Magnaflow hi-flow cats (part #'s 49792, 49791), carbon air filter removed from air box, and the piping is 3.5" stainless steel from cats to twin 3" round tips
Hey Mounif, Removing cats will save you weight and increase volume/change tone, but keep in mind you won't be street legal and pass emissions. If that doesn't bother you, its just down to the new exhaust note, which some people like and some hate. It's higher pitched and MUCH raspier. I think it sounds cool, but youll inevitably get people who think it's "broken".
i live in oklahoma so they dont do emissions test here so i dont mind it but for personal im a fan of the deep rumble tone that v8 engines make i dont know about raspy tho its a v8 ... so will it sound raspy ?
+Mounif Habib it will sound VERY raspy. look up a decatted e90 or e92 BMW m3 and it will sound similar, but a bit deeper (larger displacement, lower redline)
I would not recommend removing the resonator, you get a lot more drone. Muffler delete and new tips alone are enough to free up some weight and improve sound dramatically
thanks for the reply, but I read on bmw forums that if you remove the muffler you lose low end torque but gain high end, have you experienced any of that and what do you think of removing both the muffler and resonators?
Arek Pikula Most of that is nonsense. You lose low end torque if you remove most of the piping that would reduce pressure; this matters a lot more if you have a turbo'd car (i.e. 535i). Removing the muffler hardly changes backpressure at all in the 4.4/4.8l e60's, and the 550i has a large amount of low end torque anyways (360 lb ft at relatively low RPM). Also, the stock muffler weighs like 55 lb. Removing it is probably the largest weight reduction you will ever make on the car. People spend $1200-1500 for a new hood that saves only 6-12 lb, and similar amounts on trunk lid, but nothing comes close to taking huge pieces of metal off and replacing them with lightweight components that are 1/5 the weight (at most). For an idea, look at part #16 here at the site below: www.bmwpartsunlimited.com/parts/2007/BMW/550i/Base?siteid=215368&vehicleid=188210§ion=EXHAUST%20SYSTEM&group=&subgroup=&component=&searchText=&startRow=21&maxRow=10 You're not removing just one muffler, you're removing two side by side mufflers, plus the piping, plus the various bits and pieces of hardware for the flap (solenoid activated on all 550i's). Now if you remove the resonator AND the muffler, you may lose a tiny bit of torque, and a great deal of weight, but you also will incur quite a bit more drone at most RPM's; if this doesn't bother you, so be it, but most people get annoyed eventually while driving around. 2k is going to be your most common RPM, and between 1500 and 2600 is where most of the drone happens.
Arek Pikula No problem. Best way to go would be to dyno it before and after. Although a lot of forum goers will theorycraft as to power loss and such, but I haven't found a single quantifiable report of power loss with a muffler delete. There is one guy on 5series.net that has done a HUGE amount of mods to his 550i, including an lsd/supercharger/full exhaust/etc. In any case, even IF you lose 2-4 lb of torque low end, you'll STILL be faster with a 55 lb weight reduction....period.
Hey, I have a question because I'm thinking about removing either the resonators or the muffler until i buy an exhaust system for my 550i, which one would you recommend? Btw it sounds nice
ANY muffler shop can do it. it's an extremely rudimentary job, just cut the 3.5" pipe going into stock muffler, remove stock muffler, small Y-pipe into two tips (I went with 2x 3", fits rear bumper cutout the best)
Hey Joel ! I got an 07 550i got the muffler delete on it .. And just like you said im not thinking about messing with the resonators but thinking about the deleting the cats what do you think ?
Of course you can chip it :). And what on earth do you mean? It's a fantastic car. Doesn't need much work. Do you track or drag it? If so, there are better cars for that. It's a good daily driver with enough power, great handling for a sedan of its size, and very few mechanical issues.
This was 5-6 years ago, but I believe it was a separate purchase that needed to be welded. If I recall correctly, getting old cats out was rather annoying. Muffler was a joke, just two big hunks of metal.
Kris Lopez Not many ways aside from reducing weight. Exhaust alone is a big drop. You can get a tune for a small HP/TQ boost and redline increase (Dinan, couple others). Ram air intake can add 2-3 Hp. The easiest way to get big gains is a supercharger. Not many other options for this engine.
I would not recommend removing the resonator, you get a lot more drone. Muffler delete and new tips alone are enough to free up some weight and improve sound dramatically

Again thanks for the reply and I think I'll just go with the muffler delete

Yup you're right about the weight reduction but eventually I want to do a full exhaust system and a dinan intake system
Pretty awesome. I'm doing a delete soon on my 07 550.
THAT SOUNDS FUCKING BEAUTIFUL MAN
Glad to hear :)
Hey, I have a question because I'm thinking about removing either the resonators or the muffler until i buy an exhaust system for my 550i, which one would you recommend? Btw it sounds nice
Remove just the muffler first, as I mentioned previously the loss of resonators might be too droney for some
Nice dude what did u do exactly to get that sound.?
Joel, is there a kit to buy to remove the muffler and use tips or is it a just a custom job from a shop that can weld it all back together? Thanks
ANY muffler shop can do it. it's an extremely rudimentary job, just cut the 3.5" pipe going into stock muffler, remove stock muffler, small Y-pipe into two tips (I went with 2x 3", fits rear bumper cutout the best)
might be 3.5" tips. recently sold the car and can't remember
Hey Joel ! I got an 07 550i got the muffler delete on it .. And just like you said im not thinking about messing with the resonators but thinking about the deleting the cats what do you think ?
+Mounif Habib Leave the cats. There's not a big difference in sound or volume, but you'll run into issues passing emissions (for obvious reasons)
Would you say I fucked up by buying this car? Can I chip the engine like some other bmws?
Of course you can chip it :). And what on earth do you mean? It's a fantastic car. Doesn't need much work. Do you track or drag it? If so, there are better cars for that. It's a good daily driver with enough power, great handling for a sedan of its size, and very few mechanical issues.
did you remove all the stock resonators?.
stock resonators are in place, little to no drone :)
Nice man
How much did this cost? Sounds amazing
Very cheap, you're just removing material
Joel Dazey thanks I appreciate it. What about the high flow cats? Cheap too?
The cats were the most expensive part, $600ish, but dont contribute much to the sound
Joel Dazey gotcha thanks man
This was 5-6 years ago, but I believe it was a separate purchase that needed to be welded. If I recall correctly, getting old cats out was rather annoying. Muffler was a joke, just two big hunks of metal.
will any of this modifications affect any computer sensor?
no, not in the least
+Joel Dazey thank you, will prob do this nxt week
+smultigaming it's worth it, cuts quite a bit of weight also
+Joel Dazey around how much $ did it cost?
+smultigaming next to nothing at any exhaust shop. the tips are most expensive part
It's got 140k miles on it by then way
Kris Lopez Make sure proper maintenance is done. Cost goes up dramatically if you let stuff break as opposed to getting it done early
What tips are those
AR Fishing and Outdoors generic 3.5" magnaflows if I recall correctly
How can Make my 2006 550i at faster??
Thanks

Kris Lopez get a bms tune. Instant 100hp
hey are you on PNW BMW? check it out on Facebook!
I don't believe so, I will check it out :)
lol thats cute.
Nice raised truck you compensating fuckboi
Your truck does look like shit
