Those back-up vocalists are Flo & Eddie, best known for their days in The Turtles and Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention. Mambo is famously a form of Latin music and dance, but is also a word used in the world of voodoo, and I think that's where Marc Bolan was driving at lyrically. Not so much the ritualistic forms of voodoo, but the hypnotic vibes often associated, which this songs certainly has. The musical influence Bolan has had decades after his unfortunate death continues to grow. T. Rex was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year. I know many don't care much for the hall, but you have to admit that for a band far more popular in the UK and Europe and gone since 1977, it's quite an honor and testament to Bolan and the band's lasting legacy.
T.Rex were massive in UK Europe, Japan in the early 70s, at one time they sold more records than The Beatles, Ringo Starr made a film about T.Rex called Born to Boogie.
Excellent album. It’s a shame that the main guy, Marc Bolan, died young in a car crash. I don’t think T Rex made that big a splash in America, but they were huge in England. The band started as a kind of psychedelic folk duo, then evolved into a pioneering glam band.
Its Marvel's Dr Strange. The comic was first published in 1963. Bolan also sang about The Silver Surfer in a couple of his songs and Spider-man in a unreleased blues demo.
In a way, as a long-time fan of t.rex, it's refreshing to see someone react to this having no clue of the context. The spoken recital of the lyrics was interesting to hear as well, breaking the words out of the rhythm I am used to hearing them in. I hope you enjoy exploring more of the Bolan magic.
Very nice review, thanx, from across the pond 🏴 T.Rex....is my favourite band Please check out some of his other tracks, too many to mention here. From 1974, check out the Zinc Alloy album (underrated IMHO) please listen to ‘Nameless Wildness’ my all time favourite song 💙 .....I think 🤔
Bolan was one of the first to play pop music with distortion. He was also one of the first to dress androgynously and wear make-up. For the record, it was the opening song to Electric Warrior. And, as far as Marc's lyrics...best not to over analyze them. He just put words on a page that sounded good together without thinking about it too hard. One of the early inspirations for hair metal lyrics. Just arrogant pomp and weird, power-words. Dr. Strange was a comic character. Whether Marc was referencing him or not is debatable. He just said, sang and did whatever would get him attention and make him famous. ...And it worked. His album The Slider is my favorite. From T.Rex, I also discovered Mott the Hoople, Slade, New York Dolls, Suzi Quatro, Bowie's early stuff and The Sweet. (There were lots of others, but that's who comes to mind right away.) I was a 70's style glam kid once hair metal began to wear thin in the early 80's and then got into goth, which stole heavily from the glam genre. Anyway, nice job on the review. I'll have to look at more of your channel.
T. Rex had a big hit with Bang a Gong but they have a good number of great tunes. Especially if you are into his style of boogie. They had their start as a psychelic folk ouft with Marc Bolan as the lead writer, singer, and guitarist. T. Rex was huge in the UK and died before he hit it huge in the US.
oh dear. Bolan is a very influential artist. The USA were slow to pick up on Bolan but he is well worth checking out properly. He paved the way for Bowie and a host of cock rock glam bands. def lepp, Slash, Kiss, U2, Prince , his influence is massive.
Bolan was a poet as well and loved to play with word that sound good together and he would do the same with his songs thats why some don't make sense you sould try Buick Mckane great song
it opens Electric Warrior. and is quietly stunning.

Once you start listening to Marc Bolan, you become addicted pretty quickly
I bought Electric Warrior for Bang A Gong, but this first song on the first side, made me an instant and total T.REX fan.

T-Rex was also pretty popular in Canada. Great song, very smooth and funky.
My favorite artist growing up in the 70s
Gone at 29. Keep a little marc in your heart ❤️

Check out the song Ripoff from that same album, really entertaining and done in almost a rap like rhythm.
