Anyone else so old they can remember when a radio station could choose what song to play?

I heard all of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" on the radio before going straight out and buying the LP. I later bought the CD and I also have it on minidisc. It's my favourite album of all time.

The four 'middle years' albums are all what I call *perfect albums,* that is, every track is great and is where it belongs. Arguably the *Golden Years* of Pink Floyd, from: Echoes - DSOTM - WYWH - to Animals - All on one playlist. Perfect.
But yes, *ExEssex* - WYWH remains the jewel in the crown for me too.

Even better, calling up the station, having the DJ actually answering the phone and playing requests…
Thank You Richard Neer @WNEW-FM 102.7 in NYC…. the song?

WXRT 93.1 Chicago used to be that way before being bought out. They still have the same radio hosts, but it's now programmed. No longer progressive. They used to feature new music before it became popular mainstream oh and yes, the DJs actually prepared their own playlists for their shifts.

WKRP was a brilliant show. I worked the late shift at a radio station located in a Hotel in my early twenties and the things that used to happen during live programs was unbelievable. When I first started we had these massive transcription turntables in one of the control rooms that had two foot by three foot metal doors under the turntables. I was told that that was where the tube electronics were and that it was best not to open the doors. For months I'd sit there and not open the doors as I cued the disks and loaded reel tapes for broadcast. One night after midnight I was a little bored so I decided to open the door ... inside I found a collection of glasses, liquor, and mixers. Under the other turntable was a collection of Cuban Cigars, various munchies, and alternate cigarettes (wink-wink). Soon after I was assigned to another studio and everywhere I looked there were little hidden compartments where management never looked but things that could ease your evenings were stored by the regular technicians that worked in the rooms. In one room someone had actually installed a mini-fridge at the base of the transmitter rack accessible only from the rear. The best thing about the station being in a Hotel was that I found you could order room service and have them deliver food directly to the control rooms since the kitchen was just down a long corridor. And since we technically worked in the Hotel we were given staff discounts. Once every few weeks I'd have a wonderful Steak Dinner delivered to where I was working in the studios and that was heaven. A few years later the studios were moved into a purpose built building and Hotel dinners ended. Late night studio shifts ended as well because all the programs were recorded during the daylight hours and playbacks were performed from a master control facility. The only secret stashes then were in producers offices and everyone used every studio depending on the show that was being recorded at what time. The shows that were recorded during the weekends could be interesting because that's when freelancers would come in to record their programs and some interesting things would be brought in for the shows. Music you otherwise wouldn't hear, food that you'd never heard of, and some very fine liquor that freelance announcers had access to depending on their nationality. And best of all ... no management in the building on the weekends. They were always 9-5 Monday to Friday. Automation and digital editing took a lot of teamwork and socialization out of radio. Now everyone that's hired is expected to do everything themselves. Even freelance announcers are expected to do their own technical operations via computers (no turntables, tapes, or CD players anymore). It's taken a lot of the joy and skill out of current radio production. I'm glad my career included the pre-transition days before the accountants and computer programmers took over. You worked hard but it was fun. R.I.P. Johnny Fever (Howard Hessman). When I grow up I want to be just like you (and I'm 67 now).

AM rock jocks in 1976 were chatty with the mad talk... As Doctor Johnny Feeeeeeevaaa was emulating on the pilot.
Early 70s FM were album players... Thus the niche for Progressive Rock groups 1967 to 1980. By 76 in many markets FM had become a jock talk, record spin situation.
The FM night after 8pm was usually still reserved for whole albums to smoke pot by (or imagine you were).

Nowadays a lot of smaller stations have gone to subscribed programming & "on air personalities" via satellite. That eliminates the need for program directors and a whole lot of other personnel that made radio more human back in the day.

Pink Floyd - Animals. Every time I heard a song off that album I went back to 1977 in my mind. Until May 2020. I had open heart surgery. I was waiting for my next shot of pain meds and hurting bad. I opened up youtube on Iphone and starting playing this album. Real low with headphones. It brought down my pain level till shot arrived. Now when I hear this album I go back to that hospital room. Not bad really as it is actually relaxing. At that point I didn't worry about bills, oil changes, driving in snowstorm. I just concentrated on music I loved.

When I was 8 years old, I actually had a WKRP record player. It came with a microphone so you could pretend you were a DJ. I did a radio show for three weeks before my mother told me that nobody can hear me and it was all make believe. I wish she would've told me that after the first week of my show. Because by then, I hated it. I had fun at first. But then it started to feel more like a job. I didn't want to just quit, but I was burnt out. It's not easy doing a five hour radio show every day when you only have 4 records, and one of them was the soundtrack to Neil Diamond's The Jazz Singer.

Back in 1978, Steely Dan produced a song called "FM" that totally captured the impact of the rise of FM radio over AM. "No static at all" was the hook, as it was with the technology. AM was subject to electrical disturbances like car engines and lightning, even if miles away. FM got rid of all that, and could deliver stereo as well.
I suspect WKRP was supposed to an be an AM station, but it's spirit is pure FM: playing long album sides as in this episode) and focusing on album-oriented playlists (the AOL) format. When I was in college in the mid-to-late 1970s, it was common for FM stations late at night to play entire albums like Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon", the joke being that allowed the DJ to hit the restroom or go out for a smoke.
    Them wuz the days.

    • @terrybeavan4264
      @terrybeavan4264 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

YUP! And FM isn't just a song by Steely Dan, it's the title track of the soundtrack for the movie FM, which I've often wondered is what inspired WKRP. Not a great movie but fun to watch if you're into this sort of thing, the soundtrack can be had on vinyl but the movie itself is hard to find but from time to time you can find a DVD on Amazon for sale at a painfully big price that I suspect is not legitimate but a well made and packaged bootleg. As some mentioned, I suspect it's not commonly available both because it just wasn't that popular but also featured a LOT of familiar songs including entire songs done live by Jimmy Buffet and Linda Ronstadt. Bit of trivia, this movie is the first one that used Queen's We Will Rock You. At least the movie trailer is here on youtube, and umm if you're of a certain age a lot of these actors will look familiar! th-cam.com/video/Acsa4s5n5Tg/w-d-xo.html Enjoy! :)

I definitely remember when radio stations played music like this and by choice. It was great. Back in the 70s and 80s, even the 90s. The time of real music that had meaning by people with talent. I'm not sure what went wrong with today's music or maybe I'm just getting old but... And this show is a classic. The characters were perfectly honed and played well. Again, we no longer see good TV like this either.

You have the Telecommunications Act of 1996 to thank for that. Previously, there were limits on how many radio stations a company could own, and not more than one in the same market. Clear Channel went from 40 stations to over 1,200 by 2002. Stations used to be locally owned, and have a pulse on the local music scene. They could experiment, and play what fans liked. Now there is one music director sitting in an office who decides what everybody listens to, and those decisions are made by whatever label pays the most for promotion.

      WHAT WENT WRONG !!!!!?
WALMART IS WHAT WENT WRONG !!!! Walmart ran a lot of small mom and pop places out of business. Well radio stations relied on local businesses for advertising. With out local advertising small radio stations got bought up by big media. Big media flooded the airwaves with syndicated radio shows. Now the radio stations don't even have DJs they're automated. Or they're broadcasting syndicated programs. WALMART IS THE F@#ING PROBLEM MAN !!!! and have you ever heard a radio spot for WALMART ???? NO !!!!!!

@@Shorty_Lickens You are incorrect. Our local contemporary (nowadays "classic legends" type) country music station DJs spun records during that era. I was in the studio at least once and saw them. Plus they talked about doing it. And the needles would jump a groove or get stuck sometimes.
And much more recently...perhaps ~8 years ago, I was driving through, I think, Knoxville, and there was a man and woman who were playing some old time music perhaps bluegrass or something along those lines, or southern gospel perhaps, and they were playing records.
I remember that they started getting fascinated by, and talking absentmindedly to each other about a fly that was buzzing around the studio and landing on things, and then landed on the record they were spinning, and just started riding around in circles. And they started commenting, sort of low key, on its trip around the turntable, and speculating on whether it was enjoying its trip, or was going to get off at some point. It was charming and unintentionally humorous. I loved it. I could have listened to those two play that record, and narrate the passenger flys perambulations across the surface of the record and simultaneous its trip around in a pointless circle for the next 20 minutes without getting bored. Unfortunately, it was over in what seemed like a minute or two.
I've traveled around a lot over the past ~30 years, and while I can't always tell, I have certainly heard quite a few DJs, particularly of lower power and rural stations spinning records.
