As someone who sweats fairly heavily, a completely waterproof jacket is a guarantee that I'm going to be soaked from the inside. I've had little success with breathable jackets even at moderate efforts. I don't focus on staying dry but rather on staying warm. I use jackets more for wind proofing, to minimize the cooling effect. I use various weight Merino wool tops to keep my core warm even when I get wet, and especially Merino wool socks to keep my feet warm, because as Coach Morgan said, it's inevitable they get wet. (Wear the shoes with the best wet grip as well - not all soles have the same traction when wet). My goal is to avoid hypothermia, in the rain or in the snow.
There are waterproof socks for runners that work really well. Merino wool socks dry much faster and help a lot. Trail (or hybrid) shoes drain more quickly and have better grip. If you know you are doing long runs in the rain prepare your feet with Vaseline or other stuff as wet feet rub more. Gortex shoes are good if you don’t submerge your feet. You can use gaiters to stop rain getting in your shoes but again, not if submerged. Rain jackets have different levels of waterproofing and breathability so need to check carefully. Some rain jackets expand at the back so they can go over a pack which helps as well.
If it's warm enough, which varies by person, just embrace getting soaked to the bone; it's not going to kill you. But below about 45F & raining, I usually put on a light rain/wind jacket shell, hat, and waterproof socks. Speaking of which... Showers Pass makes the best breathable WP sock, which I find better than SealSkinz. It's also wool-lined, so if water does seep in from above it'll still feel warm-ish and won't stink as much later. Kind of expensive at ~$50, but cheaper than having two kinds of shoes.
I second embracing the wet! I find that the one thing I can't do without in the rain is a visor to keep the rain out of my eyes, and waterproof gloves because I have mild Reynaud's. Down to about 10°C I find that a truly waterproof jacket is more of a liability -- it may keep the rain out, but it also keeps the heat AND THE SWEAT in! Unless it's really cold and windy I'd rather just get rained on. And let's face it, if you're doing it right you aren't coming home dry either way. 😂
Rain jackets are useless cause you will get drenched in sweat anyway. Go shirtless, it's feels great, try it. I'll still wear a hat to reduced rain in my eyes.
I'm in the seattle area and i enjoy running in tights and shorts, then wool socks (like darn tuff), and then i wear a reflector with lights on it because visibility is always good haha. i'm heading over to the winter video now, something i struggled with last year! great info
I actually love running in the rain! Nobody on the streets! Too bad my knees and hips are killing me lately and i stopped running for a while now 😔 hopefully it will be better soon.
I have a pair of waterproof trail shoes, and they will keep my feet dry but arent good to run on asfalt roads. And as previously mentioned; a completly waterproof jacket will make you sweat like crazy, so you need a shirt that will transport the sweat away. And I think your dog just made your cap a bit more breathable... 🤣
Love your point about puddles. Just let it happen and get wet. I have a half marathon race on Nov 6th and forecast says rain and I know it will also be chilly. My first race in the rain. I just bought a Janji RainRunner. I want to do this the right way and keep warm and not so wet. I was going to spray my shoes but decided not too. Thank you for a very informative video and love your puppy.
Thanks for the tips! It was pouring rain for my first 10k and I had that exact experience with my hair haha! Never been so tangled, will never forget the braid again.
On race day we do not know what the weather is your right. Thank you for the gear selection. Now I just got to get over the non motivation for running in rain. My treadmill always calls me then.
For waterproof shoes, I just go with a "gore-tex membrane" pair of trail shoes for wet/winter conditions. Keeping my feet pretty much dry and still being breathable. Of course when it´s pouring down or one steps in deep puddles, the water will still enter from the top of the shoe anyway.
Continental rubber on sole so you’re confident you won’t slip. Peaked cap, keep hands warm and avoid having to stop at traffic lights wherever possible so you don’t get cold.
Had a be quaratined last fall for 4 days (Wasnt covid luckily). At the end for the 4th day it was raining sideways and it was dark. Best....run...ever!
Speaking from rainy England, completely waterproof running gear is pointless. Firstly, fully waterproof coats won't breath fast enough and you'll end up soaked in sweat. Secondly, if it's raining that much your legs, feet, face, neck & chest will get wet anyway. Man up ffs!
I've had my fair share of races in the rain😅🌧🏃♂️ . Wet feet is bad, but also your running shoes are going to need plenty of time to completely dry, even if you stuff them with paper or whatever. Hopefully where I live it doesn't rain the whole week, so I can go to the swimming pool that day and then run the next day.
For anyone who is curious. I have waterproof vessie's for work and they're great for relatively sedentary wet activities, they're waterproof and breathable, however they completely suck ergonomically and my feet hurt after just going for a 40 min - 1 hr walk, so I would never recommend them for running.
Dang, I clicked on this hoping to find something helpful. Everything said on here is common sense. I want to find advice on more technical aspects like material, specific products and some research rather than one person’s experience/opinion.
I'm sorry, but this video kinda lost its legitimacy for me when the coach started recommending a complete waterproof jacket... for running, no thank you very much.

yes, merino wool is always my go to!
Treadmill lol, best gear for running in the rain.
😂Yep!
Lol don’t let Goggins hear you say that
Honestly would rather be outside in the rain, unless it’s absolutely freezing and I don’t have the gear
Great information. I realized a while ago if I am unable to avoid puddles to just let it be. Love Echo, adorable pooch.
Randy Sun, claims to make breathable windproof, waterproof socks but I haven't tried them. Cuteness overload with that pup.
This is an excellent video on the topic. Thanks Coach Morgan.

Awesome! Very informative. I had no idea about the zippers. Thanks Morgan (also for bringing back Echo)!
Simple, straightforward, and very informative! Thank you for the efficient answer for exactly what I needed!

@@thespecialone7632 Mostly useless, yes. But on a long run in freezing rain, notsomuch.

Great tips coach, thanks
It’s the northeast let’s get that winter running gear video ready!
Great tips from Coach Morgan and her sidekick!

I never thought about that with the tightfitting socks. I've been doing it wrong this whole time!
Have a race tomorrow and it’s sposed to rain. I live in the desert 🌵 so this is a rare event.
extra points for the puppy.
Best assistant ever !!!
Great tips as usual 👌thanks!
Echo was so cute to watch checking out the gear.
Like your comment on the shoe part, thanks for the great tips coach Morgan
Thanks for the tips! It was pouring rain for my first 10k and I had that exact experience with my hair haha! Never been so tangled, will never forget the braid again.
it might seem like an insignificant tip, but it makes the biggest difference lol
Super cute border collie puppy! Thanks for sharing.
she's actually an aussie, but thanks!
@@TheRunExperience oh. An aussie with a tail! That is awesome!
Give the puppy something to eat coach haha. Great vid! Thanks for it. You guys rock!

Great video, need to see the snow cold weather video.
i love all your helpful tips. You should do things to do the morning of marathons. Like you should have your bib already safety pinned to your shorts.
great idea!

Verjari socks are great if you wanna run in the rain!

Great information as always, thanks Coach!
Also, what breed is that doggie of yours? He is adorable!! 😍
Border Collie, I think.
I gave this video a thumbs up because this is great information! But I’m leaving a comment cus your assistant is so darn cute 🥰

great shear ty. 220 LOL
Is there a non insanely pricy jacket for breathing ? I work hard Ie. shoveling dert. Also par core.
My thoughts are that as long as I’m not shivering, then I’m good
Thanks for the tips but I already got wet last week on my race. It began to rain at 4am and the race was at 5am. It was 100% rain all day.
oh no!
taped seams is the term 'i think 1:39 "shimmy, shiny" seal. cute dog btw
😂
Your doggo is cute af
We just had our first snow this weekend. My gf is a hardcore runner so we went for a quick run. I dont do the rain tho. Lol🤣🤣
Run inside on your treadmill on Zwift! 😊
Rain is for sure the time I wear my vibrams…basically a water shoe anyway so I let it be one for rainy days…
Puddle killer. ©Coach Morgan 2021
Im running a HALF marathon tomorrow and it will be 90% rainning😂
Never run when you hear thunder....
Actually waterproof socks exist
Garbage bags work just as good LOL
so true!
best running gear in the rain is just a cap, shorts and shoes. nothing more
