    This video explained it so much better than any of the other top videos. They all said "IF CONTINUITY, WORKS OK" but there could be more than one problem with a thermostat.

    • @Flashback502
      @Flashback502  ปีที่แล้ว

      In some cases yes, so if you still have same problem after testing, then I would replace to be sure. And Rule out thermostat as your problem.

    Dear Flashback,
    You are certainly a master instructor in the you tube classroom. I will follow your testing procedure, and hope to solve my problem. I installed two timers to no avail, and there is always a frost buildup on the evaporator. Another sign that you are a gift to all us students; you reply to all the comments. Thank you, and blessings from New Rochelle N.Y.

    Defrost thermostat turns on the defrost heater not the evaporator but very good video my friend

  • @randymarcell
    @randymarcell 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Thanks for the explanation. I think you meant evaporator heater instead of evaporator. When the the temp lowers because of frost and time, the thermostat closes and the heater next to the evaporator (coil) comes on. The evaporator heater melts the frost and ice. Then the thermostat warms up too and opens losing continuity and shuts off the heater. Right?

    This video helped so much. My thermostat was blown almost in half from the failure that it had. The part is around $25 - 30 ish with tax at the parts store. Ordering online is probably cheaper but trying to fix it immediately instead of waiting a day or two for the part to come in.

    OMG...thank you for being so damn thorough. I watched numerous videos and yours is, by far, the best. I clipped the wires, wrapped it around the multimeter, like in your video, and it beeped when I sprayed it with compressed air and the beep stopped at 54F (according to instructions about the numbers on the device). It was supposed to stop beeping at 59F, just a few off. It was truly a magical thing for me how it worked exactly like you said it would. Thank you.
    I check the compressor with the multimeter, and that works and I changed the old relay, after testing it. The refrigerator/freezer still won’t get down to the right temperature. What else could I try?

    • @Flashback502
      @Flashback502  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching you could have a problem with your compressor if it's not coming on then frezzer and fridge will be warm, if your fridge was unplugged for over a few hours it will take a day or so to get back to normal temperature. How it works out. Goodluck. Please subscribe & like and share if haven't already and check out our other helpful videos

    Good video, well explained but, I was searching for an answer originally to a question that nobody seems to have covered. Maybe it’s a stupid question but, I really don’t need you to replay since I figured this out myself. My question was ,” can you substitute a thermistor for defrost on the freezer evaporator with the bi-metal you are testing. I found that my 2 year old fridge thermister tested bad, and a bi-metal was 75% cheaper. I used the bimetallic and it worked fine and I am back in business

    This will be the next thing I check the next time my freezer coils ice over. We have a door seal on the fresh side that needs replaced (back ordered), but I'm not ever seeing the defrost cycle kick in anyway. Cleaned the exterior coils under the fridge last week (they were completely blocked) and made extra sure the doors were closing fine, but we still had problems. Its been more humid this summer, but no where near bad enough to overtake the defrost mode. Hoping its just the thermostat since I'd have to go deeper if it wasn't.

    Good video, but it may be misleading for other cases, as not all fridge defrost the same way. Mine has L140-30F on the thermostat, so at room temperature it has continuity all the time. It’s a GE side-by-side.

    Changed mine out this morning then decided to check the continuity on the old one I had continuity when it was room temperature indicating closed and on low side as well. as far as I know I have not had and overworking evaporator. if anything it has been under working because I have build up of frost and drinking water line dispenser freezes up. Now I just wait and see if it starts working properly. Your thoughts on closed Circuit at both ends of the temp range?

    I noticed water damage to the base molding by my fridge and water on the floor. When I opened the freezer I noticed some frost on the evaporator coil so I just changed the defrost thermostat today and will see if that solves it. When testing the old and new thermostats I couldn't get my multimeter to beep to test continuity on either one. I placed them in ice water for a few mins then tested the leads but no beeps. Even though the new one didn't beep I went ahead and installed it today. I'll check my coils again in a couple of days to see if I'm still getting frost on them.

    My defrost thermostat is stuck in the closed position. I heated it in hot water to see if it would open and it did not. Would the computer stop the defrost cycle anyway after a certain time? If it does this, would the computer then not go into defrost mode until reset? My fridge was totally frozen up and I thought the defrost thermostat would be stuck open?

    Hi, I'm having an issue whereby the freezer and refrigerator compartment is not cooling..I checked the electrical aspect of the compressor, fans and timer and its functioning as should. Before I jumped to the conclusion that the refrigerant has leaked out can you recommend what component should I check? Also, I notice that the suction line of the compressor isn't all that cold. The compressor is working as I mentioned earlier. Thanks

    GREAT INFO!
    Is this thermostat mounted inside the freezer itself (behind the panel where the evaporator fan is located)?
    Or...
    Is this the thermostat for adjusting the Frig temperature which will be located inside the regular part of the frig usually by the dials to adjust the coldness of the frig?
    My defroster does not want to turn off on an older Kenmore Frig. The defroster timer seems to be working as I can see movement inside the timer mechanism. Thanks.

    Thanks for the video. My defrost heater keeps burning out every 5 months or so. I think that it is staying on too long. If the defrost thermostat is not working correct will that cause the heater to burn out eventually? As I understand it, the defrost thermostat is sitting there....already closed when the defrost cycle starts. The defrost heater heats up. When temperature reaches certain temperature....the defrost thermostat opens....thereby stopping the heater. Once the temperature drops to a certain temp the defrost thermostat closes and is ready for next cycle. Is this your understanding?

    Hello Sir, My issue is I have water under my crisper in the refrigerator side. I checked my heat probe and its registering 96 ohms. so I think its working, I did your test on the Defrost Thermostat , I found when its open or closed its toning. so its faulty for sure. There is no fridge frost build up. so my heater must me on non stop. I checked the water drain at the back of the fridge and seem like the water is draining to the catch pan at the bottom of the fridge. so my question is, why is water pooling and running eventually out the fridge door. thank you. Samsung model RS277ACRS

      If fridge is getting cold then you could have a water line problem, if it's not getting cold then it could be your compressor going out.

    My Kenmore cold spot turns off and won't come on until I turn off thermostat and turn back on. Usually have to do it 3 or 4 times to get it back on.

    I got a question I replace the defrost heater, and the Defrost Thermostat was on there too. 1 week later the frig was 50+ replaced the Defrost timer. Frig was 35-40' now about 5-6 days later, the frig back up to 50'+ And they is frost on the Freezer, (0'-10' normal) All parts are GE. Could the defrost thermostat be bad? (NEW GE Parts)...I was thinking of using the old thermostat of the old unit. (Which one bottom heater burn out, 2 top/bottom, for this unit side by side 1997 models GE TFX25JRBBWW) Beep, at room temp, put in ice water no beep. Wait 1 hour to see if beeps again?

    Hi flash. I got nothing on mine - it`s in ice water. Nada - zero. My voltmeter has no Sound on continuity, but the display reads zero. If I put the meter on ohms - it reads 01.5. So it`s bad?

    Hi, Doesn't the defrost thermostat control the defrost heater which in turn melts the ice from the evaporator?

    Mine apparently works, because I've no issue with my refrigerator being 10 year's old getting to cold or not cold enough. My issue is, recently the water which is supposed to drain out, becomes frozen and cause's the defrost water to enter the refrigerator. I found a fix, wrapping a piece of solid copper wire around the heat tube and down into the drain hole. But I assuming it's only going to be a temp fix. What cause it to work, but apparently not sufficent enough to keep the defrosted water from draining.

    3:40 you say you may be able to cool the thermostat to below the close temperature of 14F. How is that possible if by definition the ice water is at 32F, which is too warm to force it to close?? I don't think the icewater trick will work here but it is good for checking a thermistor.

    Mine was doing it backwards .at room temp I was getting continuity, and my freezer was working fine but the fridge was getting hot and I had to unplug it cause it was so hot I was afraid it was going to be a fire....and then before the parts came in, we lost 200 bucks of food. My old fridge was over 40 years old and worked great and you just had to unplug it every3 months to defrost the freezer. But "we" had to have this dumb painless fridge that cost 3500 dollar GE toilet/fridge that we bought and rolled it into the mortgage, that has been a piece of shit from the first 2 years we had it. the water and ice stopped working and the tec charged us 6 hundred bucks and still couldn't fix it. and gave up and said we need to call GE. they gave us the run-a round too. now this problem ,so I said sure ,I'll try and fix it.... It's not like I don't have two broke down cars and 50 other things to do with my time , like finding a frigging job .. I'll just watch video after video learning about stupid refrigerators. And the only reason I'm doing this is the wife will be happy ......well, and I can keep my frigging beer cold !

    could some fridge makers design the heater circut to ground out existing current to turn heater on while others makers have a design tha just complete the circutt? or could the guy too lazy get off the couch walk 20' to get his model # just hop on ebay and order any thermostat? although if one was n/o and the n/c it would prob be labeled on package. just have a hard time wondering why the world cant agree on anything except the antarctica treaty and now way ur ice box operates

    "You shouldn't get nothing". A grammatically correct translation in the English language means that you should get something, because of the presenter's use of a double negative.
    Better to find a presenter who speaks correctly.
