So basically, he was saying either get a first so the effort was worth it, or barely try and get a third, but at least then hopefully you had a busy social life. If you fall short of either expectation and end up somewhere in the middle or fail, then it's a waste of time. I got a 2:1 myself, and I found his take on it hilarious :)
