One of those songs that evokes such strong emotions and memories. Beautiful lyric from Marilyn and Alan Bergman, melody and genius arrangement by Marvin Hamlish
I can still remember as a very young child being in the movie theater and hearing Barbra humming the iconic intro to TWWW. I didn't understand the movie until years later, but the haunting soundtrack has stuck with me for 48 yrs. TWWW not winning the Oscar is unimaginable.
Just discovered that this was the third Oscar that Marvin Hamlisch won that night, one for "The Sting" and two for "The Way We Were". How positively beautiful! ♡ It also explains the audience's reaction. Back when ppl were genuinely happy for each other. Lovely video
Shame on all these negative comments on Ms Margret's appearance. This was the first time she had made a public appearance since a near fatal platform plunge in 1973. From a newspaper article: Ann‐Margret suffered several facial fractures, a concussion, a broken jaw and a broken arm Sunday when she fell from a 22‐foot‐high platform just before her performance at a Lake Tahoe casino. An FYI folks!
I know. In an era (today) where most people think flip flops and leggings are fashion, they really don’t have a millimeter to complain. Personally I think Ann Margaret looks absolutely freakin gorgeous here. She’s so beautiful I’m turned on, and I’m gay!
I got to meet her when I shot for ASCAP. Didn't know who she was but she had this quiet, deep and kind persona about her. And that left an impression on me, then I learned she wrote most of the songs I had listened to, which blew me away.
Such a well deserving Oscar Award win for Mrs Marilyn B i am almost certain she was the lyricist on this song oh my god its so beautifully written and the way Barbara sang make me emotionally teary eyed
Marvin had a big night. Not only because he won but because he was given the award by two great musical titans in their own right: Burt Bacharach & Henry Mancini.
Post WWII, the 1970's was probably the first generation with the actual leisure to have nostalgia for an older time (before that everyone was just working and constantly disappointed!), hence Ann Margaret's 1930's Busby Berkley outfit, in 1974!
MY ERA GROWING UP 50's & 60's - LATER IN THE HOLLYWOOD MPI - I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF WORKING WITH "BURT" & "BARBARA" & "MARVIN HAMLISCH" TOO & YES "DIONE WARWICK" TOO! (RECORDS & MOVIE SCORING)THANK YOU LORD !
Marvin and A-M were really good, close friends. She was ecstatic! (And is apparently wearing Wonder Woman's costume for gala occasions. Remember the motorcycle one, the underwater one and the skateboarding - ! - ones?!)
The headdress to me shows off how beautiful Ann Margaret is. Sexy hair can hide a less beautiful face. But this outfit focuses on the face alone so it has to be beautiful to carry it off ❤
Where's the rest of Ann's scuba gear? Was she on her way to a late night taping of Sea Hunt with Lloyd Bridges? Any bets that Burt came on to her after the show? (if not before or during).
Freeze at 2:40 ... the woman is a dead ringer for Barbra, but that's not Barbra's mouth or teeth. Also, Streisand is not one to be so manic and jumping all around over an award (especially for someone else). But that chick is definitely playing the Katie Morosky look for all its worth.
Yep. Marvin and Liza were friends going back to the early 1960s (According to wikipedia, he wrote four songs for her, at least one of which was released on her first album). Being friends with Liza, he would undoubtedly also know Lorna.
@@skipeastport5529 amazing isn't it - so many people remember the song as "Memories." Even with one word, Barbra makes it a classic. I miss those days...

This song beat out the song "Love" from the Disney movie Robin Hood. In my honest opinion, The Way We Were is a very good song. Though it is not as half poetic, or moving, nor does it sound as good as Love from the Disney cartoon. I believe even though "Love" is clearly the superior song, the academy could not award the Oscar to a song that that was in the cartoon, since it would be an embarrassment for the song from a cartoon movie to win over a song from an adult movie.
Que naturalidad en las reaciones, en la forma de aplaudir de Liza y su acompañante....muy lejos de la encorsatada y controlada ceremonia de los Oscar que es hoy en dia.
He didn't come to the ceremony to accept the award, so really the only good thing about posting that clip is seeing Madonna (and Michael Jackson) applauding in the audience.
I know I’m coming to this late, but Paul McCartney has said that Linda wrote the reggae sounding bridge: “What does it matter to ya? When you got a job to do you gotta do it well. You gotta give the other fella hell.”

@@helenaville5939 WHAT??!! You're kidding, right? It would be the exact opposite of that! Live And Let Die is MUCH better known than the other song. Not only in America but internationally. I'm from Portugal and I've never heard the other song but I most definitely know Live And Let Die.
“Live and Let Die” was covered by Guns N’ Roses in 1991 where it went to no. 1 in the U.K. I hear “Live and Let Die” on classic rock/pop radio (both the McCartney and Guns N’ Roses versions). I never hear “The Way We Were.” While it’s a lovely song with evocative lyrics, “The Way We Were” is a classic to some and a bit old fashioned to others, harkening back to an earlier era of poetic balladry. “Live and Let Die” was the future, pushing popular music forward with its almost anti-melodic core and its unromantic lyrics. I would say “Live and Let Die” has stood the test of time better.
Of course, Streisand made this beautiful song a classic. One of the most beautiful songs ever written and performed.
Classy people, classy music. Life was simpler and relaxing back then.

I can't NOT tear up whenever I hear this beautiful song. Great song writing is everything ❤
Marvin Hamlisch won 3 Oscars on this same night. He also won for both score categories (original and adapted) for The Way We Were and The Sting.
