"Uncommon"? not much is new here. Make the book free? Make the book discounted for a time? Freebooksy, Bookbub, Amazon promotions, Goodreads promotions, whatever: what's new here?
If you have an audience already, sure, there's all sorts of things you can do. There are marketing conferences you can attend to get ideas (ive done so), it's all ****ing great, and none of it matters if you don't have an audience to begin with.
My ass is uncommon, LOL, so annoying. you and a dozen other "experts". Click bait. What's uncommon is that you're on TH-cam and they're usually on Instagram.

To me, the most interesting tip is the first one. I usually like to keep big things a secret because I believe that if you tell many people your project may go wrong. It sounds silly, but in my house, I was always taught that. Now I can air my big project out so people can be aware of it. Thank you, Pat! Great video.

Fabiola García Morales+ Do you mean wait until you've actually finished your book before you tell people about it? I intuitively agree with you. It probably depends on the kind of book you are writing. Self help would work OK the way he is saying -but literature???

Love this video Pat! I'd say your tip #1 is one of the biggest mistakes that most new authors don't follow. They work hard on their book, and then, after hitting publish, they ask themselves "Hmm..how should I market this." Creating a plan the day you start writing not only helps you to sell more books upon launch but also helps you write a better book too - marketing isn't just a sales push, it's research too and understanding how to best serve your market. Knowing that, you'll create a better book for them.

Hi Kindlepreneur, my best marketing tool is to add the link of my poetry book: www.amazon.com/dp/B083TRSWWG here so you can read it, and have fun with it. And "Poetry" Do Sells.

your videos have zero dislikes or very few. I believe it's cause your giving real advice, not trying to sell or push anything on your audience, you connect so well with them. That's why you appeal to me.

These are so good! Two years ago I had that momentum built up so well! I started writing a children's book with a goal to write, illustrate and self-publishing a book each month for the 100dayproject. I did most of the first book in the first three weeks! It was so exciting! Then some things came up and I wasn't able to finish it. Then many other things happened and I couldn't get my focus back on it to finalize it. I was so sad that I missed it. Now I'm back! I told people that this year I'm going to finish my open-ended projects and mentioned this particular book. I see the same people responding that did before! In the last 3 day I got as far as submitting it to KDP and I will be getting my proof copy soon. I can't wait to see how things go with it!
I definitely see why letting people see it first and write reviews, or set a starting price low, such a good idea! I will definitely do that! :)
And I agree, sharing the progress is really helpful! :) People naturally enjoy behind the scenes and then are more likely to buy a copy.

Yep, reviews + free promo are really helpful.
My client's book (also a children's book) ranked 9th in General Humorous Fiction category when we did this.
Also, doing this within the first week from the publish date is crucial.
      Good luck🤗

Great video! And a little side benefit of Tip #1 is that you'll be less likely to quit this project half way because you've publicly committed to writing it (because book writing is hard and most authors I know go through those thoughts of ... should I write this? will anyone read this? who am I to write a book?). And Tip #3 - love that you're asking people to share something fun vs just asking them to share your book with their audience. Way better for starting a conversation as you noted. Love your channel and your podcast! Thank you.

  • @BunnyKramer

Pat .... yep ... again with a total winner! I'll for sure be using Tip #1 ... Promote Early. I already have niche FB groups with 13k, 15k, and 25k members interested in the exact topic I'm writing on. In fact it's because of the questions and challenges they bring to the groups that I'm writing this! Yes maybe that should be a no-brainer? But not until you SAID THIS did I realize ... oh yeah duh ... let them know what I'm working on AND that I'm doing this specifically FOR THEM!
THANK YOU, PAT for another extremely valuable video!

These are super good tips, Pat - thank you. I've gotta say, I especially think #3 is brilliant & know from personal experience that you do this extremely well. Building the marketing directly INTO your book is not only easy to do, it's mega helpful to your reader/listener (if it's an audiobook) by adding value for them, and it's also a great promotional opportunity for you as the author. A total win-win! Thank you for another wonderful video loaded with awesomeness, Pat - you ROCK!

    • @patflynn

Thanks Tanya! I think a book should be more than just a person reading on a page, but taking action and sharing that action with others. It doesn't have to get super fancy, but a little thinking ahead of time can make the book, dare I say, fly even higher. Haha! #dadjokes

I think the Street Team is crucial. Love what you said about giving ownership to others. They will naturally WANT to share the book with others if they are invested in some way. If they see the value of the contents or even just believe in you, they'll be honored to be invited to help, and will likely become your raving fans who can't wait to share what you're doing. Thanks Pat! Let's get lunch. I live down the street. :)

The first tip was most interesting to me- these days people commonly speak about keeping things to yourself because you don't know if someone has bad intentions or ill-will towards you. So this approach was actually very refreshing and makes lots of sense if you just look at the growth of Influencer culture and how it came about. Thanks!

Hi Pat! First of all, THANK YOU for this video! I really needed this right now! Interestingly, I already have a large following, and books about to be published.. just needed help on promo and marketing ideas. I took notes on all 9 tips and plan to use them all at the right time. I plan to start #6 first - start recording podcasts now to coincide when the book is available for sale (or just before). # 5 Create a book club website - perfect idea! We can do that quickly. I especially love the idea of building in ways INSIDE THE BOOK, to get people involved LIVE via social media: twitter, fb posts, hastag etc. Also the kindle promo is a great idea too. So first thing I AM doing, is develop my plan to implement these strategies!
    Thank you again!! 🤗

#InLikeFlynn I like tip#1 to talk about your book even before you launch it. I just learned of the 50% rule that says 50% of your time should be spent writing your book and 50% on marketing your book. I understand now that even while you are writing your book you can at the same time start marketing it. I didn't do this for my first books that i published on Amazon because I was shy talking about that project since I'm so new to writing books. I'll do it better now. Thanks, Pat!

Your idea about audience engagement jumps out to me the most. I've got a children's book coming out (geared towards 10-year-olds, called "5th Grade Challenge"). It's full of new vocabulary words to boost their language skills, and at the end of the chapter there are reflection questions that are meant to be read between parents and children. For audience engagement, I'll ask parents to answer these questions themselves (on camera). Thanks for the idea and the advice.

Thanks for the advice - my book, THE WRETCHED, on Amazon, was submitted with little fanfare by my publisher - they kind of published a day or two after the contract was signed with zero hype. I understand, they are a small publisher, but I was surprised. Now the marketing has fallen all on my shoulders and I'm trying everything I can to get into the hands of readers - this video was very helpful. I like a lot of the tips, but believe I'll focus on the last few the most and see where that takes me. Wish me luck!

This is amazing advice and I must confess I have fallen short on a lot of the tips you have given. Especially #1. I worked really hard on my book and then got in out on Amazon Kindle, but now I am in the "dark" in a way since I did not utilize marketing before putting out my book. I missed out on that hype that can come with an impending debut. So, besides working on #1 and expanding my marketing to try and get readers to my book, I am also going to work on making an event. I think that would be great, even if it is only in the community in which I live. One step at a time. However, since watching this video, I have a better sense of what to do for my sequel. Thanks Pat!

You have given me some excellent tips these thank you. I will apply some of them to my existing books but my new book, living on Mars that I am writing I am going to create a vlog to show people how I go through the process of writing it, also this will promote my book on how to write and publish your book for free.

Great ideas! I never thought before about creating a FB group to allow people to 'watch' the process as I go along with it's creation.

    Hi Pat,
    thank you for these tips!!:)
I think that the one that I found the most interesting was the "Built in Marketing". I think that's a really cool idea! It brings the whole experience to another dimension!:) I think that the engagement produced from this strategy definitely brings the reader closer to the writer and as you mentioned will be a trigger for other people to get to know the book!:)))
    Really cool!:DD
    Thank you again!!:)
PS: I'm writting an autobiography, and a marketing strategy that I'm trying to test is to use the cover which is a very simple photo of mine as my profile picture in every platform that I'm in and even as my water mark on my videos here on TH-cam, with that I am hopping to be writting the image of my book into people's minds, so that whenever it comes out it will "somehow" familiar to them:)
I don't know if this is going to work, but once there was a guy who use to paint a very simple design on the streets of the city where I am from, but he did it everywhere! and think that he even paid or created a group of people to write his design everywhere they could as well, so it seriously became ingrained in a lot of people's brains... Seriously he literally became a urban legend with his design!!! and that's pretty much what I'm trying to do by using my book cover everywhere; to somehow be more familiar to the people once the book is released, so that they would have a sense of I know this book from somewhere... and hopefully they'll actually buy it somehow being influenced by this familiar feeling... I don't know...Something like that. Now let's see if it works!:)))
    PS: Thank you again!!!:DDD

Just published my book The Happiness secret on Amazon last week - shame this video wasn't out then! Will implement the tip about giving my Kindle version away for free, at the moment I'm offering free PDF versions and given a few of those away, but the Kindle idea is great. In fact, all of your tips are great! =D

Pat, this is brilliant - the best video I’ve seen on the subject! I’ve just finished the first draft of my first book, for launch in June. I’ve been planning my marketing from day one - including building my launch team (my cheerleaders ☺️). I’m even being interviewed on local radio this week 😍😮 I’ll now be including your strategies and have subscribed to your channel. Thank you! 😊👋🏼

Great advice Pat. I will be using the promote in advance tip. for my next book. I want to finish my book and have the editing done. Then I will look to get some endorsements from people in my genre. My first book was an award-winning book and introduced myself to the world. Now that I'm a published author, I hope to build on the success of my first book. My audience has been clamoring for another book.
