    Awesome video. My wife and lifelong hunting partner and I recently purchased a freeze dryer and have been experimenting with making our own freeze dried food. So far it has been a great upgrade to the standard Mountain House or Peak Refuel, even had shrimp and fish meals on our elk hunt. Looking forward to part 2.

    You should try your 30-06 but with you vortex optic you have on your 6.5

    • @Longtrailside
      @Longtrailside 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He cant properly handle his 30-06 recoil. Samong stated this in an earlier video. He would rather use his 6.5 and be able to make a proper shot placement than have a heavier caliber, and be less accurate. It takes courage to admit to other hunters that you cant handle a larger caliber. Though it speakes to me he has accountability and good hunting ethics to me. I would rather have him be confident and accurate in a smaller caliber than out there wounding animals trying to wield a hard kicking rifle. Granted he just wounded the bear with his 6.5,,, but that was because he didn't check his line of path to the bear. Not because he used an inefficient caliber rifle.

    Pro tip for ya pal. Empty your freeze dried meals into food saver vacuum bags with labels on them to save pack space and back country garbage to pack out. Just take a ziploc Tupperware bowl with a lid Amit re-hydrate your meals in it. You can burn the food saver bags or pack them out but they’re much lighter than the commercial packaging of the freeze dried meals! 👊🏻

    That’s a sucky feeling, but happens to every hunter from time to time. With your optic focused on the target it can completely hide twigs and brush in the foreground. 170 yards through timber is no gimme shot. 170 yard shot in the timber is no easy shot. could've knicked a branch you didn"t see in the scope and could've deflected the bullet just enough to make a good shot bad. that said I always bring more gun than i need in case of this scenario. you make a bad shot with a heavier bullet going faster and your chances of recovery are much greater. Not enough gun if that is your Creedmoor with the 140 ballistic tips... looked liked you hit him well with the first shot. A 140 ballistic tip at 2650 out of the muzzle on a big bear at 180 yards is just not the right combination.

    • @andystampfli9127
      @andystampfli9127 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My grendel hits 2600fps... There's no way his muzzle velocity isn't 3000fps. I'm not saying it would be my pick but 6.5 creedmor is plenty of gun for a black bear. However I'd use a partition or a bonded lead bullet. If using copper idk what to use. I don't have any experience with the non lead bullets. I don't make many friends with my opinion on any ballistic tip hunting bullet so I'll just leave it at save your money, keep it simple and make better shots.
      That being said... Give him a break. He's trying and filming it all for us to see. He could have edited it out like the pursuit channel would have. Keep trying Samong.

    • @bneaclab1
      @bneaclab1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@andystampfli9127 The factory ammo he is using was outlined in a previous video and runs 2650. 6.5 Creed does not come anywhere close to 3000fps with 140s in any case. I agree with an accubond or a partition it is an ok choice though. I'm not coming down on Samong at all. I just hope it is a learning experience as in a previous video he indicates his accuracy with the Creedmoor overrides the power of his 30 06. I'm hoping he finds his bear, but we owe it to them to use enough gun. The 30 06 would most likely have dropped him. Just too many youtube vids espousing the creedmoor as a gun that it is not is all. I know they have killed elk and big bear, but they also 'don't' kill elk and big bear when a more appropriate caliber would have sometimes. When you throw up youtube videos you potentially influence new hunters, so imho it is important to discuss these things.

    • @SamongOutdoors
      @SamongOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I get that but unless you would rule out the .308 Win and 7mm-08 as incapable at that range as well, then the 6.5cm is fine. I don't think it was the cartridge because this set up has proven itself to me. Full pass through on a mule deer buck at 480 yards, full pass through on a bear at 315 yards, and a stuck on the opposite side on a cow elk at 525 yards.
      Cartridge certainly played a role but had more to do with my shot. My bullet hitting that stick before reaching the bear didn't help my cause.

    • @DrewEdwardBacklas
      @DrewEdwardBacklas 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m no 6.5 creedmoor fanboy, (I own .308 and 7mm-08 so it would be redundant for hunting) but this is not an issue of insufficient cartridge. With the shot deflecting after the twig hit there is no way of knowing where that bear was hit. You shoot a bear (or any animal really) through the guts with a 300win mag your just as likely to not recover him as with a .223.

    • @bneaclab1
      @bneaclab1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SamongOutdoors 308 and 7mm08 pack considerable (especially the 308) more punch than the 6.5 Creedmoor, so no I disagree with you there. In this case you know better than I so it was probably the twig and shot placement like you say. If you are shooting elk at 400 plus yards with a ballistic tip running 2650 though, you 'are' going to have problems though. Sorry but it just isn't enough energy and not the best bullet choice for consistent humane kills in that scenario. In fact I'll go farther and I know I'll ruffle a few feathers, but shooting a cow elk with that set up at 525 yards is just plain irresponsible.

    It would be interesting to know what state you're in. Nothing more detailed than that.

    • @willong1000
      @willong1000 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty sure that Samong mentioned it in the video, though I am not reviewing the entire episode again to confirm 😁. Anyway, the state is Washington (Nate confirmed in recent video of 2023 season's hunt in OR wherein he mentions that previous two high buck hunts occurred in WA).
      Paraphrasing the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) regulations--you can go to their website for more details such as the specific Game Management Unit boundary descriptions--the "High Buck Hunts" seasons occur in wilderness areas of "Alpine Lakes, Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Pasayten, Olympic Peninsula, Henry Jackson Wilderness Areas and Lake Chelan Recreation Area."
      The Cascades are relatively young mountains and a lot of the country looks similar to the video's across the eastern slope of the range. Fire scarring, which can make an area appear more arid than it actually, can leave even some of the more western portions looking similar for years. If I had three guesses, I'd venture Pasayten Wilderness, Lake Chelan (north of) and "Let's spin the wheel Vanna."

    This is a top quality production, I've been there trying to find an animal I've hit. It happens. Worst feeling ever, high to low in a split second. I appreciate you showing the hunt for how it is. The emotion that goes into it. Love the videos. Are you going to try and do some waterfowl this year?

    Great content. I know this question gets asked a lot but wanted to get your take. If you did this same hunt solo, and didn't have all the camera gear lol: Would you take small-medium bino's (8's or 10's) & a spotter also. Or just med-large Binos (12's or 15's) only? Maybe something different, but these seem like to two common choices.

    Also to a friend, sighted his scope kinda funny, I seen him clearly miss at about 130yrd ha ha only shot one round. He said I seen my bullet missing by like six feet. He said see anything wrong with My scope handed it to me. I took a look and he accidently made the cross hair's at a ever so slight X bearly notice. And that few days before when he sight his in I checked mine. But he re- adjusted the scope to refit to eye. And didn't recheck again. To see if The scope was zero'd or not. But The next morning just as he climbed outta his tent he got his dear about 40ft from the tent. I was still sleeping. I woke to the boom of his 08 Back strap's For lunch. I not as fortunate that was one of my last deer hunts. With a rifle. I liked muzzle loader hunting. Way more of a hunt by far.

But i heard you two say that you both were out of ammo or didnt have any on you. i hope you meant you didnt have anymore in ur mag but some in your bag. you two out there doing some dangerous hunting. be safe and carry enough ammo or at least a side arm especially if that bear ran into you guys. stay safe fam.
