    What is in my tool kit isn’t important, but how I got there is. I watched a bunch of TH-cam videos and built a loaded out kit in a maxpedition pouch. Eventually I kept track of what I was actually using and removed all the stuff that I never used. Now I have a tool kit that “fits me”, and haven’t had to change anything in a couple years.

      @jimbeaux89 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I did the same exact thing with my Maxpedition M1 waist pouch. I have everything ranging from my surge/bitkits/bit extension, to a notepad, pen and eyedrops. I tailored it to fit my needs, and it’s incredibly handy.

      @Whigu 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I'm doing same thing. Most of these EDC Maxpedition pouches are full of brand new tools which has never used because they are made for show not for go/use. Probably that's why they always have mostly same things and lots of bits but nobody has think what bits they actually needs... It's just what comes with tools.

      I also would love to hear more about how and when they use these tools. I watch these videos because well I enjoy tools. I often think, “wow that is great!” but I often say to myself, how often do you really use that?

    I like to have a telescopic magnetic retrieval tool. I also have an Altoids tin to keep small parts in, and I glued a small refrigerator magnet in the bottom of it so whatever I put in there, stays in there even if bumped or knocked over. Keep up the great work.

    In my bag for the car is basic hand tools, electrical tape, fuses, about 3 ft of electrical wire, Teflon tape, hose clamps (s,m,l),zip ties, Bic lighter, utility knife ,sand paper and an Olight. Think that’s it. My EDC knife maintenance tools not really mobile, but I am getting a small bit driver for my keys like the Civivi key bit. Thanks for the great video.

    I just bought a new edc backback. It's not exactly a tool kit but it has the stuff I may need in my day to day life. This video came up at a great time since I'm in the middle of deciding what to add or remove and how to organize it all. I also can connect with the pry bar being used as a driver. Earlier today I needed a flat head screwdriver and ended up using the pry bar on my KTC-2.

    Over the weekend I decided to make an EDC. After some experimentation I settled on a robust red fabric pencil case with two zip-up plastic fronted sections and in the middle a flat area with narrow cordoned off sections for individual pens/pencils. It was either designed as a pencil case or for make-up. Anyway I started loading stuff into it at random to see what it would take and I made a few mods using velcro and my glue gun. I fiddled, added stuff, took stuff out, fitted stuff into smaller containers. Lets see... feminine stuff because I am female. A lipstick, comb, tiny little bag of homemade toothpaste tabs, and a toothbrush (it and the comb and the pen fit nicely into the segments for pens and I protect the toothbrush by fitting a tiny ziplock bag over the head), individually packaged bacteriacidal wipes, a pen, sticky labels to write on, a beautifully FLAT plastic bottle with shampoo that will double as ordinary soap. My Pioneer SAK that I've had for 35 years. plasters, a sewing kit, pain meds of various sorts, a sheet of good aluminium foil, 5 metres of THICK string that I waxed. A small ziplock bag with a few odds and ends in it, a few short zip ties, some anti-itch cream, some Vaseline, a few cotton pads, nail clippers, 2 pairs of tweezers, a little pair of scissors, cotton buds, an old bank card with some 2 inch gaffer tape on it, a cigarette lighter (very flat) and some firelighters, a tiny mirror in a case that I got from a Christmas cracker. I just loaded and carried on loading - this thing seemed BOTTOMLESS. When I had finished it hefted nicely in my hand. It's 21cm long, 11cm wide and 7cm deep and weighes less than 400gms. And I'd fitted upwards of EIGHTY items in it! I finished off by wrapping a TINY little towel around it and holding it in place with two elastic bands. Then I dropped it in my handbag with my wallet and smiled to myself, wondering if I would ever actually USE it. Last night at 12:45 I found myself in an ambulance on my way to hospital. Clutching my handbag, a spare pair of panties - and my EDC. This morning I was able to wash my face with one of the wipes, clean my teeth with one of the toothpaste tabs, comb my hair and apply a lick of lipstick. Now I need a portable power bank - my phone near passed out on me. But BOY - am I glad I put that kit together!

    There is a utility blade that I think is worth a mention, and that is the Milwaukee fastback series. They have compact, to one that has a bit driver. They are readily available at most hardware stores and they are affordable. I got mine for I believe 10 bucks.
    For my carry, I have used the fastback to phase out folding knives, and when I carry a knife it is a fixed blade such as the white river backpacker or benchmade socp.
    Anyway just giving a shout out to the Milwaukee fastback and sharing thoughts. Cheers folks

With a Craftsman ratchet and Nitize fishing tool makes a great pry tool and scraper . And other things . It was my pocket tool kit at work when I need to take any electrical panels

    I have a maxpedition pouch with all my knife maintenance stuff in, but it's not something I carry around with me. Knife maintenance/modding gets done at home. I do have a Vanquest edcm maximizer pouch loaded with goodies that I keep in my car's console. The king is a Vanquest trident 21 backpack for bugging out/getting home that I'll throw in my trunk if I'm taking a long trip, staying somewhere overnight.

    The bit driver/s I use is the Fixit Stix.
    It comes with two seperate drivers with attachments at each end and is compatible with all standard Bits.
    The two drivers means that you can use them separately like you mentioned in the video, but, they also can simply be attached together to make a T Bar for the really stubborn screws etc.

I believe everyone should learn to sharpen on a whetstone first and foremost before they get any other sharpening equipment.

    I'm trying to build an EDC tool kit, that can be carried in a back pocket or a cargo pocket, literally, everyday, all the time, by taking the best of what I find in other kits on YT and such. I'm also leaving behind some suggestions, not criticisms, that might improve the kits I find on YT.
    To minimize the Chipole burrito issue, maybe just carry a few extra T bits and if you need to back one up with the other, just hold it with the pliers that's in your kit and lose the driver part. I wouldn't consider the ratchet gadget for bits "essential" for a pocket kit either. The wrist works pretty good in a pinch without a mechanical ratchet, if you want a smaller "burrito".
    I worked in Industrial maintenance for over forty years and, admittedly, I didn't find myself prying the scales off of many knives, but I did need to pry and lift things all the time. I found that grinding the top jaw of a pair of Channel Lock pliers down to a sharp wedge at the tip of the jaw turned it into a very serviceable pry bar that was always in my pocket and, as you pointed out, it served double duty, which is always a plus. It really didn't have any impact on it as a plier. At one time I carried a pair of Channel Locks that I ground the tips of the handles down on as well, to use for when the wedge on the jaw didn't quite work. That would be a hard modification to do to Knipix Pliers, as much as they cost, but on a budget, a small pair of some other brand of plier wouldn't be so painful. Make one handle a wedge and the other a flat head screwdriver to turn, what I think you called, a camber plate on your camera. Shaping one handle into a 1/4" square at its end will allow you to slip on a 1/4" - 6 sided socket and torque down any 1/4" bits or sockets that you have with you.
    I didn't realize that this was a video about a knife maintenance EDC kit. Most of my comments won't be of any use for that purpose, but I hunted and pecked my way through the darn thing, so I ain't wastin' it! Sorry, and maybe someone will find it useful. Peace.

    Threadlocker has an expiration date. If you’re keeping it for several years that’s too long. Consult the date and replace as necessary.

    Not being grammar police, but curious if that is how you are supposed to say Knipex. I’ve always just pronounced it Nipex with the K silent like in the word Knight. Anybody know what that company prefers?

      @@wastelandwarrior9738 Yeah. That’s an old comment from me. I’ve heard it come straight from the company pronouncing the K since. :)

    I chose the Knipex Cobra XS too, although I think these are pretty standard in the EDC community now. Great little pliers.

      Never mind the kids! This Spring here in Citrusdal (Western Cape of South Africa) a new 'miggie' (midge, bug, insect) has appeared. If it bites you you scratch yourself to hell and gone and the bite becomes red/purple and nasty. We have a very good cortisone-based anti-itch ointment called Mylocort. I squeeze some of it into a tiny little Vaseline container. I mean, TINY. I bought several of them and emptied the Vaseline out, washed them out and squeezed in the Mylocort. (except for two - I chucked one of the Vaselines into my home-based First Aid Kit and the other into my EDC.

    What's the price on an "okay" bit driver? Every set I've seen in the past couple years has been stupidly expensive. It's a small screwdriver, not open heart surgical equipment. There's no reason a compact screwdriver should cost $100+ (ever).

  • @thegeekwithgear

    Great idea having a T6 in one bit driver and a T8 in another. Especially when they're stored inside the handle of the bit driver itself.

    this says edc kit... if your knife needs pivot oil and loctite that often that you carry them daily, i think you need a new knife. 😂 now if this is just a general kit, sure, but a kit you always have on you? i seriously want to know how often you lube and loctite a knife. lol. no disrespect intended. sincerely curious...

      I work with knives for a living and have anywhere from a handful to dozens of new knives come in each month, so it's not usually the same knife with any sort of regularity. I also totally disassemble some knives when sharpening.
