    The highly virulent Ebola virus has seen a few major outbreaks since it first appeared in 1976 -- with the worst epidemic occurring in 2014. How does the virus spread, and what exactly does it do to the body? Alex Gendler details what Ebola is and why it's so hard to study.

      ***** No, because I also need money to live. But I do give some money away, and I volunteer when I can. Drug companies are in the position to save lives, but profit margins get in the way of that, I am in less capacity to save lives but I will if I am physically capable of doing so.

      Are you willing to work for just a cup of coffee and biscuits? The drug companies don't have any money. They got their money mostly from Investors. The investors don't want a cup of coffee and biscuits in return. The drug companies can't pay their scientists with Coffee and Biscuits too.

    Some of the African people do actually eat bats. That's how it is transmitted to humans. This can answer your question, because in the video it says it remains unknown in 3:03. :) You're welcome!

    the 'cytokine storm' they're talking about is where (almost) every single cell uses all it's power to try and kill the virus, a very last ditch attempt. but the cells do not only kill the virus/infection, but also harm the body a lot by causing internal bleeding and swelling in vessels. Though this won't kill you most of the time, it weakens your immune system greatly and gives other harmful infections time to infect and kill you. That is the most common way that the ebola virus kills humans.

    • @syntheticant8172
      @syntheticant8172 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cytokines themselves are messenger proteins used to carry information by cells, in this case it refers to the body using these to activate all of its defenses to kill the virus, even the immune cells that are better suited to other foes as a last stand of sorts.

    Until the 2014 Ebola outbreak, the only time I heard of Ebola was a brief mention in _Osmosis Jones_. When the 2014 outbreak happened, I finally looked it up, and was horrified. Mimics flu? Progresses to vomiting, diarrhea, bleeding out of possibly every orifice, and eventually coma and death? Nightmare disease! Like something out of a sci-fi horror movie!

    They are currently doing ebola vaccine trials in my city. I wanted to volunteer to be part of the trial but I take medication daily so I would be eliminated from the pool of applicants. So far from what I've heard things are going well and the people who were innoculated are feeling ok.

    • @kucasmukas7942
      @kucasmukas7942 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Duessa2000 Really? You'd volunteer for a dangerous experiment for companies that make immense fortunes? We need more people like you and I need more stocks of these companies!

    • @Duessa2000
      @Duessa2000 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm Canadian... this isn't a trial from some company with an immense fortune playing with my life.... this is a trial from Canada's National Microbiology Laboratory, a part of Health Canada.
      And yes, I'd volunteer for such an experiment, that passed all the preliminary safety testing.

    • @kucasmukas7942
      @kucasmukas7942 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Duessa2000 Well, PHAC licensed the vaccine to an American privately held corporation in 2010, so you infact you did try to volunteer for one, even if you were contacted through PHAC. It's not going to develop it for charity that's for sure, or else it wouldn't have licensed it, and if it did it's directors are liable to be sued and _will_ have to reimburse the lost revenue. You may be willing to take a risk only for the betterment of the world, but no director of a company is going to pay for it. They will make the most money they can because it's their legal obligation to the share holders.

      It is not just in Africa. It really is everywhere. Ebola comes from places that don't have good access to water and sanitation (and even toilets) it can also come from pepole who travel overseas in 2-20 days after getting ebola and who spread the Ebola through bodily fluids that comes from a human.

    • @Acyte
