and McQuarrie were, in my book, the most influential designers for the look and feel of the Star Wars universe.
    I hope you enjoy this little trip into painting another Star Wars ILM style miniature. Considerably different to modern model painting techniques, the original ILM look is a lot more random and free, which makes them a joy to paint.
    Thanks for checking this out. Happy modelling everyone.

    I really, really love how all this early, wonderful concept art is being rediscovered and even turned into models. These things held me spellbound back in the 1970s when I was a kid - I've go gray hairs now, but I still LOVE seeing this stuff. Congratulations!

      Thanks Viceroy. I do love a concept drawing. It inspires the rest of the design in ones head. Also adding the details is great fun just kitbashing and making it your own. More coming soon. Thanks for checking it out :-)

    So basically, it's an Imperial Sandcrawler?

    • @APmodels

      Yeah i guess so. Concept sketches just have that kind of influence and style.

    • @Dario-yd2zt

      You are 💯 % right. That was the first that came to my mind when I saw it. It's a new Sand Crawler concept so the Jawas will be happy this Christmas. And the lower panels at the side of the caterpillars are to low. That makes the vehicle a non all terrain transport. But the weathering technique is realistically perfect, interesting and cool.

      @Dario-yd2zt 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Whe I see it I can feel the heavy weight and the hard, un-penetrable structure, like a Imperial vehicle should be. Congratulations. Good job.

      @hopduncan7905 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Hey the Jawas had to get the sandcrawler from someone. It was probably abandoned by some empire's years ago, so the Jewas snatched it up.

      Weldon 3 or Weldon 4; qualifier: if you have tight joints. 4 is less viscous so will penetrate joints deeper but takes longer to fully dry. 4 will also have less hazing. 3 is a bit more “consumer” friendly. 4 you’ll need excellent ventilation and organic respirators; always a good idea even w 3. We’ve used 4 for everything from acrylic turntable covers to scale models.

    Oy, that got my attention. Nice. Got kinda dizzy on the intro 😉.
    Coupla questions?
    Q1) what thickness acrylic/Perspex did you use? Looks like mix of 1/8 &1/4” (3mm/6mm) though looked like some was thinner, perhaps built up styrene?
    Q2) any thoughts you can share on how you did the angled edge joinery? Our laser gets here in a few weeks, thinking of making some angle jigs for fixed edge angles to see how it works, we’ll see.
    In the meantime gonna be a long night, heading over to Fusion 360 to model this thing, thinking 1:22.5 scale 😁
    Thinking it’d look nice cut out of SR-MDF as well.
    Cheers, nice work!

      @@APmodels survived the 60’s and 70’s, so was a bit nostalgic of old TV special effects. Got a lot of her drawn up in 360 last night. Think we’ll be going w SR-MDF for our version. That way we can keep the weight manageable in 22:5 and can can use the angle jig on the little J Byrnes saw for the miter cuts if the laser doesn’t “cut it” (bad early morning Dad joke). Still gonna try a angle jig on the Epi when it gets here.
      I recognize the Johnston sketch, gonna go back through the ‘ol book collection and see if I can locate any others for detailing. Might use a bit of poetic license and take some details from some of his other sketches he did while evolving the AT-AT. Gonna be a bit of a break from building Foss/Robertson inspired LDCOs (Large Dust Collecting Objects per the wife).
      Don’t make uTub vids; haven’t posted any full builds on The RPF since my son built the 22:5 Stormwalker from Leviathan years ago. Think this’ll make a good build blog…a bit of sawing/lasering , a bit of 3D printing, a bit of brass machining should make for an entertaining holiday build.
      Thanks for the inspiration 😉

    Absolutely beautiful Andy. I can see how the attention to detail really sells the paint job. It certainly looks more like a Sandcrawler than the final AT-AT. My only query is the aesthetic - I'm not sure about an Imperial vehicle looking grungy. I'm sure that they would have lots of minions whose job it would be to keep things like this clean!

    • @APmodels
