I’m stunned at the workmanship, attention to detail, the fun you’re having with these rebuilds and the inclusion of prices. I’ve never seen any other refurbishment specialist on TH-cam with this approach to a project. Subscribed.
I'm doing a mk1 escort and the panels are shocking, the panels I have are magnum apparently they are the best... wouldn't like to see what the others are like, enjoying g the build guys
Big respect for all the work you do. Very unfortunate about the rust on the panels. On the panel fitment note though, if you remove the entire floor without putting in some kind of X-member between the B pillars to hold the body together I am fairly certain you've induced twisting and bending into the chassis. With that said, I don't think a single old ford came out straight from the factory so the pressed panels is like Russian roulette in fitment.
If there's surface rust under the primer on the outside isn't it going to be in places where you can't sand back like inside the doors and arches? Plus, great work by the way.
Can't believe how much work has gone in to this! Great to see the escorts getting the love they deserve. Where are you guys based and how much would it cost roughly if I were to bring you guys my shell and basically get you to redo everything as you guys have done?
ODD Autos: I didn’t expect to see a reply for the ‘ball park figure’ question but credit to you for your response, it’s good to have something to aim for when planning a restoration project. I’ve asked for quotations on any number of parts of a Mk 2 rebuild and I’ve never had a straight answer, best I’ve had is a sharp intake of breath sucked through the teeth...
Awsome job guys ive got the mk2 4 door rally pack in orange that im doing. They are still a heap cheaper here in Australia but on the rise. Just hard getting parts shipping cost kills me just over a grand for the upper bulkhead. Carnt wait for the next video. Do you have any contacts that i could have for parts
5.02 to 5.19minutes in the video is putting etch all over the shell before the high build primer. Epoxy was put inside all the Pannels where it’s hard to get paint as explained in part 1 at 6.01minutes
My dad left me his 1980 1600 sport. He wanted to resort it but never got the chance.... im going to make sure it gets done and with as little body filler as possible. In south africa. Ha ha ha younare lucky you didn't find chicken mesh stuff with newspaper in there covered on filler
ODD Autos not really, many panel gaps to correct etc but all in all their not bad really. not much difference really when you already have to put time into getting after market panels to fit properly like you have had to do. new shell comes complete. boot, doors, wings, bonnet are the only things that needs gaps adjusting just the same that youve done on yours, so not that different. youve had to sand blast shell, put loads of hours into the repair which time is money. so £4k plus buying the car and the labour. wouldve been cheaper to buy a mega rust bucket for plates and log book and buying a new shell. just a thought
I looked into it and was told by the seller it’s £7000 for the shell as is or £14,500 for a shell that’s been put on a jig and straightened. Because in his words “they are made in China, what do you expect”. So this really was the cheaper option.
I was doing a few cars for a panel supplier in the 90's up at their place I noticed them taking labels off some panels asking why , some bodyshops would not take some makers panels because of fit , my logic was it's non genuine so a bad fit your job as a panel beater to make it fit , I did a mk1 Jag for a customer Martin Robey wing they were dreadful also did a Lancia Montecarlo hand made panels the were the worst things I have ever tried to fit door skins did not match the wing or quarter the quarter did not fit the door skin I fitted and neither did the wing , I gave the guy a price on the panels fitting he refused to pay any more blew my brains out on that worked extra 2 weeks for nothing , owned a few early Escorts great fun cars .

Absolutely fabulous job guys very impressed, what’s a rough ball park figure of a job of this scale??
Cheers! Roughly it was about £6k in paint and parts and then took the two of us about 3 months solid.

Do you have a video about making the platform used under the car.
Can't wait for the update...
Cheers! I’ll get straight on with the next vid.
Hi, just discovered this channel and subscribed. Brilliant work. What company makes your spray booth? When are you going to do a Capri?
Hopefully after this Escort, I’ve got 2 mk1 v6 Capri’s sat in the garden ready. Both full of filler just to make Keith happy lol
The booth is a Blowtherm, we got it second hand and refurbed it ourselves. It’s a great booth to work with.
Have you used higgins panels
excellent
Thank you buddy 👍

That’s mega bucks for a bulkhead, but yes long way to send it. Wonder if SA is cheaper to get parts sent from to you?
What rust treatment did you use please
Good vid
Thank you Josh 👍
So now you should be telling us where not to buy escort panels from.
A lot of companies just ramp up the price coz it’s an escort. Same metalwork for a Capri or similar is half the price.
I know, massively overpriced . Hoping a Capri is cheaper, I’ve got 2 mk1 Capri’s at home that need doing!
The panels were from SA too? 😳
Can i just ask what grit sand paper you are using to remove the paint on the new panels when ye came across the rust?😊 thanks in advance.
Hiya, just used 80grit to get it off. Then put a little bit of paint on rust remover which sucks out any rust that’s remaining.
They the Higgins panels ?
They were off eBay, I’ll check 👍
They're Higgins panels. Can tell by the colour of the primer
after all that work sanding back to bare metal did you epoxy the shell? I didn't see any etch applied before the high build primer

This one must of had a lorry load of filler in it ha ha. Good luck with your dads car, hope you get it done nice 👍. Keep me informed on the fun.
Have you said where you got the panels from?
Got all of the panels off eBay.
I've been waiting for an update on this. How much Gravitex did it take?
Took 6 bottles, paid £44.65 for them of eBay and it came with a free Shultz gun 👍.
I'd still be tempted to slap a big bhp diesel in it 😉
Ha ha transit powered !
To be honest guys, I'd hit the underside with dinitrol rubber underbody overpaintable shutz. I'm doing my 1974 Cosworth YB Viva with it!
Yes used that on my mk2 golf. It’s good stuff but nearly double the price and very similar.
When can we expect the next video?
All goes well it’ll be this Sunday 🤞
All did not go well lol
Bugger. I well ill be waiting. Just bought a mk2 in australia here and its got a few rust repairs. Not as much as yours though
£4414 😱😱😱 u can get a new shell for £7000 lol
But then you have to spend a lot more to get it straight I think.
