ABLETON LIVE TUTORIAL: Sampling kicks from any track with George Nicholas

- Sampling a kick drum without bleed from other instruments is usually only possible when there is nothing else playing in the mix. This particular method can be used to extract a clean sample even when other instruments are playing at the same time as the kick.

Just a tip to capitalise more on this: Converting to mono can really remove some of them unwanted tones, since the kick drums are usually mixed in mono and upper frequencies wider. Cancels out some things nicely! Loving the tutorials on this channel.
An even better way to do this would be to use Mid/Side mode in Utility, since converting to mono just combines the whole signal into the center. Setting Utility to 100% mids in Mid/Side mode will completely get rid of the side (stereo) signal, only leaving the center instead of combining the channels. You can also achieve the same thing in EQ8 if you set it to Mid-Side and high pass the whole thing.
This is one of those tricks you learn 1st week in ableton, never use then see it 5 years later and it's a godsend. Just me? lol

Amazing tutorial and another reason why Im starting to.love Ableton. I would of shaped it further with a glue compressor.
You should do this with a linear phase eq for the best result (just my thought, I actually haven't tried it yet)

Great tutorial but in today music the tracks are usually clip/limited.. isn't this a problem to use distorted or already mastered samples in a mix?
Part of the glory of sampling is using sound sources of all levels of quality, sound, medium etc. it's really up to the taste of the producer! If you're sampling from records, tapes, or digitally, most released music is going to be mastered and compressed to some degree. It's true that some sample sources are going to be more compressed and limited than others so you've got to use your ears here to decide what samples you think sound good or otherwise. If you find a heavily distorted or compressed sound that you like and it sounds great, why not use it? It could just mean backing off the compression or further processing of that sound in your own project perhaps.
Thanks for the replay. Sorry I meant if its gonna be mastered again its a little bit dangerous..the kick for example can be distorted in the mastering
+adirsab don't fear the danger - mastering won't necessarily add distortion and distortion can be a fine thing anyway. Let your ears be your guide

since you sample it from a mastered track: when you drag the sampled kick back in your project, do you still do a lot of after processing to it or do you even layer it with other kicks or do you just leave it as it is before mastering your track?
Hey, thanks! All of those options are possible. Often you’ll use this process because there’s a kick you really want as it is. And while anything is possible, often just a bit of Eq to complete the fit in the song

Thanks this helped but, after flattern the 3 layers (low, mid and highs) I loosed some low-end. How did this happen? I checked the wave form and it deviates from the original (on the low end)
Try a linear phase eq instead of the one he uses, if you still get the lows disappearing a bit try micro moving the samples until they combine to the loudest lowest tone possible. The important thing here about copying a kick is to get its timbrical qualities. You can always use your vst arsenal to eq it to be fatter. Other thing is i noticed in this video the tone was panned to the right you can always remove panned sounds easier and just be left with the kick, try a Mid Side EQ and lower all the volume from the SIDE , This is not the same as using utility and making it mono, you'll only unite the kick with the tone more doing that, try it you'll see. Peace.
When I rendered the kick and was ready to use, there was a pop at the end? but before I had rendered, the kick had no pop.
Sebastian Perico you could try adding fades at the end before rendering. If that doesn't work you could add a fade to the end when the rendered sample is in a project.

does it work similarly for sampling high hats/snares?
This exploits the way that kick drums usually cover a very wide frequency range (a sub, knock, and click). You may get lucky with other drums if they cover a similar range, but this process is really geared towards kicks.
if you use a snare you gonna need to roll off the low end that's if the kick and snare are clashing

Lol if u get a kick caught in a snare sample there must be like a half beat phase delay they should never be hittin on the same note

Is the same Sampling Snare or hihat from any track ?
a snare shouldn't have a lot of low frequency if it has been EQ'ed and a high hat shouldn't have a lot of low or mid frequencies so if you are sampling, you may only need a filter on the track depending on the higher pitched elements. Try and find the sweet spot of the sample that you want and EQ it accordingly to get the best sample. Hope this helps :)

Seems like a lot of work for a kick sample. Couldn’t you just layer on a synth stab or something to get the same effect with more freedom?

fucking awesome tutorial, but make sure to use a linear phase eq while making crossover on kicks , phase problems destroy the kick in fact you can actually see it on the waveform , the top kick looks weird and its sound like shit , also it eats some bass .just dont use the parametric eq 2 from fl studio it doesnt work for this kind of stuff, it took me a couple years to realize that dat. good luck sampling your shit,

You remade the beat thats the only reason it works. There is no part where the kick plays alone without vocal.

it makes use of phase cancelation, by isolating parts of the sample with a linear phase EQ and then inverting the phase with the utility plug in.
