    Hi Robert- Happy New Year! Good video. That wooden American Flag above the mandoor. Did you make it? Its very nice and I'd love to have one. Thanks

      Happy New Year to you and yours. I hope it’s a safe and prosperous year. The wooden flag was a gift from a family member that makes them. It’s cool. I purchased two of them from him… one for each shop. He is in Northern Ohio. The big issue is shipping. The last time I asked him he was charging $140 for the flag.

    Great video! Weaver currently has the Heritage skiver for 25% off. Do you think the additional $330 for the Heritage over the economy is worth it? Have you ever run into something this one couldn't accomplished, but the upgraded model could?

      That’s a good question. Unfortunately I have not tried the more expensive one. The more expensive one has a wider blade which gives more sharpened area to use. I would say that I don’t think most would be strong enough to do a wide strip that is wider than the smaller machine. The only thing that might be interesting would be to see if the adjustment crew makes it faster to set the thickness that you would desire. Sorry I’m not more help. I do like mine and use it almost daily.

      Thanks Dean. It’s pretty easy and I really should sharpen the skiver more often.

    Again, another outstanding video. I only use my splitter for thinning the last 5" of my belt straps. I've had problems with having to pull hard on the strap to thin the strap. You pointed out to me what a dummy I am, I've been pulling on a dull blade. My splitter uses long razor blades and I changed it and no more problems. Thanks for making me aware of this issue! I'm also interested in knowing where you got your counter top mounted stitching pony. Thank you and Happy New Year. Jim from Orlando

      Jim thanks for watching and commenting on my videos. So I say that if my video helps just one person then it was worth making. Sounds like I reached my goal today. As far as the stitching pony goes I need to talk about that and will very soon. There are things that I like about the pony but things that I don’t like and the things I don’t like might out weigh the advantages. I’ll be sure to cover it.

    Hey Robert, another great tutorial. Your sharpening skills are real smooth. Where in the leather world did you learn them or are they carried over from your woodworking skills? Have a great day.

      Trial and error more than anything. my father could sharpen a fence post and shave with it. He told me that you just have to keep practicing... So I have.

    Thanks for this tutorial, Robert. Based on your before and after, I need to tune up my Weaver splitter this winter. I have been putting it off since it seemed a bit intimidating to get it set correctly, but your explanation gave me hope that I can improve the way it performs! Have you tried using water instead of WD-40 on the sandpaper and if so, have you seen any difference during the sharpening process between the two? Also, I don't know if it would make much difference for you, but I put an index mark on the top of the depth adjustment knob on the splitter so I had a reference when changing thickness settings. Not the same as a depth indexer as you mentioned, but it does allow me to see how much of a change I make each time I rotate the knob. Just a thought. Happy New Year, by the way!

      You know the mark to help keep track of how far you move it is a great idea. As far as oil and water go I wouldn’t see much difference, especially with the wet and dry sandpaper. I was concerned the first time sharpening. Thought that I might make things worse. Yet, there really isn’t much to mess up.

    WD 40? Is the sandpaper 1 and done? Or can you reuse it a few times?

    • @InMyBusyLittleShop
      @InMyBusyLittleShop  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I will use that sandpaper to sharpen other tools until the grit of fairly worn out. You can use other oils or even water.

    I'm looking for a leather sewing machine that's able too make clothing but also had zig zag stitch. Aswell as being able to sew 1/2 leather. Any recommendations

    • @InMyBusyLittleShop
      @InMyBusyLittleShop  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      We other then watching my mother use her singer sewing machine to make clothes and one buckskin jacket, I don’t know much about fabric sewing. Yet if I go to the last part of your question I see you want to sew what I think you are saying 1/2” leather and fabric. There might be a sewing machine out there that can do that. If so I don’t know it. I guess if it was heavy duty fabric but probably not clothing fabric. Maybe someone in my “channel family” has some experience in this area. Maybe they can answer. My Cobra 26 has a nice range but 1/2” is a stretch and I don’t think it will do lightweight stuff below some thinner leather.

      If your wanting to sew 1/2 ounce leather along with fabric in a straight and zig zag stitch, a vintage Pfaff 130 is what I have been looking for. Robust German engineering, simple to work on and can be fitted with a new servo motor. Here in the Seattle/Puget Sound area I’ve seen them as low as $50 although rare. Most listings are around $300 which is reasonable considering the versatility and compared to a brand new machine. Good luck and happy hunting!
