      Well I generally measure everything in thousands. One one thousandth of an inch is 1/40 of a millimeter. That's the Precision I work too

      I work in an industry where we mix imperial units and metric units on the same project. So, mixing fractions with metric units is perfectly understandable.

    Just want to thank you sir. I do a little guitar repair but am nowhere near your level. I've learned much from watching you work but I think more importantly, you've motivated me to try harder and do better. You never seem to settle for it'll do or it'll work. You aim for perfect or as near perfect that can reasonably expected as your customer's budget will allow. Am I correct in assuming many hours of shop time never gets billed because your desire to do the best is greater than the customers bank account? May your God bless you and those you love.

    This guitar is coming along nicely. Those extra little bits of white that show at each end of the arm rest could have been cut out and replaced with a bit of glue mixed with the sawdust created when you made the cuts for the binding. I don't know if it would have been worth the extra work. Those small white bits aren't all that noticable.

    Thanks for putting the millimetre sizes in your videos, like many of your viewers not from the USA I struggle to understand measurements described inches and thousandths of inches. The inclusion of the metric system for your videos is very helpful and considerate.

    Needed to pause for a moment, so I won't forget to tell you this. First of all, this is already incredibly beautiful and well done! Oh man! You are a genius!
    But my main concern here is to thank you. THANK YOU that you "translate" the inches-thing to me, being from millimeter land. :D That inches stuff is totally confusing me. Really... why do you rather say "a thirdysecond of an inch" instead of (I don't know)... "one point two millimeters"? :D This seems so intricate to me. ;)
    Okay, I keep on watching know. My evening is saved. Thank you! :D

    • @rustyaxelrod
      @rustyaxelrod 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      While I can’t speak for Jerry, I’d say it’s just being taught a certain way in school and what you get used to. There are really three or four different things going on though. The first is where you start at 1. An inch being about the width of your thumb is a much different beginning reference than a millimeter, maybe the width of a wood pencil. So the anchor point, 1, is much different right off the bat. The second thing relates to multiples, as you go up (and down) a full value it makes a different amount of “difference”. So the scale of the numbers like 6in vs 6mm don’t correspond very well. 6in is so much more than 6mm they seem like completely different things and that changes the value of 6. It’s easy if you’re used to it but it makes switching from one to the other harder. 3rd is more our problem with the “English” system but in school, fractions were a major part of learning math. The idea of 3/32nds isn’t foreign, or an inch and 7/8 isn’t confusing at all but no one says “it’s 1 3/4mm. It’s 1.75mm. Fair enough, the decimal system works well and we do use it and really it is better (in my opinion), when speaking about thousands of an inch we are simply anchoring the value three decimal places to the right, but still using that thumbs width as our 1. And finally, after all that work in school passing those tests, we just kept using it and being American means we really don’t mind being different even if it’s not better.
      I have tried to convert myself and found it difficult to go completely metric, traveling 10kilometers at 50kph still hasn’t gotten into my mind. The decimal system on the other hand was an easy conversion but when I roll out a tape measure, I still look at the inches. It’s just hard to teach an old dog new tricks 😉.
