    I was 20 years old in 1988. I swear I can't remember a single friend that was into the Chili Peppers back then. They must of had a more regional following then.

      It was about that time I first heard of them. A dude in line at the Berklee cafeteria had their t-shirt. (The dude was Al Pahanish, an excellent drummer who would later play with Powerman 5000.)
