Hi Anthony, many thanks for the very clear and useful information. As you indicated, the Medical Board says on its website "This pathway does not lead to registration as a specialist in Australia". But where exactly does the board stipulates that the experience accumulated during that time will not be taken into account when evalutating the candidates experience for a anther pathway (for example Specialist Pathway)? I coudn't find that info anywhere.
This is old information that no longer appears on the Medical Board website. The colleges do now take this experience into account.

"eligible for registration" in the Selection Criteria.
Titles like Trainee, Registrar, Advanced Trainee, Fellow are ones to look for.

Yes. That is what the pathway is intended for.

I have actually never come across a situation of IMGs applying for Short Term Training in Australia. And there is no information about it on the RACGP website.
Hi Dr. Anthony. I would like to apply for STT in cardiac electrophysicist. Mainly I would like to top up my skill in more complex procedure. I went through hospital websites and could not find any job opening related to STT. Or normally they do not advertise for the position? Should I contact the department directly?
You are confusing a registration pathway with a job posting. The hospitals are not going to specifically write Short Term Training Pathway in their job postings (or most will not). You should be looking for jobs that are title: Advanced Trainee, Fellow, Senior Reqgistrar.

Well there's lots of costs to consider. Including the cost of your own time. If we are talking just fees. Then the Colleges usually charge a few hundred dollars to process your application and you will be up for a few hundred more to verify with the AMC and get registered. So $1,500 to $2,000 AUD as a rough estimate.

I plan on getting fellowship training in Australia and take the SST pathway. I would like to know if getting into anesthesia fellowship programs is competitive in Australia. What are my chances of getting accepted as an IMG?
Its reasonably competitive. Its mainly about timing and having a good application process.
Hi prof anthony, i got hired thru this pathway -short term specialist pathway. What are my chances of being able to work long term after finishing this pathway? Are the options( other pathways) not so complicated?
The pathway is limited to 2 years. Extensions are rare. The other pathways are relatively more complex.

It’s a pathway. It depends on what job you end up getting through it. They are not linked. But something around $100-150k AUD per annum.

Hi you have to obtain a position prior to applying to the college. Look for advanced training type posts.

I'm not sure to really understand the difference between Registrar, Senior registrar and Fellow. Could you help me ? Thanks !
They are just different grades of seniority as a specialist trainee. Registrar is the starting level. Senior Registrars are usually in their last year of training. Fellows are usually doing some additional training prior to working as a consultant.

You won't have enough time to apply for the specialist pathway. Short Term Training is the best pathway and likely the one the service is wanting you to apply for.

All registration paths require evidence of English proficiency. Its not about the path. Its about the country you are from.
So , would I get the training in my speciality ?
And what if I need to train in a subspecialty ( for example , spine surgery as a subspecialty of orthopedics ) is it available ?
I'm not sure I understand your question. This program is available for you to specifically and directly apply for jobs that fit your specialty interest or need. Availability of subspecialty posts will depend on how competitive these posts are.

Very competitive. You will need good networks.

Technically you are not supposed to be using the short term pathway to do the other pathways. But many do. I’m not aware of any situation or reason why you would go from standard to short term.

The RANZCOG are more difficult with their assessments than other colleges. According to their website you really need a minimum of 5 years training with an equivalent program to the RANZCOG program.

Will college consider short term pathway experience to access the cadidate as fully comparable ? As my partner has no specialist experience after 3 years MD.
Wether need to give AMC exam
Or she can appear for RCPA fellow exam directly.
They may take this experience into account. It’s not going to substitute for no consultant experience though.

You already said that it won’t count as experience, but would it count as part of my formation as an orthopaedist?
Do you mean for the training program you are doing outside of Australia?
Career Doctor No, I mean as a credential for applying for the specialist pathway. Or do they just take in consideration the training program I had back home (residency, knee arthroscopy fellowship and trauma fellowship)??
@@nicolasvittone3586 officially the Short Term Training here does not count as time or formal experience. However, it remains valuable as it is hard to not acknowledge a good reference from a local Fellow whom you are working for and the fact that a hospital here has chosen to hire you means something as well.

Ummm. You would have to come here to work under SST. So yes you would have to immigrate. This pathway does not provide an option for permanent migration.

It is always theoretically possible. It depends on your specialty and a 2 years gap is reasonably significant.

I’m a senior ophthalmology resident (final year in my residency) from the middle east.. I’m interested in doing a fellowship/ subspeciality within ophthalmology in Australia (it’s called comprehensive ophthalmology).. usually ophthalmology specialists and senior residents go and do a fellowship abroad and they get paid by our hospital in our country even during the period when they’re doing a fellowship abroad.. and then finish the two years and get back and work in the same hospital as before.. so im not clear on why i need to get a job post first?!
Because you still need a job in order to be registered here.

Yes. You can work towards one of the other pathways whilst on short term training (although this is not the intention of the program).

I don’t understand your question sorry. Fellowship jobs are not formal fellowships in Australia ie they don’t lead to FRACP or similar. They are usually down for extra experience prior to becoming a consultant.
