What's great about watching the process is that gives people a much greater appreciation for handmade watercolors and a deeper understanding of what goes into the paints (binder ingredients) and how the different colors are made (single pigment vs. combinations of pigments).

    hi! Fellow paint maker here. First of all: Im already a fan of these series! Making paints is just so relaxing.
    Secondly, you can prevent the shrinking of drying pans for some part. When you mull the paint longer it'll become more paste-like, so a bit more firm. When it reaches this point and you pour it into pans it will shrink less! it's not 100% foul proof, but it worked for me in the past

    • @arleebean
      @arleebean  5 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      Ah, that’s such a fantastic idea! I had definitely noticed that the paint becomes thicker the longer it’s out on the slab, but I hadn’t connected that to less shrinking! Thank you so much for the tip!

    • @twycross3
      @twycross3 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Do you make oil paints? I've been trying to find some phthalo blue pigment and can't seem to find it. Have you tried making watercolors out of woad?

    • @Erdhenne
      @Erdhenne 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      You can also let the paint sit even longer on the slab once your done mulling. Water will evaporate really, really slow.
      On some days I mull my paint in the morning and let it sit before I go to bed again. It's still moist enough to give it in pans.
      But you should go and see after the paint every few hours and fold them with the palette knife while letting them sit.

      that what I was thinking twycross, Arleebean though I am not an expert in this, why not leaving it on that glass enough time so it have more consistency or thikness, measure the time, which will vary depending on the room temp., and humidity level ... then the number of refilling will go down.. how about plant based paint.. would it be of same quality and same procedure? thanks

    • @rioreason
      @rioreason 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      youshimimi youshimimi I would have to guess it depends on the pigment and how the elements of the powdered materials react to that exposure to sunlight. For example, in gemstone based pigments: amethyst has a tendency to lose color when exposed to sunlight, and eventually yellow. Lapis lazuli (ultramarine blue) also has a tendency to fade after extended exposure. Unless there’s some kind of chemical reaction during mulling, the lightfastness should directly correlate to how well the original material holds up to sunlight.

    It's nice to see another artist join the journey of paint making. PS it consumes you!!! I love making paint it's definetly helped me understand and appreciate watercolours more. In terms of trouble shooting the bad news is apart from a few simple problems most difficulties with it can only be answered by practice/experience. It's hard to explain but you get to a point where you can feel if the paint is right/wrong a bit like when cooking and you know whether your food is cooked right. I love the colours you've made and I'm glad that youre enjoying this process.
    A little note to those saying about disclosing recipes etc, whether it's a commercial brand or an artisan each paint maker has their own binder which contributes to the behaviour and quality of the paint. Every handmade brand is different and has it's own signature. We don't want to give away our signature, as Arleesha says it's taken her a lot of time and practice to get to her stage, it has taken even longer for a those of us who sell our paints to get our formulas right. It takes a lot of hard work, time, trial & error and money to get there. Why would we let others jump the line and prosper from our hard work?

    Oh wow you did great! I love watching people making paints! 😍 The results look so good! When I was in art school my teacher told us how to make watercolours and oil paints ( which is much easier ), of course it's not that she is a paintmaker, she is a restorer and to restore old painting she makes paints herself. Since she knows about chemistry sometimes she adds stuff she has in the lab into the watercolour binder I don't know what I don't remember, but it was so interesting! It's a lot of work, but it's so relaxing and satisfying! I would love to see more videos like this! 😍 ( She also uses a lot of Kremer stuff )

    As a pharmacist with compounding experience, I can tell you... it would be much easier (and the paint would be more consistent and uniform throughout) if you placed your powders in a mortar and pestle and triturated, or ground, the powders together. At that point, you can dump the powders onto the glass and make a little well in the center. Then, you’ll want to combine your liquids in another bowl or measuring cup or whatever you have around... and slowly add it to the well you made in the powder. While adding the liquid, use a spatula to mix and fold between each pour.

    QUESTION FOR PAINTMAKERS:
    Is it possible to get earth pigments 'whole' and then grind them down to a size fine enough for watercolor by hand?
    I have no problem extensively grinding the pigment down if it's possible, but I dont want to get halfway through to realize that I need a whole bunch of special expensive equipment I dont have money for.
    (I'm looking at making a carmine color using Cochineal, though I've only found them as the whole bug and if I'm going to have to invest in getting items to grind them down then I'd like to use them for more than one pigment. I'm pretty sure though every other pigment I've looked at using is an earth pigment, so rocks.)

    • @thefrozencat_art
      @thefrozencat_art 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it is、its just a very long process、can break down the earth with hammers into small enough pieces to grind in a pestle and mortar. Other mechanical tools just make the process faster. Also make sure that the pestle and mortar is harder than the earth.

This was a goldmine of information that i haven't been able to find anywhere else, and would greatly enjoy it if you would make a series about homemade watercolours, and how to do it, and where to source pigments and other things, and how to figure out what you're doing, and basically just everything! i am such a slut for information on how to make your own versions of things that are most commonly found only from big companies, and not sustainable, like clothing or watercolours. this video came up in my recommended, and i am so glad it did! i will now subscribe! goodbye!

    I have been so busy so I have just gotten around to watching this video (finally!) and I am so excited by this process and this information ❤️ I am so full of gratitude that you would put in the effort to share this with us, and I am itching to learn even more about pigments and binders and the entire process, honestly. But for now I might actually just sit down and paint!

    I saw you post this on instagram and clicked as soon as i saw! Those colours are soo nice they look so vibrant and smooth, really nice colours that you selected! I especially like the yellow iron oxide, warm yellow and buff titanium, those colours just speak to me. I really like my cool blues and greens but when it comes to watercolours I find that I lean towards the warm yellows and earth tones.

    Thank you so much for making this video! I've been looking for a variety of watercolors, but where I live, there are virtually no options for handmade watercolors so I was thinking of making my own. This helped a lot. 💜

    Thank you so much, for this video. ❤What I didn't understand is that, if the paint takes a day or two, to dry in the pan, and you have to fill the pans in stages..... What do you do with the rest of the paint. How do you keep it from drying out before you can finish putting it in the pans, while you wait for them to dry? I really don't want to make it in batches because the color will be inconsistent. Thank you for explaining! ❤❤❤

    Does any of the paint you create have an expiration date? And does the binder have one, too?

    I really like how your dialogue is project driven and to the point, plus all your suggestions are excellent, especially to someone relatively new to working with color. Thanks again, and I'm seriously considering signing up with the Skillshare classes you've mentioned. 😉

    Beautiful😍 how long does the binder last once you’ve made it? Is it a long shelf life or does it need to be used up fairly quickly?

    I have made paints before and I found that I got better pours is I stirred the paint on a warm surface and til it was a paste before I put it in the pans. I did this because unless you are going by weights for all of the amounts that each batch is slightly different.

    About a year ago or so, back when Eve first started posting her paint making videos, I went NUTS and started making a bunch of my own paints in secret, with the eventual goal of sharing them in my channel and shop. Because I'm a cheap ass ho, though, I didn't get a muller and slab and instead, opted for a rough ceramic mortar and pestle and it worked out pretty nicely! So I guess my top tip is, if you're not sure you're going to go hard or not with this one, you can improvise tools! You do have to make smaller batches than will a muller and slab, and it's better to get some miniature silicone spatulas to get things out of the curved surface than a palette knife but.... Whoo! There ya go! Good thing I didn't go hard, because I don't really have an adequate work surface and ended up packing up all my stuff after a month or so of experiments. Maybe I'll take them out again, now that I actually have a reasonably sized desk. Who knows!?!!

    Omy ! I am so excited about this series ! I've been wanting to do my own watercolor for a while, I have a bunch of pigments that were offered to me and I am just lacking time. But It is so nice that you are sharing your process I am very curious about everything you'll show ! So maybe I can buy the missing ingrédients and try myself soon !

    I find paint making so interesting to watch but I would never had the patience to do it myself xD the little container you dry the paints in is so smart! I don’t think I’ve heard anyone else on TH-cam mention where they dry their paints so I find that so Interesting! And the colors you made are so beautiful!

    I love that your making homemade watercolors. I was wondering how much cheaper/expensive it is to do homemade watercolors against buying a tube of watercolor. Especially in the long run. I'm interested in trying out homemade watercolors but I want to get some more details before I jump in. I don't have a whole lot of money to spend

    You’re amazing!
    When mixing your own custom colors, how do you know what it will look like on paper before it dries in the pans? How do you know you got your mixtures right? Thank you! I love you’re videos 😊🌺

      Kristen Lapham in the video you can see how she swatched it right from the glass. I am assuming that is how, because even when dry your going to rewet them to use. But as far as ratio I think it’s just a guessing game until you find what works. I also think she’s amazing for being so forthcoming with information to help others. That’s how it should be, artists helping artists 😉
