  • In this episode of the Scrap Metal Replica I show how to forge a long 50 cm long battle knife. I based on the find from Gnezdovo. To forge it I used different types of wrought iron, Bessemer steel, and medium and high carbon steel, all of these materials I colected on scrap yards.

yes, i use new anvil for some time. It is french type 200 kg anvil, it looks nice it is heavy but for my purpose it is not perfect. The face of the anvil is not straight, also hardy hole is french type so i can not use my hardy tools with this anvil. I am going to change it for another in the future.

@@officinaferraria i also have a french Firminy 255 kilo it was advertised as a rihno anvil , the face is also not straight it has like a hump near the round horn and in the middle its like a slope , and when u go more to the back horn there its like a little concave so i had to grind alot to make it more straight , i payd alot for it so i had to learn to like it so now im used to it , do you kno why they were made like that ? I was thinking maybe for armour ? I dont kno because i cant find info about it

About this lump on french anvil, I think it was used, and I use it for maximum efficiency when forging down very thick bars when forging tools, the overall shape seems to ease the work of" taillanderie", toolcrafting

Great hand work. What was comic in this vid was your mobile sticking out of your pocket while you were working, it looked so inappropriate - blacksmith and mobile phone - of course these days everyone has got one :D

Think when they get that big its ok to call them a sword :)
Sadly no wrought iron where I am any more, there's been blacksmiths continuously in the area for about close to 200 years so they stole it all and made stuff to cut down trees with it.

Fantastic work as always, you make the welds look so easy! Could you tell the thickness of the back of the knife? It looks very sturdy. Thank you for the video!

so you also make handles or you send the blades to other shop for them?

Sometimes i make a handles my own but usually i do not have time for that. This knife is for museum exhibition and handle in this case is not necessary.
