I felt so incredibly stressed when I played in my first tournament, the pressure felt unreal. Sure, I was confident and I spent countless hours a day training for months, but still, I knew that if I slipped up, everyone's preconceptions about girls would immediately get confirmed, all "Yup, no surprise here, she sucks". After I made it to the finals, though, I realized that it doesn't matter if I'm a girl or a guy, in the end, the only thing that matters is whether you can actually play worth a damn, and once you prove that you can, you'll get the respect you deserve.

What’s cool is that they all play Tekken games. That’s awesome, but it got me thinking: why is that? Not trying to start some kind of fight, but I’m wondering what is it about Tekken that has garnered a more publicly well known female player base than other fighting games, at least from what I’ve seen. I’m very intrigued about this and wonder if it’s got to do with the fact that it’s a more open 3D fighting game rather than a traditional 2D one, or if it’s something else entirely.

Tekken has the most freedom out of all fighting games, and the whole trope about how women are more creative than men actually comes into play there. They play characters that allow them to paint a picture of their gameplan through intricate setups, like Ling Xiaoyu, as opposed to standard, simple characters that we normally see in Tekken tournaments like Jack-7 or Dragunov.

Just seeing this now (can't believe I didn't see it before 🙈). I'm so glad a video like this exists. I'm not a pro fighting game player but I would attend informal sessions now and then, and this has definitely been my experience. People are surprised when you're decent at the game but don't like to lose to you because of the "connotations" it has. This isn't just confined to fighting games but all genres, where people are constantly surprised when you're good at the game, no matter how much time you've put into it. It's like being proficient at games as a female is a novelty to people. I used to work in a video game store and people would constantly ask me if I just "worked there" or if I actually play games 🤦🏻‍♀️ People really need to alter their perception and leave their stereotypes behind.

This is a perfect demonstration of why non-physical sports still need exclusively female spaces. I can totally see why women can feel isolated or intimidated in a male-dominated field, and they're just naturally more comfortable around other women. Any female ex-member of the Mormon church and the JW can tell you how debilitating it is to have to confide in a bunch of men who often are downright paternalistic, misogynistic and even predatory.

This reminds me of the first fighting game tournament I ever watched, which I believe was Evo 2012? Or maybe 2013? I can't remember but I'll look it up again later.
I was a particular child being from the east coast, but moving to the midwest it felt like I couldn't really fit in anywhere. Being in a family that thought it was weird I was nearing 13 years old and still being into what they referred to as cartoons but as you can probably guess was anime.
I was weird though. I was the type of person so discouraged of losing that I would play fighting games in two player so I wouldn't have to lose. Two Best Friends Play actually got me into the genre the way I am today, but coming into my teenage years I honestly felt like there weren't any other people like me. I get on my TH-cam after being bodied in Mortal Kombat 9 to actually learn some combos and I stumble upon that tournament in complete and total utter awe...
The majority of the whole MK pro community at that time were black players. A few years later Rdcworld1 one appears and I find out how popular anime is in the black community and I went from feeling alone and uninspired to the contributor I am now

I don't know why "getting charmed" is considered sexist. I find "getting charmed" true for me, personally.
Let's start with the things that I'm NOT saying:
      1. A girl can't take me down by pure skill.
      2. A girl HAS (or is actively trying) to charm me just to defeat me.
Now with that out of the way, I do get distracted when battling against a pretty face. A girl's look is such a natural weapon that it creates an inherent advantage that calls me to get stronger with my focus.
Sometimes that fails, sometimes that doesn't... regardless if I win or lose.

I find that mentality of "going easy on you just bc you're a girl" is so prominent in the FGC. I don't play in tourneys due to pure lack of funds but in most cases, when my opponent finds out I'm a female it's like their playstyle does a comeplete 180. It's super offensive and bothers me waay more than if I were to get shit talked. Also I see a lot of people wondering why most girl gamers choose 3D over 2D fighters, as someone who picked up SC6 when it dropped and just recently actually tried learning Tekken, it's mainly bc you get more freedom in your play.

You know if there's one thing I love about women's presence being even bigger than it's ever been in gaming communities, it's the fact that I don't need to feel bad about "going harsh" on them.
Don't get me wrong I was never down with the idea of "going easy on them because they're girls" but back when I was growing up that was generally expected from me, but it's videos like this that make me see them as players and not women anymore.
