Myself, I use both cheap pencils and the more expensive pencil sets, I know you get what you pay for, but the joy of coloring is there wether you use the expensive or cheap. Now if your coloring professional, then you may want to spend a little more just because some pencil colors fade in time, but isn’t coloring a hobby? One that you enjoy and more important , that you can afford, just because you spend more on the supplies, doesn’t mean your going to color like a artist the very first time you do pick up a pencil. Pick the pencil brand name that you feel comfortable using and then and maybe then, try the next more expensive brand, but don’t throw out the cheaper pencils, cause to me, they work just as well, just a different color. Hope this helps you when choosing your pencil sets…❤❤❤ happy coloring 2 U all!!!

I just purchased these and try them out myself. And as someone who was totally into Prismacolor my whole life, they definitely are some up sites to the Amazon basics especially for coloring. I like how they are transparent rather than opaque like the prismacolors. Because I’m someone who ends up for a drawing the black lines whenever I use a Prismacolors. So I definitely agree in US dollars they are about 20 and that’s totally worth it for the 72. I hope they come out with at least 120, that would be really great.

I hope they come out with a larger set, too, without raising the price for more pencils too high for me.

Brilliant test Claire, please do more!! I'd left the amazon basics in my basket! Just couldn't hit buy, I was so sure it was Prisma on the left and they're my absolute favourite pencils, to the point I'd be happy to not have 90% of the other brands on my shelves, so couldn't buy more until you released this video!! You did a smashing job on the butterfly too 👏👏 thanks! X

I kinda hate to admit it, but, I was pretty impressed with the Amazon colored pencils. For the price & coloring quality, they are totally worth it. Thx for doing this compare/contrast video, Claire ❤💛💙

When adult colouring, the most important thing for me is how sharp my tip is. When i sharpen a Luminance i feel like it's my pinky finger being butchered in the Dahle 133, not fun, not relaxing. That's why i tend to use Deli or Square Brutfuner, because for the price i paid for them, i shove them in the sharpener withou a second thought. Yet they're still pigmented and blendable enough for me to make colouring i'm happy with. Thank you for higlighting another suitable option for my fun stress free colouring. ❤

Prisma were the first quality set i bought when i started coloring ‘ again after the days of my youth ‘ i have many, many sets of brands now. I got prisma due to using them back in the day they were berol. I have since acquired the amazon basics, lyra and blick studio ( us based retailer ) and they are all very good pencils for the price point. Amazon basics are the least expensive of the 3 and i was just blown away by how good they preform. Thank you for the video and the time you put into it!

Thank you so much for the video. I absolutely hate Prismacolor for all of their terrible QA issues. I cannot believe how nice the Amazon Basics look. I never would have even considered purchasing Amazon Basics pencils, but after seeing your posts and this video, I am definitely going to pick up a set! Thank you. ❤

Thank you so incredibly much for the review and demonstration- both sides really looked stunning. Slightly different but both really beautiful ( think I may have liked the Amazon ones better!? Idk! Lol). What I think is so important is that you really showed how stunning colouring can be achieved with less expensive pencils !! Hopefully people won’t feel like they ‘ need’ the more expensive option when you really can create gorgeous work with these ( although, you are an incredible colourist and would make the cheapest pencils look incredible! 😁).
Your review tho- what you said about them etc, really wonderful & so helpful for so many people I’m sure! I wasnt exactly looking at purchasing them & don’t think they are available in Australia but was still interested to see the results!! Thank you!

The one thing I noticed that was (ever so slightly) different was that some areas on the left looked to be more pigmented, which was why I guessed the Prismas were on the left. I guess I didn't look closely enough to notice the muted lines caused by the wax buildup, but now that you've pointed it out and I've had a closer look, I can definitely see it. That's enough evidence for me to show that Amazon Basics are "good enough". Thanks for this awesome comparison. Your butterfly is really gorgeous, by the way!

I hear a lot of people talk about 'starter' pencils but the way the UK is currently, not all people who want cheaper pencils are new to colouring. I have several more expensive sets that I simply can't afford to replace any more, so I'm always on the lookout for cheap pencils that do a good job! I'm definitely going to give these a try, so thank you for the review.

I must admit that I was completely fooled. Probably because I like uniformity, and the Prismas covered some lines, but not others. I actually was taken in by the fact that all lines showed equally on the Amazon side which looked better to me than some lines clear and others not. Don't know what the price is here in the USA, or how the Amazon colors will look and perform here. Thanks for the review. I have to look at budget pencils, and this assured me that I wasn't condemned to having my coloring look budget, too.

For me, the opacity is a feature :-) I like to use black paper and / or go over top of watercolours, and the more transparent pencils don't work as well.

That has blown me away, I guessed wrong. I am always looking for cheaper pencils for when my granddaughters come as I don't want them using my expensive ones, these will be perfect for them too use with the brutfuner, castle arts, castle arts gold, derwent, arteza and not forgetting the crayola...I do have other cheaper brands but can't remember which ones I have 😅

  • @nicolemarie011

My gut instinct was that the left was Prisma, and yes, at first glance I would have never guessed two separate pencils brands were used. I have been on the fence about these for some time. For some reason they look slightly similar to the Blick colored pencils and I did not like them. I actually sent them back which I never do. They had way too much filler in them, they were crumbly, and extremely waxy, almost like a crayon. Maybe I will grab a small set of these to try. I do trust your opinion and your coloring looks beautiful with them. Thank you for the demo!

To my eyes some parts of the right side seem a little bit brighter with the exception of The parts that have that greenish teal blend. The prisms side is brighter in that section.
I’ve been hoping for years now that Amazon basics expand to 120 count.

    • @DieterPrivate

The right side does look "brighter", but also more "flat". Left side is more richer in colour.

I just ordered a set of those markers from Temu. I bought some lovely diamond paintings, storage boxes, diamond painting tools, a light box A3 size, an A3 10 page clear plastic folder, a pencil case, a new duvet set, a shower curtain, a very soft throw, fingerless gloves, a winter hat, and a wall thingy. Not all at once but over time. So far they have managed to ship to New Zealand fairly quickly and I was kept updated on their delivery time. The only disappointment was a the light pen for diamond painting the plastic bit at the tip was broken and there wasn't a power cord provided for the light box. I was lucky I already had a charging cable from an old phone that fit perfectly. As for the light pen it didn't cost that much at the time anyway, but overall I like what I purchased.

I went back and forth with the image -- there were a couple things that had me leaning toward the Prisma side as Prisma -- but I was still undecided and it came down to nitpicking the blending and gradient -- and that was nitpicking.

I was finally going to buy these, but apparently there are many people in our community who believe Amazon has recently(?) changed their formulation for the worse, and these once decent pencils are now...bad. Less pigmentation, weird lay-down, etc... I cannot say, as I've never owned an older set. Would it be worth a video to buy yourself a brand-shiny-new set and test it against the set you that already have? (assuming that you still have this set). I'm so curious to know if they've really changed, and I've always valued your opinion on such things. Another half-and-half coloring---Amazon versus Amazon---might be awesome. Thanks, Claire!

I was going to name the youtuber's channel where I first heard about this...conspiracy?, but I didn't want to bias your results (but of course I'll tell you if you really want to know). She really did quite a deep dive looking into it---she was really more curious than anything. Apparently, many of her followers asked her to look into it because the changes were so noticeable. But the one thing she did NOT do was test an old set against a new set?! Don't know why. We need to get to the bottom of this mystery, Claire! lol. Thanks again!☺
