Despite the short runtime, this episode is a visual *masterpiece.* From Shadow & Maria's heartfelt bond, to her fainting after running for a while because of her condition, Shadow's awesome fight against Emerl. Everything turning into a personal Silent Hill hell for Shadow as everything is quickly passing him because of his PTSD. The frames of Maria's death. AND MAN. I was not expecting Gerald's execution to show up at all. It's been a while since we've seen or heard that until now.
Well done, Sega. It seems you've truly redeemed yourself.

Yes and I’m also glad that they included the reason of why Maria was up there in the first place because apparently, the conditions of space affects her physiology in a way that it was keeping her disease at bay temporarily. Plus, the Japanese writing underneath the captions gives it an anime feel to it since it is anime. You basically summarized everything in the best way possible. Thank you, liamphibia.

I guess it’s more align to PG 13+ specifically which is why we don’t really see her actually getting shot when Shadow flashbacks to that scene but rather instead a crystal visual and a piece resembling the fatal blow to her demise 🤔

I love how they showed the moon is still blown up since adventure 2. That confirms that Takashi Iizuka’s statement is true the destroyed side of the moon was just facing away this whole time.

I still think it's stupid. They could've said that the Chaos Control from both Super Sonic and Super Shadow to return the Ark back in position fixed the Moon with the energy wave that came from it.
The Chaos Emeralds are capable of doing it.
I just assumed that this animation took place between Heroes and Shadow 2005.
@@viruschris3160 thats true and thats the head cannon that I used. However I think its fine overall. Most fans are pretty pumped about Sonic Teams attention to detail.
I'm so glad Sonic Team is starting to take the franchise seriously again! I hope this is just the beginning and they go on to create a full series or movie in this style. We really need it!
i would love to see future games have their cutscenes be animated with an artstyle like this that would be so cool
I don't see them doing that, some other company would do it but we don't want other company we want they, but they made game this is to hype is for the game, they don't need to do it but I'm glad they did.

@@leopardtud1786 Not Sonic Team, they don't have the budget for it without sacrifice the game, if we are ever going to get this will be by another company and even then, they are the ones that to approach Sega, I prefer have this small things and a good game, that have a movie/serie but a game that sucks.

Shadow really had a nightmare and just decided to ignore Sonic's birthday.
Assuming this IS the Shadow from base gens.
Has to be since he has the yellow chaos emerald, and you can only obtain it thru beating shadow in base gens

Him being post Frontiers Shadow would create a literal paradox since he ends up at Sonic's party at the end of Sonic Gens.
I just hope they don't pull a "and Shadow forgot everything that happened between the end of his campaign and the end of Sonic's" just to justify why Shadow didn't act upon the straight up Forces/Frontiers spoilers he saw in his campaign.

@@MaxusFox23 I have thought about that paradox myself. With that said, a counter argument can be made against this being Gens Shadow and not him after Frontiers. Shadow’s side of the game has him going through Sunset Heights, a level set during the events of SONIC FORCES. If this is Gens Shadow going through the campaign, then why doesn’t he warn anybody or do anything about their soon-to-be future? One way or another, there’s going to be some kind of plot hole. That’s why I’m still unsure on what timeline this Shadow is in before he gets sucked into the white world.

The animation and illustration style used to depict Maria's death is so powerful that even when it's off-screen, you still feel the chills and the haunting sensation😱😔😢👩🩵

I think that shot of maria as shadow is falling basically confirms that shadows last memory of maria was witnessing her getting shot in the heart and that's the most depressing thing to realize
A cracked moon with its pieces making a ring around it is the coolest set piece a franchise could have and Sonic Team just REFUSE to make it a permanent part of the games
i love how silent that emerl fight is, no backing track, just the sounds of trading blows and whirring machinery. Its perfect (though i wouldnt have been mad if it was a smidge longer).
My ONLY complaint is I wish it was longer, like a full 10 minute episode. SEGA, a new Sonic anime when??

Btw, for those wondering why he has a yellow emerald instead of his usual green one, it’s a reference to his Sonic Generations Rival Fight where he guards that damn 4th Chaos Emerald, which is yellow like in the animation.
Which in extention, is a reference to the fact the yellow emerald is the one that tails made a fake of.
When maria shouts "shadow, remember !" There's a funny hole in the chest area.......😢
Did anyone else notice the fact that some of the scenes in this were also in the 90s style Gerald’s journal commercial.
Had to wait till 1am but I’d say it was worth it. Overall loved this episode, do wish there was more Shadow and Maria interaction. But aside that, HOLY MOLY the looks, the sounds and music, the emotions, the voice acting, the battle with Emerl and the nightmare sequence at the end… so Damn good! ❤🖤
I knew this would be peak and I was STILL blown away. This is the first proper Maria content that isn't a silent flashback or some retelling of her death, and she's GREAT.

Something I love about this is that it doesnt feel like Sonic and I mean that in the best way possible. Felt like I was watching a really good anime reminded me of the Future Trunks DBZ Special with how seriously it played out. This is the Sonic us fans have wanted and I cannot wait to see what they have cooking

Since no one is mentioning this in their reactions or people in the comments, allow me!
Shadow at the end asks himself:
“Could have he survived? No! That can’t be… I need answers…”
When that type of question is asked, it’s foreshadowing.
Foreshadowing that Doom might still be alive!
If he survived, that would change so much in the Sonic lore!!
Well… maybe not all that much.
But it’d be so cool if we get to find out how and where he’s been hiding!
Side note:
Yes, we know he’s alive, I’m talking about exactly HOW he managed to stay that way!
Honestly, he might’ve had a backup form within Shadow.
I mean we all know he gets these dark and weird power-ups in the game soooo lol!

They really cooked with this animation.. and the way how I got chills throughout everything, every action, moment, scene the impact of it all just hits and thats why I love this so much!

I think that the implication across this episode AND the third movie is that while Maria got merc’d, Gerald might have actually survived his execution. And no, I don’t think he’s a hallucination in the movie. I think they will use him in the movie as a way to try to tame down Shadow because of their shared grief over Maria. I don’t really mind the retcon, because Sonic lore has NEVER been consistent across the board. Did 06 happen or not? What about Sonic Riders or anything else in this series? It’s already confusing, but let’s see if the new material while provide fun and creative clarity.
This animation is just so pretty. What I wouldn't do for a full series of this caliber.

I love that they kept the fact the Shadow REQUIRES AN EMERALD to use his abilities when he blasts the tree. Still a little miffed that some of his lore came after SA2, but glad they stayed committed.
The lesson here is keep having Ian Flynn as a writer

There's something gut bustingly hilarious about not being able to comment on an animation where a child and an old man get shot to death because the channel that uploaded it considers it kids content.
the pain in Shadow's voice when he screamed out her name after she got shot had me full on crying and it still gets me every time 😭😭😭
It took me a hot minute to realize this is 2D on 3D, but oh man do they use that to its fullest. Some of these camera movements and shots are absolutely gorgeous.
In games like Sonic Advanced 3 and Sonic Riders Zero Gravity, it shows Sonic’s world actually has TWO moons. Either an inconsistency or possibly the reason we never see the broken moon because it’s not the same one.
Sonic Prime also showed us it has five suns.

I enjoyed Shadow Dark Beginnings: Episode 1. It's cinematic and has Dragonball Z vibes in all the right ways.
Its official, they're cooking a 5 course, 5 Star meal.

I feel like people are not taking the "could he have survived" with enough seriousness, I mean it feels like a huge coincidence that the sonic movie Gerald survived and then they are hinting that this Gerald could have as well. Unless he is talking about Doom which he could be.
I had that same feeling it was a fake out too, but immediately realized it wouldn't make sense for MARIA to be on the lead while escaping from the raid, especially after reading the Shadow manga.
You all simply got a "fake out" and a "parallel" mixed up here.

Jason Griffith will always be my favorite voice for Shadow, but I'm starting to finally come around to Kirk's Shadow. Both here and in the Lego ads have shown that he now knows and understands who Shadow is as a character.

I'd already figure out about the "fake-out" based on one thing : every other time they show the hallway scene it was always shows shadow pulling on maria trying to get her to safety. Here it was maria the one pulling.
This made me feel the same when Across the Spiderverse ended. I NEED MORE GRRRRAAAAHHHHHH

wait, just noticed, fun detail, Shadow has the yellow chaos emerald, and in Gens, Sonic gained the yellow emerald by defeating Shadow
So that red mist sequence ends with what looks like hands reaching out to grab him…is this black doom? Time eater? Unknown 3rd villain???
Like everyone else said, the visuals were great and the so were the plot points. I wish, though, that it was longer (as most people probably do) so that those plot points could be fleshed out. That would've allowed Shadow and Maria to talk more (why does she love the Earth's beauty so much thst she'd risk her health to look at it? What specifically does she hope to do when she returns to Earth? How does Maria feel about Shadow's comment that he might not have a place on Earth?), that would've allowed Shadow and Gemerl to fight longer (assuming they had the budget for that), and it would've allowed Shadow's assumption that Gerald might be alive to come naturally (he kind've just randomly assumes that's a possiblity because he had a weird nightmare underneath the Ark).
Do you think this Emerald, Shadow is using, is a fake one? What I mean is that Shadow needs Chaos Emerald to be able to use his Chaos Powers, but that would mean either Sonic or Eggman would need to battle him every time they would collect them, which in turn would make him invested in what they will do with them. But if he would have fake one, then he can use Chaos Powers and there would be no issues lore wise when they are needed.
Ex. Imagine Shadow is chilling around with his Chaos Emerald and then it flies off to Starfall Island. Would you be just "Meh, whatever" or go after it? Remember, the world outside camera frame exists and doesn't sleep.
8:21 when I saw that part in the game for the first time as a kid, it gave me actual CHILLS. At the time i didn't even know hegot the death penalty cause they made it seemed like he died in his cell. But this scene brought back those feelings and amplified it to a horrific level which suits it very well
If you think about it, this is the first time (aside from Prime and maybe X) that we see Shadow's combat style. The thing I love about these is that they show how the characters fight currently outside of the games. Knuckles is the type that only needs one hit usually. Shadow's combat is fast, precise, and makes good utilization of the Spindash to mix his opponents as opposed to Knuckles who only uses it to close distance.
One detail I really like is that Shadow has the yellow Chaos Emerald. Which is not only the one he had in Generations, but it's also the infamous "Damn Fourth Chaos Emerald." I love this short. I hope it's the start to Shadow being a good character again.
They gave Shadow the yellow chaos emerald you fight in for in base generations.

All ima say is that we NEED! A full series anime with this level of quality. Sega should adapt some of the comics stories into it
You know, with this animation and how Sonic speed was portrayed in Frontiers, you can certainly see they are being influenced a lot by the movies. Sonic and Shadow now have the electricity effect whenever they use their speed or powers, and even the glowing effect on their eyes.
Anyone notice that they seem to be leaning into the same sort of electricity effects that're in the movies? Especially when Shadow's punching and when he runs at the end. I like it!
I do wish it was a bit longer but him glad we're getting 3 episodes at least each one being probably 5 minutes and despite how short it was , it was genuinely amazing!
