I've watched this like 10 times. My friends and I decided to make them. We bought the wood, made the longboards and now we all love them. Thanks for the great tutorial, it helped a lot :)
I really like that you do these projects for the sheer joy of creating and building, and don't get too caught up on perfection or the minutia of each task. Manual work is wildly under-appreciated in our society, especially as we have computers either printing or milling more and more objects for us, so I appreciate that you're reminding people that they can try something on their own and learn and master new skills. Awesome.
I make longboards. I go the more traditional route of making them with baltic birch plywood so that they last long. But that board is great for casual riders (and a lot cheaper). And i found it really funny because I use, literally, the exact same trucks and wheels set from amazon. They are really good. Nice job.
Hey just a suggestion overall, at the end of your videos you should add up the price that it took to make the thing that you made. Just so that we can be like "oh cool that's pretty cheap", or "oh snap that's expensive". Just to get an idea. But thank you!! I love your videos!
Gerrit Sluyter Well if you calculate time, materials, and tools, this is probably a $3-4000 board. If you subtract the tools (because you already own them), and value your time at $25/hr for a day (8 hrs), then this board was about $250 ($200 in labor, $40 in trucks + wheels, $10 in griptape + hardware). You could get a better complete longboard on Amazon for 60 bucks, but hey it was about the journey, not the destination.
But it’s not about the cost but the creation. If everything was down to cost, you’d never invest in these projects. Most things cost less if bought in a store. But if it’s handcrafted, that’s something else. The tools you invest in should be for multiple projects. I’ve built 10 planters, 10 bird boxes, two book shelves and a dining room table. Next project is a longboard. Now I’ve probably spend $500 on tools and $100 on screws and fittings with still lots left over. That’s a lot of money for one project but what I’ve created so far is maybe +$500 in value. Obviously you have to account for time spent but also think of the new skills you’ve picked up, and going back to what I said earlier, “it’s your creation”. Do it for the love too. And build up your tools over time. I started with a hand saw, electric drill. I learnt how to put things together. Simple things. As you develop, naturally you want to improve and so will your tools.
I'm really glad you've left some of your earlier videos online. For one, it shows how far you've come as a presenter and how comfortable you've come in front of the camera. But more importantly to me, it shows what you can do when you've got limited tools compared to what you have now and what you can do with them. I'm hoping to start making my own TH-cam videos soon, and videos like this showing where you started from compared to where you are now are brilliant! Not sure if you ever read the comments on your older posts, but I think this video now means I've watched everything you've posted! I've just started downloading the podcasts you've done and really looking forward to listening to them! Love the content, and can't wait to see what you come up with next!
Love this video! I've seen a lot of how to vids for a longboard but yours is hands down the simplest and easy to follow instructions! Especially cause i plan on making one over the christmas holidays!
That was fun, thanks. For that stripe, my guess is cherry. As for the grip-tape, polyurethane and play sand would've been a great alternative. I used that process on a swing seat in my back yard, and it works wonderfully. Sorry to be a youtube know-it-all ;)
pocket83 Oh my god you are my hero pretty much. I say that because I met my hero, Adam Savage. I also know you probably won’t see this because of how old this comment is, Nevertheless, keep it up!
thanks for inspiring me to make 2 of my own board. I got a hand carved one in california, it was amazing, the grip on the top was just carvings in the wood sticking out at different heights to make a really cool design in the shape of an native american with a head-dress, in which got ran over by a car, so I looked up videos, found this, and a couple months later finally found the courage to start making them.
im sure you already knew it but there is a reason why longboards are not made from massive hardwood. If you cruise along Californian roads its not a big deal ... but if you mishandle it or jump onto it in a wrong way its gonna break. Its beautiful to do it like this, but know the forces ... and what to use it for (Boards that are layered are about 100% stronger, they flex more etc...)
Haha I actually love this all the references to some one that does skate haha. I'm a sponsored long boarder and some of my best boards are the ones I make because you can make it how you want it... Within reason that is. Good job on scoring the wheels and trucks off Amazon that's all you really need for a first board and if your not going ham. Nice work bud love the vids keep it up.
actually, it's a fairly common thickness for DIY boards, 3/4". A lot of people use birch plywood to make their own boards, which generally comes in that thickness.
I Like To Make Stuff Oh, :3 Next time could stack thinner piece's of Baltic birch. about 3-4 layers of it glued into a single piece should give you some flex and will more than likely last longer.
***** yeah, absolutely! I definitely plan on making a ply board in the future. A friend and I are going to try to make some forms too, so the board has some shape to it, but that's a whole process that I need to understand a little better before trying it.
I've been thinking about making my friend one of these as a graduation present. I'm just wondering how well the hardwood has held up since you made it? I can't decide if I want the natural beauty of hardwood or the practicality and durability of plywood.
+Jx3 Productions I would say cedar would be too soft to make a usable product. Possibly you could make a sandwich of wood with cedar on the outside like a veneer with hardwood on the inside. But hey who am I to dictate what you do. Best of luck.
Thanks so much! I'm building my first longboard for a school project and I know this is not the most practical board but it works great for my limited time! Will definitely make another one with flex!
Is this board for Rae Sremmurd cuz you're in the no flex zone with that thick ass board... Respect to you though, it looks pretty sick with that darker wood stripe, and I know making it wasn't easy. Looks like a ham board.
Love the simplicity of the board. Now I want to go make one or two for myself and the kids to ride. Thanks for the inspiration! Maybe a link to the hardware you used in the description would be helpful to some in the future. Cheers, Brett
I Like To Make Stuff i love watching these videos although im 16 i try my best and work with some of the tools i have dont have all the fancy stuff but sometimes it workes out great
Seconded on the play sand for next grip job. Lay down a thick layer of poly, sift your sand so you get only the big chunks and spread that stuff over the board and then let her dry and throw one more coat of poly down to seal it in. Not super grippy but will really let that beautiful wood show through. Nice work!
Raised in Santa Cruz and in the 70's this is the way we used to make boards (w/0 bisquets) I like the thickness but you covered up your beautiful stain work. Try the nice stainwork followed with varathane..."Thats the 70's way." Good Job and by the way im 50 now and still skateboard. Keep in touch.
+I Like To Make Stuff Hey, I'm not sure whether you'll see this, but I just wanted to ask. I'm interested in making one for a friend. Have the biscuits held up well to the strain the board's been put under, or would you suggest a different method if you were to build another?
Steele Guitars Hey! This board has held up really well and I still ride it. You might also be interested in the other board I made though using a different method. th-cam.com/video/UW6-RQByjMs/w-d-xo.html
+islandonlinenews These are rkp's (reverse kingpin trucks), they work differently than tkp's (traditional kingpin trucks) which are the one's you are thinking of.
great video I think the stripe is cherry wood and the see through grip tape awesome. I been thinking about building a board for my son but he breaks most of his boards . the hardwood would break even easier. though I'm sure it is great for a cruiser and looks great . I noticed you talked about the new bandsaw get yourself a new blade the blades they come with usually aren't very good a 1/4 inch 6tpi would work better for that you will find its much easier to follow your lines ....thanks for posting
Cuba Chattyman actually its a different krriented kingpin rather than it being on the bolt it gives you a better turning angle and i would defifnitely recomend itfor any longboarder
+I Like To Make Stuff I saw your other video, you built that board pretty well. I guess this board was a good practice run for your latest board. Keep up the good work!
Ooo, if it's rough grip tape you must have to use gloves to get rid of airbubbles in the grip tape.. or that would chafe.. quite a bit.. This is an honest question, I love that you put these videos up.. with the time & tools this is a great project.. Also I'm thinking I need to reverse the trucks on my (bought) longboard, due to reading some of the comments as mine are not set out RKP.. Great video thanks.. :) Also I know what you mean about wanting to learn forming, as my longboard is dead flat which may make slides a little tricky, as I have seen boards with a slight concave help you stay on better when sliding.. But great woods used in the board.. such a shame plastics 'took over' from the may varieties of wood we can use to build/create great projects.. :)
You're right in saying that this is where a planer would have come in handy. After the initial cuts, it would have been great to thin out the board a little just to shave off some of the weight and add a bit more flex potential. Out of curiosity, what woods would you recommend for a board similar to this but with thinner stripes?
That's pretty freakin' beautiful, for making something that's you're gonna use more as a "functional object" than a "precision machine". Very old-school styling, it suits the project well! I'm a biker, not a skater, but I had the opportunity to make friends with a fellow Artist who owns a skate shop awhile back when we were set up next to each other at an exhibition, and when I told her I can't skate worth junk she said, "You could definitely longboard, I can tell by your walk." I've been tempted to try ever since... Keep makin' cool stuff brethren!
+CapnsKustomWorks Thanks! You should definitely try it! I'm not much of a skater either, but cruising on the longboard is a lot of fun. If you're interested in this one, keep an eye on my channel over the next couple of weeks for a related project ;) (hint hint)
This is really ossom man! Honestly I am still planning to go on longboarding and I want to do it my own.. since its DIY it may not be as perfect as commercial ones so I should not complain why you use this or that. cool stuff!
I bought the same set of trucks but with wheels that glow in the dark. They're an immitation of randal trucks and really pretty crappy. I only bought them for the wheels because normal wheels alone are more costly than that set, anyway they serve their purpose. I really liked dark wood you laid in the middle. But with such thick wood I usually sand the bottom edges to give it a thinner feel. Kind of like what apple does to the back of their new ipads, it really helps. Also if you want less air bubbles try rolling the wheel on the grip when you first put it on. Great video!
Thank you so much for this video! I wanted to get a longboard for a costume I needed , and in Israel stuff like that is stupidly expensive, your video totally saved me! Although I don't have the equipment and skills to build it but I think I can figure it out
It's interesting to see the progression. This was Bob excited about a band saw, I don't think he realized then just how far this might take him... I think there's some kind of lesson there that most of us might never heed.
Do you ever do projects where you don`t use power tools? I don`t own any power tools but would really like to make one of these projects. I know most of these projects are possible with hand tools but it would be really cool if you would show how (using only hand tools). You`re awesome btw
graet videos man. There is no need to push the trucks to the end of the board. If you leave space or multipositons you leave space for wheelies and nose wheelies. How heavy it is. and how bouncy?
On longboards you put the trucks on reverse kingpin but on trick boards you use kingpin because on trickboards you need to hide the bolt so it doesnt get caught on stuff when doing tricks, and also reverse kingpin is better for more stability but also great for carving too, it just gives you the control you need for longboarding overall, when on a trickboard sometimes you want less control and for the board to be more stiff.
I've watched this like 10 times. My friends and I decided to make them. We bought the wood, made the longboards and now we all love them. Thanks for the great tutorial, it helped a lot :)

Who else knows that they will never have the time, money, energy, or tools to make these projects, but watches anyways? Cuz I do
Same with food channels or other DIY ones.
I know right
You may want to add skill to that list for people like me! XD
Me, but My friend is not being smart and trying to make one.

don't worry about it being a bad board. it looks really great and it seems to ride super well. and you built it. that's pretty sweet.

do an electronic longboard, like the boosted board!
+Fotios Monocheir wtf, are you high? or stupid? or both?
I would ask how old you are, but I know you can't count that high

Love it, though I wish the grip didnt make it lose that beautiful color you got from staining it
Saw the video yesterday, made it myself today. It's awesome!!
Make an Electric version (e-board)
Interesting video that shows how easy it is to make things if you love to work with the materials. Nice!
I'm curious what the deck weighs.
Love watching his videos, much respect being able to make almost anything
Awesome video and awesome channel definitely subscribing and showing your channel to my friends!!
Thanks!!

Love the GoPro on the board when you were using the band saw!
Who else watches this but never thinks of building these stuff
I'm a longboarder and when I saw this video it was sooo cool I wanna make my own now 😂😂😂 good job on the board full support bro

Isn't this board really heavy?
Depends on what you're comparing it to, but no, it's not too heavy to ride or anything.
Dude u rock xD
sam Costin. I bet

If it was thiner it would brake.

always used to watch iltms, and still do but now I'm able to make some of the stuff Bob makes. thanks for the inspiration :)
Awesome, thanks!
bro dont ever use glove wile cutting stuff if u dont want to loose ur hand
+mjtpfe If you could use proper grammar and had overall better spelling maybe I would listen to your advice.
dude this project inspired me to make a longboard . thanks from Albania
Pretty sure you put the trucks on backwards, the king pin is usually on the inside.
+islandonlinenews See the MANY other comments regarding this.
+islandonlinenews These are rkp's (reverse kingpin trucks), they work differently than tkp's (traditional kingpin trucks) which are the one's you are thinking of.
+Tanner Christle word.
Actually on a Longboards alot of the time the trucks are supposed to be that way with the king pin facing outward
+Jesse Fiant well long boarders are kinda backwards...
Very nice. I like how you built it without making a jig.
Awesome! But take those darn gloves off haha
great video I think the stripe is cherry wood and the see through grip tape awesome. that's not how you make a good longboard! you have to layer sheets of would together in order to make the board flex
+Gabrielius Piecaitis Maybe this isn't how YOU make a longboard, but this IS one of the ways I've made them. And it works great.
+I Like To Make Stuff I saw your other video, you built that board pretty well. I guess this board was a good practice run for your latest board. Keep up the good work!

Awesome board! I was going to make one like this and was wondering if doweling would work as good as doing it with biscuit joints?
Yes, that would also work!
hey bob is there any way that you could give me the sketch of the board
Like it. Asides from the grip tape it looked amazing. Is there anything else you could use instead?
I guess he could've use spray-on grip, but I don't know how good that is
That looks epic! I'm building one for my daughter that looks a lot like this.

This is really ossom man! Honestly I am still planning to go on longboarding and I want to do it my own.. since its DIY it may not be as perfect as commercial ones so I should not complain why you use this or that. cool stuff!
Your channel has certainly come a long way! But this content is still awesome!
Im planning on making one for my bf for his birthday ^^ Thanks a bunch man!~
Man you're awesome making stuff, I really enjoy watching your videos........good stuff
Great video!
those aluminum harbor freight bar style clamps are really nice for the cheap price if u don't have any long clamps
You are AWESOME , man! - Respect.
I still can’t believe I found this video 5 years ago because I wanted to make a longboard and now, in 2020, I’m still watching every video, every week
Do you ever do projects where you don`t use power tools? I don`t own any power tools but would really like to make one of these projects. I know most of these projects are possible with hand tools but it would be really cool if you would show how (using only hand tools). You`re awesome btw
Great video man. I enjoyed it! It's good seeing creativity and enjoying what you do. Keep it up.
This is my third vid that I've seen on your channel and I think there great!
I want to make a longboard with my dad, because we both want one. He has all the materials to do this thank you for the tutorial
dude this is so sick omg
graet videos man. There is no need to push the trucks to the end of the board. If you leave space or multipositons you leave space for wheelies and nose wheelies. How heavy it is. and how bouncy?
On longboards you put the trucks on reverse kingpin but on trick boards you use kingpin because on trickboards you need to hide the bolt so it doesnt get caught on stuff when doing tricks, and also reverse kingpin is better for more stability but also great for carving too, it just gives you the control you need for longboarding overall, when on a trickboard sometimes you want less control and for the board to be more stiff.
this is sick bro, you've inspired me, gonna make one my self
That board looks sick:D
