I'd love to see an episode on the history and disappearance of offline features. From spiltscreen to even the idea of disc games no longer being the remedy of playing offline, requiring internet to even install...
I second this. I am a cod dev and I love listening to this podcast. As a result of being a game dev in the modern AAA space, I am well aware of the challenges and advantages that the internet brings in gaming today. As a gamer I will say I pine for the days of buying a disc, putting it in the console and just playing it. No installs or internet connection required.
I think one of the main reasons why nobody gets excited for a yearly cod title anymore is because when you look at the last five games that we have gotten, they have all looked to be exact same. Neither has a concrete identity to them like how BO2 had its identity, and then AW was different and then Ghosts was different. None of the last five games look any different to each other. They have the same UI, same guns, not the best maps, same systems with battle passes, skins and micro transactions. They have a big focus on Warzone of which not many people care about anymore because of the fact that BR has been hammered to death.
Love, love the frequency you lads are coming out with these talks! I'm back to Call of Duty after many years because of you two, bought Cold War on steam sale and it really hit the spot for me, campaign was awesome and overall it gives me a whole lot of Black Ops & Black Ops II flair.
To add to that, the thing I am not that pleased with is the menu style, it's so bland and uncreative, that's what was so great about the older CoD's, especially BO1
4:22 I remember seeing somewhere that MW2 2022 was the biggest launch (in terms of money) in COD history. So I think they tried to replicate that by releasing MW3 but it wasn't as successful
I do feel like IF they make it for the game pass as they’ve hinted at, “Call of Duty HQ” should be where your interface is. The interface can change per year or per season to give us a new fresh take on the game. Along with that - I believe more players would be inclined to purchase the battle pass each season, also opening up room for purchase on bundles (commercial side of things lol). But maybe where the free to play only includes a portion of maps or modes so it’s not overflowing with the community causing server issues. Upon purchasing those passes will increase the community. Anyway - I love the idea of the cycle of studios. Where CW, Vanguard (which we don’t talk about), MW2 (same TDawg). But that cycle where a main studio is responsible for 80% of the game and they have 3 year development time with minor help from other studios to tweak it. As Cold War made me fall in love with the game, since than has been a disappointment. Although I do enjoy MWZ (for what’s playable sometimes lol) we as a community deserve something overall. But I hate to say it - there is only 1 Fortnite and I hate that game with a passion, but as my kid plays it, it’s chapter 5 season whatever and so on. Chapters = years. So COD needs a somewhat new formula and take on how the gaming industry is changing, while embracing their long lived fans.
Cod didn't struggle when its intentions were clear, focused and for the community. Now its resources are being spread too thin via several side modes which the community hardly pays attention to. Look at black ops 3 for example, outselling Modern warfare 2 this year, without a special sale, and 99% of players ONLY PLAYING ZOMBIES. If you have less to do, you do it better and the quality of the product increases as a result. Yes having a gap year is scary because what if it flops, but without gap years we are currently getting flop, after flop, after flop, after flop, after flop. How about take the gap years, make less modes and focus on the core game instead, take feedback from the community through polls and communication with people heavily informed such as creators etc. Its really easy to make this franchise more successful, its actually impressive how badly they're missing the mark, it almost feels intentional. And this new thing where they all use a unified engine, although probably highly efficient, sucks the soul out of each branch of the Call of Duty franchise, it was such a refreshing feeling having each release on a different engine and the games didn't feel so samey and bland. If the game wants to succeed, it needs to go back to its roots. And before anyone even dares to say "ThEy wEnT bAcK tO tHeIr rOoTs aNd iT sTiLl fAiLeD", no, they didn't, they didn't go back to their roots AT ALL. Using the same maps and guns doesn't mean going back to your roots, OLD SYSTEMS DOES. They keep missing the mark on this, by having new systems on old maps you just frustrate the community by not giving them what they are actually asking for. Until Cod understands this, its going to forever be on its steep decline, year after year, yes it will still sell, but no one is going to look back fondly on these titles the same way we do older ones.
In the way you said. Quality over quantity. In the case of star wars , Andor is the only high quality thing we’ve had and it now has made me realize how childish everything else Disney has made is.
They literally said before acquiring call of duty phil Spencer said he wants them to have creative freedom and make more games saldy phil doesnt have as much control because mircosoft satya nadella is cracking down on making sure xbox is profitable since they spent over 77 billon dollars
I honestly want COD, to come out every year, I love seeing the whole catalog of COD grow, imo there’s a lot of variety and I love the cycle, seeing the new concept, the new key art, I love it, this year is COD 21, and that’s awesome
@@GoingDarkPodcast I’ve heard. I thought he was speaking of them changing it up for the 2024 or 2025 titles. The possibility of AW2 coming in 2027 is amazing cause I liked AW. 2028 may be Ghosts 2 which seeing the Ghost mask on MWII and one season of MWIII hints at another ghosts title. The next four years of COD may be colossal. 🌊 🌊
I gotta be honest guys. I’m not a fan of the gap year idea. I actually really like having a fresh game every year. It allows a change in theme, a change in developers, and a change in focus. If I don’t like a cod 1 year, it means there’s a chance I like a cod the next year. That’s what happened with mw2 2022. I couldn’t imagine having to play a year two of that. Having a new game allows for a fresh start. I also think that the fans of the franchise wouldn’t actually like the gap year in practice. I can pretty much guarantee fans would complain that the game feels stale and/or boring. The game would lose interest fast, regardless of a dlc year 2 refresh. Fans of this franchise always look forward to the next yearly release. Cod is not like gta, rainbow six siege, or halo. Cod is cod.
I've seen so many people bash xdefiant, which I think it's going to be really good. Since it's going to make cod push to be better. I see chopper playing with that engram. "Bank those motes and summon a prime evil"
I dont want a gap while infinity ward is around. I have to wait so long inbetween for Treyarch games as it is. The way I look at the cycle is there is Treyarch who are the best. And then the rest of the content is filler until then. I mostly choose not to play it as i believe IW and SHG dont deliver what i prefer. And I've accepted it.

quality over quantity always. i would be totally fine with them releasing multiple paid dlc like they used to because live service is not good for cod imo. i also dont think gta 6 is gonna be the best, idk why ppl hype it up so much. they act like gta 6 is gonna change the world its weird.

it was! but the problem was everyone quit the game and their mid year sales bombed lol
@@GoingDarkPodcast the game was trash tbh and im a zombie guy anyways so havent touched a cod since cold war
Personally I wish they would drop Infinity Ward and give Raven software the full third studio treatment

Wow, thanks!
U have an idea they can swap studios every year and the studios get 3 years to work on a gamegame for example tryarch iw ssledgehammer trarch etc

Love the podcast guys!! Would you guys be interested in bringing in a more zombies focused channel onto the podcast? If so lets link up!
Could you guys start clearly numbering the podcast episodes in the thumbnails.
we number them on spotify and apple, i worry about it effecting the title with search. Maybe we do it in the description?

i think im with you. its nice to get something every year
I'm hoping bo6 is bo3 style cod we've had boots on the ground style game since 2019. they need to change it up a bit in my opinion.
That would be a shocker but being that the next title is set during the Gulf War, the chances of an exo-suit, jet pack COD is slim-to-none.
Exo game is apparently coming in 2027

EXACXTLY. its like a big risk to not be every year. Mw2 22 for 2 years i may have moved to roblox LOL
these two games shouldn't be compared as much as we love COD, it's not as popular as the golden age. I'm more afraid they try to become or imitate GTA
That’s going to be fun
