Weekly Vlog # 15 cooking for our community (again)

- Its been 11 weeks which means its mine and my partners turn to head back to the kitchen and cook for our community. While we were busy in the kitchen the women were busy all week with garden work. this week a couple of things were ready to pick which ended up being a hectic week but, all in all it was a productive week for everyone.

Hi Giselle! Do you make up a plate of food for each person or do they help themselves? Are second helpings available? When I'm out shopping may I engage the ladies I run into from local communities in conversation? I live in South Dakota and we have several communities nearby. Also, I watched your vlog where you showed the blouses you had made. Your sewing is perfection and the special touches you added to the sleeves was amazing! The pictures of your home community looks so much like one I've visited near my home - is there a standard design used when building? Thanks for your feedback; sorry, I have a million questions!
Have been binge-watching your videos while I work from home. I think you are just darling and I love the insight into your colony! I live in Montana and there are several Hutterite colonies in my area. We purchase fresh veggies and baked goods from them every Thursday! I would LOVE it if you could share the fish taco recipe! Thank you for all that you do and keep up the great videos!
I’m just curious how the food gets served. Do you Platte things up for people and everyone gets the same amount or do they get to decide they want of each thing. How do you know if there’s enough for everyone? Like if a man is really hungry and wants 5 tacos but you only make enough for everyone to eat two

so im confused. do you guys shop for every home plus the kitchen.i see you making stuff at home but thought you guys ate all together. so yeah im really confused .thank you for shaeing your lives with us
the eating at home is more of a snack break. although during the months we were in lockdown we had to eat at home we were not allowed to in the kitchen. the food we have at home is stuff that we are free to take from the kitchen if we happen to need it. and if we want to make a dessert at home we can do so as long as it doesn't call for ingredients that are on the pricy side. I hope that answered it for you.

Giselle, lol, the potatoes!! Cannot get away from the potatoes!! You're not alone lol! Next time I'm peeling potatoes I will think of you! 🌻💛 potatoes were a side (just about) every single night when I was a child! I wonder how many of us are peeling them at the same time lol. All the food looks delicious, especially the fish tacos! Yum!

thank you :) we steam our bagels as its similar to boiling them and boiling a big batch like that would take awhile.
Are you allowed to leave campus to do shopping or to the public library?
Does the whole community have daily meals together instead of in individual homes?
yup, there is also a seal break that we eat at home and sometimes we have family supper when we eat at home.
What variety of peas do you use? What do you fertilize the soil with? Do you make your own compost? Haven't been having much luck with our gardens peas in recent years.... Although I like eating the pea shell,maybe the ones we get are to hybridized and finicky. They usually croak as soon as the weather's hot enough and the ground's thawed for most gardening.

And, #2, the snow storm you had on February 2nd moved here to Western New York State where we live on February 3rd and 4th. It combined with something we have here LES, which stands for Lake Effect Snow, off of Lake Erie. It was a challenge! But beautiful blue skies now with a clean few feet of snow, beautifully coating the trees. Enjoy your week and thank you!
Wow !!!!! I was absolutely drooling and dribble Ling when I saw those Bagels. I am sure I put on a few extra kilos just looking at them 😂😂😂😂
My grandma had a garden. When I was little, I often helped her harvesting the pies and nibbled them. They were so tasty and a whole lot different then the pies you can buy at the supermarket. Kind of sweet and so delicious jam jam. She grew a lot of veggies and fruits there. I remember apples, plums, strawberries, currants, gooseberries, rhubarb, carrots, zuchini, pies, string beans, salad, gherkins, potatoes, tomatoes, dill, chives, onions, radishes, parsley and I think spinach too. It was so much, no one in my family ever had to buy any veggies or fruits except of potatoes. We germans love potatoes and eat them really a lot. And Grandma had a lot of flowers. She had a really strong faith in God and went to church every sunday, later even every day. With the flowers from the garden she decorated the altar of the three churches she went to. Seeing you in those videos sewing or harvesting in the garden, it really reminded me of my own childhood being with granny and my cousins or friends in the garden. Unfortunately my grandma had give up her garden later because the landlord wanted to build houses on the ground. I really loved my granny, I know she is now happy, sittig on a white cloud and being with God and Jesus in heaven. Grandma I love you so much!

Just curious. I've seen you eat chicken, pork and fish. Do you eat beef? Also do you raise your own meat, eggs and milk?
Yeah we have beef. Unfortunately we don't do that almost all colonies do but, as of now we don't have a setup for something like that.

All of your kitchen portions of your blog are inspiring me to cook more. Yes I am not by any means a trained chef but my mother let me cook fried potatoes the very first time I believe I was eight years old. 🙂
I'm not a trained chef either I just learn and pick up tips and tricks as I go, I have been cooking for 6 years now and I'm still learning I just love it so :)
How come yall dont have chickens easily could provide all those eggs with the land you have

So much deliciously looking food...sure yummy... but my stomach is already kaputt :( coz I don't know much about cooking so I usually eat some old junk...
my advice start with making easy stuff watch videos on how to do it (its also a lot of the times easier then it looks) cause a kaput stomach is no fun and not a good thing.

Actually no.....i make sure I'm early for work so that I can film a bit and then sometimes I take out my phone and take a couple second clips others also take pictures so as long as you don't spend too much time on your phone and do your work its ok 😊

How many dogs do you have and are the dogs everybody's dogs or only your dogs? I noticed the German Shepherd going with you on the bicycle. Dogs like to run. Years ago I had a German Shepherd/Collie cross.
One time I was walking with her and some people came and wanted to give me a ride and they said the dog could run behind. But I told them that I'd walk and that I didn't want the dog to run behind because she'd get sore paws and then she wouldn't be able to walk for 3 days.
Do you guys buy dog food for your dogs or do you just feed them scraps?
Some dogs will eat anything and others are more fussy. I used to have a dog named Elisabeth. She would eat stubs of raw carrots (not the whole carrot, just the stub), apple cores, raw potato peels, also clay, sand, and dirt.
The dogs I have now will only eat potato peels if they are cooked. When I peeled potatoes, I used to let the peels go on the floor and the other dogs I had would eat them all. But they only would eat them inside, not outside. The dogs I have now would probably would only eat carrots if they are cooked.
we have two there small breed dogs (not really sure what kind as they are mixed breeds). no the dog only belongs to you yes mine will sometimes go for walks with other people but, she knows who she belongs to. our dogs eat anything they are not fussy, people like to feed them raw veggies like carrots for treats and they just love them.
@@gisellewaldner9406 Brutus and Amber mainly only eat dog food and any meat scraps and bones I give them. Sometimes they catch mice. Amber eats mice. I'm not sure if Brutus eats mice but he likes to catch them. One time years ago after Amber had caught a mouse, I said to her, "You're better than a cat." She knows the word "cat" so I have to be careful sometimes not to say "cat". The reason the people who had her before gave her away was because she is not good with cats. It was a farm and I guess they needed the cats to get the mice. The woman who brought her said, "We have only four cats" like that was a tragedy. She will be 9 in May. I've had her since she was one year old. She is not spayed but nothing can get in here. Brutus is fixed. She was in heat the past few days. I think she's getting back to normal now.

@@gisellewaldner9406 All day yesterday and previous days,Amber and Brutus were playing and acting like they were both very happy, but today he was sleeping and laying around. Same with Amber. She won't have any puppies because Brutus is fixed. When I was looking for a dog, I insisted that if it was a male dog, it had to be fixed. For a female, it doesn't matter for me, because I have it fenced good here. I fenced it in about 2001. Then I had to make another fence in 2007 because of my next door neighbor's big chocolate lab forever running to my fence, making trouble for me with my dogs. What I still can't understand is that I did all that myself and men are supposed to be better at things like making fences than women. I hauled all the posts and wire in my station wagon. In fact, I was loading too much weight in my car in 2007 and the rear springs broke so I had to get it fixed. When I went to pick up my car, the guy there said to me, "Stop hauling cement in that!" Then he asked me what I was hauling. When I replied, "Fence posts" he asked, "What do you need fence posts for?" I replied, "To make a fence." Then he said, "Why do you need a fence?" I said "To keep the neighbor's dog out." Then he said, "Don't' make a fence. Shoot him."
I had to make another fence in 2007 farther away from my first fence so I wouldn't have my dogs fighting along the first fence with the neighbor's dog.
There is a road allowance in between. In about 2003 an oil company had the road allowance surveyed because it was part of their access road. In 2001 when I made the first fence, I put it where I thought it would be inside the boundary line. It is all bush there. The people next door are rich and 20 years younger than I am. I am 65 now. I made the first fence when I was in my 40's and the second fence when I was in my 50's. Now I am 65, but I'm not going to make any more fences. I am tired of making fences. I still don't know what their problem is about making their own fence. It's not rocket science. I dug out every hole myself with a garden trowel and mixed the cement in a wheelbarrow for some of the posts and a plastic basin for some of them. It was something like mixing cake dough but you don't eat it.
Amber and Brutus slept most of the day today. I think they are tired from all that the past few days and she's back to normal, I hope.

No but, they do get thrown with the rest of the compost which gets put on the field and worked into the ground where we plant crops.

@@gisellewaldner9406 Since I watch your videos I have to think a lot about my life. It's difficult to say it in eglish cause that's not my native language, but I'll try to. I live in a big city and I spend a lot of time with things like playing video games or watching tv with my notebook. And for me it's so inspiring to see you enjoying being in the nature or being in good mood by such things like cleaning or doing things like even icetea or lemonade on your own. (I buy them at the supermarket because it would annoy me to do it on my own) When I watch your videos I feel that I want to change my attitude and some of my actions. For example instead seeing things like cleaning as something annoying seeing it from a positive point of view like: When I do it, everything is clean again and everything smells so good. (I do clean of course but I hate it exept of washing the dishes. That's someting I really like) And since I watch your videos I cook more instead of eating canned food =)

@@loadhogs479 Am in NO way trying to be critical or condemning here, but am curious what is meant by being "super authentic"? I think Giselle does reasonably well at being as real and transparent as can be expected. - I am very satisfied at her selection of background music and of course she will NEVER please everyone. . . 'feel good' mood music is good, but work sweating and living is a reality, cleaning floors and weeding gardens does not always put everyone in a symphony mood! I only wish I was as gifted in producing videos as she does! Blessings and peace. . .
