If you like the solo at the end of this song, I can't be the first person to suggest the live version of this song from the "Pulse Concert" from 1994.

Yes he should definitely watch this song live from the Pulse Concert in 1994. That’s hands down the best guitar solo of all time and I can’t get enough of it.

You are just beginning on a true life changing experience when you step into the rock era from 1968 through 1980.
Tommy by the WHO... was great, the band Yes, Deep Purple, Johnny and Edgar Winter, Uriah Heep, ....the list will take you months to get through maybe years .. Jethro Tull,
op rock bands of the 70s

Syd Barrett was out of the band by 1968. Rodger Waters sings the verse, David Gilmour sings the chorus. Gilmour also plays the incredible solos.

It isn't "psychedelic", whatever that even is, it's beautiful, soul moving music. Comfortably numb, as I understand it is when you are so shattered, so low and broken,
nothing moves you, touches you. You're just an empty shell. 2 lines, 6 words maybe the saddest lines ever written "The child is grown. The dream is gone."

    • @kristinaveirum
      @kristinaveirum ปีที่แล้ว +1

This is actually what the song is about.
Roger Waters wrote the lyrics. While many people thought the song was about drugs, Waters claims it is not. The lyrics are about what he felt like as a child when he was sick with a fever. As an adult, he got that feeling again sometimes, entering a state of delirium, where he felt detached from reality. He told Mojo magazine (December 2009) that the lines, "When I was a child I had a fever/My hands felt just like two balloons" were autobiographical. He explained: "I remember having the flu or something, an infection with a temperature of 105 and being delirious. It wasn't like the hands looked like balloons, but they looked way too big, frightening. A lot of people think those lines are about masturbation. God knows why.
In a radio interview around 1980 with Jim Ladd from KLOS in Los Angeles, Waters said part of the song is about the time he got hepatitis but didn't know it. Pink Floyd had to do a show that night in Philadelphia, and the doctor Roger saw gave him a sedative to help the pain, thinking it was a stomach disorder. At the show, Roger's hands were numb "like two toy balloons." He was unable to focus, but also realized the fans didn't care because they were so busy screaming, hence "comfortably" numb. He said most of The Wall is about alienation between the audience and band.
Exploring further, Mojo asked Waters about the line, "That'll keep you going through the show," referring to getting medicated before going on-stage. He explained: "That comes from a specific show at the Spectrum in Philadelphia (June 29, 1977). I had stomach cramps so bad that I thought I wasn't able to go on. A doctor backstage gave me a shot of something that I swear to God would have killed a f---ing elephant. I did the whole show hardly able to raise my hand above my knee. He said it was a muscular relaxant. But it rendered me almost insensible. It was so bad that at the end of the show, the audience was baying for more. I couldn't do it. They did the encore without me.

The song is about one of the band members getting hurt before a show they had to do. The Dr. gave him a strong pain killer so he go on stage. The euphoria he was experiencing reminded him af a time he was very sick with high fever. Watch this live Pulse 1994. The best guitar solo ever.

    • @AD270479
      @AD270479 ปีที่แล้ว

Bud he never got hurt, Roger Waters had stomach issues & was just totally exhausted from being on tour while very unwell. The Dr gave him an injection, but he has no idea what was in it. He thinks it was a mix of steroids & heavy painkillers mixed together. Then as you say it spaced him out & reminded him of the drugs he was gave as a child one time, that done similar to him. Think the gig was in Philadelphia.

Syd Barrett was one of the founding members of Pink Floyd back in 1965, but left the music business due to his mental health issues. David Gilmour & Roger Waters took up the mantle of continuing the band after Sid left... Sadly it didn't last & they eventually split. The album Dark Side of the Moon has consistently been voted as one of "the greatest rock album of all time" and is still one of the best selling albums around the world since it's release in 1973.

It’s all part of the entire Wall “opera,” if you will. The protagonist is a disaffected, alienated famous person assaulted on all sides by people who want something from him (forcing him to put up a “wall” to protect himself). The lyrics of the song pretty adequately tell the story: he’s at maximum “out of it-ness,” and someone’s trying to get him boosted and ready to perform with an unknown substance of their own. Yet he does see things clearly in his head and it’s pretty plain he’s in his own world that has internal coherence but has no able relation to the outside world.

    • @loadedorygun
      @loadedorygun ปีที่แล้ว +1

But to maybe address your conjecture, drugs here are the symptom, not the cause, and they’re also part of his “healing” or coping which in the case of anti depressants can zombie you out like this too. So the drugs are definitely at play, but he comes into this with a far more complex set of issues of abandonment, impermanence and emotional abuse and suffocation.

This album cover is for their Dark Side of the Moon, this song is from a different album of theirs called The Wall. Welcome to Pink Floyd’s music, you will never be the same musically ✌️Roger Waters on the first part vocally then David Gilmour (guitarist extraordinaire) sings the other section… there is no pain you are receding…Syd Barrett had left the band much earlier

Pink Floyd is more than just hearing music, it is a whole trippy experience that you feel, both in your mind & soul. That feeling can't fully be grasped or understood after only hearing one or two songs. Their library of music is vast & another rabbit hole to explore and get lost in. Pink Floyd is my husband top favorite band over Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, & other legendary groups. RUSH is his #2 favorite group. When I was a kid, I liked the song "Another brick in the wall" as it was played constantly on the radio. Plus everyone knows that song, even if they've only heard it in passing... My favorite now are "Wish you were here", "Time", "Money", and "Comfortably Numb". One track you must check out is "The Great Gig in the Sky" - the vocals are off the charts!

  • @montag4516

There are two lead vocalists on this track. Roger Waters does the spoken-like verses (and wrote the lyrics), David Gilmour sings lead on the airier, chorus verses.
Std Barrett was the original creative force of Pink Floyd, but was departed from the band by around 1968 due to his own personal conflicts.

Not Syd Barrett. He was a founding member but never part of the band once they became world famous. That's lyricist and bassist Rodger Waters on the verses. World renowned lead guitarist and vocalist David Gilmour with that smooth voice singing the chorus and playing the solos.
Pink Floyd is all about the vibe. Stopping for extended minutes at a time doing research and interpreting the lyrics takes you completely out of the song. Why not listen to the song FIRST and then do your research an opinions? I think you and your audience would appreciate it a lot more.

There's obviously debate as to just what this song is about, but I think that just like any art medium, you can give it whatever meaning you want. To me, this song represents my depression and anxiety and the medication and therapy that I use to manage it. With my medication, I also become 'comfortably numb'.

If i was stranded on a desert island and had one album to listen to, it would be Dark Side of the Moon. Listen to the album in it's entirety with no breaks. . It's psychedelic, blues, and classic rock all rolled in to one. Breathe, Time, Great Gig in the Sky, and Us and Them are just a few of the highlights. Its a short album, about 45minutes, but its the best 45 minutes you'll ever spend with a set headphones on. There's a reason it spent 14 years on Billboard's top albums chart.

You really need to listen to it from start to finish at least once to get the most out of it. It's basically a play or a story - although the songs stand on their own it makes more sense in order. They had a show 'The Wall' when they toured the album in the 70's which was as much a theater show as music - the songs were played in order and they had a giant wall made up of bricks that was built up throughout and then destroyed. This was redone and updated in 2011. The Berlin Wall gave the idea for there being a wall, although it is used here metaphorically as a symbol of alienation - specifically the alienation that Pink Floyd felt at that time from some of the public, although other similar ideas of alienation/separation are used - war, education (pupils/teachers)

This comes about 3/4 of the way thru the story. ALL of the songs have transitions between songs......from one song to the next. Roger Waters is the bassist and the first vocalist. The guy with the Ethereal voice is David Gilmour who was also the lead guitarist and plays guitar in this song! Then you have Richard Wright the keyboardist and sometimes vocalist and Nick Mason the drummer. Syd Barrett due to mental issues brought on by too much LSD or psychedelic drugs was left off the band in 1968 so he's not singing here at all. He was one of the founders of the band and even though he was dropped he was well taken care of by the band the rest of his life!!

This was inspired by bassist Roger Waters being taken ill on tour, so to get him on stage he was given an injection but it made his hands swell up - referred to in the lyrics - and guitar playing was difficult. The Wall, along with the other PF 70's albums are sonic works of art and should each one be listened to in one sitting all the way through as the tracks flow together as one. If you thought this was insane, try watching the Pulse 1994 live version (in the gig encore). Its unbelievably good and arguably the greatest guitar solo ever. The Wall is about a rock star's fall and there is a movie version, starring Bob Geldof as 'Pink'. In 2005 at Live 8, he achieved the impossible - getting PF reunited with Waters for what would be their final gig.

Two different vocalists. Not Syd Barrett, he left PF several years before this was released. The first voice was the lycicist, Roger Waters. The second singer in this song is the and guitarist is David Gilmour, who took over from Syd, after taking his place at some apprearances in the early years, when Syd's mental instability caused him to be unreliable. Others will tell you the story behind the song. It's part of a concept album, so the meaning becomes clearer on hearing the rest of the album.

What you said about Zeppelin, charts, and fade outs, the same goes for Pink Floyd. Most progressive rock has an element of storytelling to it to some degree. Pink Floyd usually crafted concept albums where there was a central theme or story to the music and lyrics where each song lead into the next and every song was related to the rest on the album in some way. The album (The Wall) this was on was considered a rock opera which tells a complete story and is widely regarded as the best rock opera of all time. Their album Dark Side Of the Moon is wisely regarded as the the best progressive rock album of all time with their album Wish You Were Here being in the top 5 of all time. All of these bands who create this type of music is considered Album Oriented Rock which is why there are very few singles and charted singles by this type of band. Picking a song randomly from a Floyd album can have a jarring beginning or end as most songs transitioned into the next, and its like randomly reading a chapter from the middle of a book without knowing the context of said chapter or book. Great on their own, but elevated 100x over when taken in as a whole. Welcome to the rabbit hole, my friend.

Pink Floyd is on a whole other level, they are Legendary, an Experience. their music takes the listener on a cerebral journey, floating away beyond the stratosphere.
The album cover with the prism and the light going through it, is Pink Floyds 1973 "Dark Side of the Moon" album. Ironically enough this song, Comfortably Numb, isn't on the "Dark Side of the Moon" album, it's on their 1979 The Wall concept double album. Lol!
The Comfortably Numb story is part of a much bigger story that's told by that 1979 concept double album-Album, "The Wall". A concept album tells a story and is meant to be listened to in one sitting, or one side at a time.
The Wall story is about a fictional Rock Star, "Pink", inspired by a Roger Waters and a fan experience at one of their shows.
The best thing to do to understand the story is just google,... Pink Rock Star/The Wall
Syd Barrett was forced by to leave the band by 1968 because of drug and mental health issues, some say probably related. Barrett consumed massive amounts of LSD, and other mind-altering drugs, that destroyed his brain.
His good friend, and friend of the band, David Gilmour, took over for Syd as guitarist and lead singer full time by the end of 1968.
Gilmour had been filling in for Syd on many, many occasions a couple of years prior to Syds departure from the band. Speaking of Gilmour, there a Pink Floyd fan requirement when listening to their music,...
..... never, ever, EVER, pause or talk during a David Gilmour solo.

Both fade-ins and fade outs, with the latter being much more common, happened fairly frequently in rock music love that era. In fact some of the best little bits I've ever heard are when it's a long fade out instead of a short one and the only way to know this stuff is you're playing it on the record at top volume in your car or on your stereo system or nowadays perhaps in your Bluetooth headphones, and you have to have the patience to let it run all the way to the end. One great example is the song lessons from the huge breakout Rush album 2112. It's one of the individual Standalone songs on side B of the record album and Alex Lifeson is just absolutely wailing on the outro. And if you hold on long enough you hear him go even crazier..
Fading out at the end is really more of an aesthetic choice. Obviously live everything is going to have a definite ending but on a record album where you can really create moods, some songs are just better Suited for having a big Climax and then a dramatic ending. And others just take you to this other plane and they don't want to let it go you ride out on that plane basically.

The Pulse version is identical in nature to the performance of Free Bird in Oakland. The guitar solo is better.
I'd say the standard rock guitar solos are Stairway to Heaven live at Madison Square Garden, Free Bird live in Oakland and Comfortably Numb live from the Pulse concert.

You have taken a step into the rabbit hole that is Pink Floyd - here are some suggestions for best enjoyment.
Shine On Crazy Diamond (album version) is an artistic masterpiece. There are 2 parts that bookend the album Wish You Were Here. The song is actually listed as having 9 parts which can be thought of in the same way as you might think of movements of a classical piece of music. Originally was to be one whole album side but was split in two. Love the instrumental beauty of this song, especially the saxophone.
The song is in part an ode to their departed band member Syd Barrett who had a mental breakdown. The story goes that he actually showed up in the studio while they were recording the song and was not initially recognized because he had changed so much (shaved his eyebrows etc). Here is the first 5 parts of the Shine On You Crazy Diamond.
    th-cam.com/video/9pkh8zi_eic/w-d-xo.html
    Parts 6-9
    th-cam.com/video/wE2GZ2Vpqjo/w-d-xo.html
The second piece you should listen to and watch is the “live” version of Echos from a “concert” movie they did. The Live in Pompei version of Echoes - I think you will really love this experience. It is part of a movie they made - recorded in and around the ancient Roman amphitheater in Pompeii, Italy. It is “live” but the amphitheater has no one watching except for the crew (and I guess some kids that snuck in).

Of course, this iconic album cover is for one of the greatest album of all times, 'The Dark Side Of The Moon', which you need to listen to in its entirety AND use headphones or something. But, the track you listened to is not from the album. However, you DO want to listen to 'Pink Floyd's The Wall' also in its entirety. There's also a movie which will explain everything you listen to. It's a good movie, too, if a bit nightmarish.
I have found the Floyd is best on something to mellow you out and don't 'Bogart' that joint.

This is definitely a drug song. When you aren’t used to opioids and take them it can make you nauseous. I been clean 3 years but “comfortably numb” was the ideal state we aim for.. more than “getting well” but less than ODing.
When you take opioids the feeling of euphoria and being high happens because you are flooding your body with artificial chemicals. Not long after though you’re body realizes that there is an excess amount of a certain chemical and stops making your natural painkillers.
So when someone is in withdrawals it’s because there brain chemicals are out of wack and you don’t have natural endorphins to function. Everything hurts because of that, where even a blanket feels like sandpaper against your skin. That’s why it’s hard to go cold turkey and it’s called “getting well” because at that point they aren’t getting high but they still need it to be able to function.

The song is complex and has multiple meanings but part of it is a Rock star(Roger Waters in real life)--ill before a concert and a Doctor giving him some drug to get him thru the show. And kind of taking a swipe at the Doctor not caring too much about him...the other part is Roger Waters ill as a child.
