Lending our generator out to friends in need after the HUGE statewide ice storm power outage

  • After filming the last video where I set up our generator in the ice storm to get our power and heat back up and running, we thankfully were only out for about 4 hours and had power restored before midnight. However many people all over the state of Michigan were far from being as lucky. Some of our friends mentioned they still didn't have power 2 days later and that they could see their breath in the house when they woke up! I couldn't let people suffer in the cold knowing I had a perfectly good generator sitting idle in my garage, so I loaded it up in the truck and hauled it over to set up and get their space heaters and refrigerator running again.

Iv been in that same situation helping out my gram. Her house did not have a generator outlet on the house. But i did back feed the panel through the dryer outlet . In a pinch you just gotta know what your doing. Or if he got a natural gas dryer you could have made a suicide cord in back feed the panel. Through a 110 20 amp receptacle in the house to get the heater to run. In a pinch.

Yeah I couldn't have it sitting unused in the garage knowing they didn't have power. It did great for them!

I hate to sound unsympathetic but why didn't they take simple and inexpensive steps in advance to prepare for the inevitable. Praise to you though for helping them out
During a recent 10 day disaster here in Ottawa, I used three of my four generators to provide backup power for freezers to many of my customers. Helping others as we can is something we all must do. But a simple expenditure of $500 in advance for a used gennie is not much to do to prepare for the worst....just saying

It's a lot of work to set up and keep a portable generator working. My in-laws have lost power several times and I had thought about bringing one of my generators over but it requires more skills than I think they have.

Honestly,, it only takes two things to keep a generator in shape for when it's needed....put Stabil in the gas tank to keep the fuel from going bad, and draining the carburetor completely before storage to prevent the formation of deposits that will clog it up. Then when the time comes, you only need a few extension cords to power what you need.
Backfeeding through a dryer plug can kill people working on the power lines, and is highly illegal besides being downright dangerous.
