- This is a continuation of my last video on Making of Metallic Watercolors, however here, I am experimenting by adding a more Glycerin and less honey in the Binder. You can see the difference it can making in the paint making process.

I will give this a go as well since my art is missing out on these lovely colours and mixtures. I love how in depth you are with your findings. I'm not chemistry minded but when someone takes the time like you have to explain how to mix things, I feel that much more confident in trying. The reason why molding is harder is that this pigment also contains particles of metal and / or plastic, so these particles separate from the underlying pigment.

I was wondering if it was possible to use liquid gum arabic? I can only get W&N gum arabic in my country and I have some cool pigments that I'd love to turn into watercolors. If it is possible, would you need to add glycerin or honey or clove oil to preserve make watercolors?
You can definitely use the w&n gum arabic binder , you can add honey , clove oil and glycerin to it too. If you skip it, just the binder is sufficient, it contains preservatives too.

Where do you find the mica powders and little pans and other supplies? Was it a one stop shop or did you buy some ingredients from one place and some from another place. I want to try and make shade of purples , some very vibrant, and deep rich colors. How do you achieve the deep rich colors. I love your color shift video as well as your other video to make your own paints. Could you use a porcelain tray like the butcher tray so you don’t accidentally move the paint off the glass slab? My mind is just buzzing with visions of beautiful paints. Thank you
We have a pretty strict lockdown these days, so all of my supplies were bought from Amazon. You can definitely find deep rich colors of your choice or even mix a few to get your own unique colors. To make paints, best thing would be to use a flat glass slab which would be abrasive for break down the pigments. If you're afraid it may go off the slab, I'd suggest you to take a bigger slab 😅. On porcelain surface, the muller might tend to slip away. I hope this helps.

The only problem I have with honey based binders is that they remain sticky, and being clumsy, I tend to make a mess by accidently touching them and getting the color on other things. If I touch them with my finger it sticks to my finger and lifts out of the palette. Is it just me? That color turned out beautifully.
I totally understand ! You're not alone in this. It happens a lot to me as well. Especially while filling in the pans, they flip and topple at times, and lots of accidents happen. I admire those who do it all without messing it up ✨
Honey holds more water, but at the same time honey based paints don't last as long and they start building mold or fungus.

I was fascinated to learn how easy it is to make my own paint. Thanks so much for sharing this and for answering a question I was wondering about. I had been curious if you could mix two different mica powders to create your own custom color and you indicated, either in this video or the previous video I saw, that you could indeed mix the mica powder. Can I use these recipes to paint accents on furniture? Would I need to add a clear coat to seal the color after it dries? These look amazing and I'd love to make my own colors if possible to do custom paint work.
If you're planning on using it over furniture, I doubt that it'll stay :( . These are watercolors and might get washed off with a slight touch of moisture. I would recommend you to purchase the acrylic binder and mix it with the pigments till you get the coverage you prefer. This should work perfect on furnitures and also seal it with your favorite varnish
What I don't understand is that, if the paint takes a day or two, to dry in the pan, and you have to fill the pans in stages..... What do you do with the rest of the paint. How do you keep it from drying out before you can finish putting it in the pans, while you wait for them to dry? I really don't want to make it in batches because the color will be inconsistent.
sure,I do the same, I make a whole batch... fill in the first layer and store the remaining paint in a small jar and keep it in the fridge. Once the first layer dries, you can top them again and then next layer and so on... I hope this helps :)
Quick question...if you were to use liquid gum arabic, would you use the same measurements as the powder? Is there a difference between the powder and the liquid?
That's a good question. For the liquid gum arabic, it's already a premixed mixture. It has oxgall in it (if you're using one from Schminke) and can be directly mixed with pigments for making Watercolors. I've seen some people add a little of honey/glycerin but it's optional
Question for you when you let the layer dry in the pans. Do you dry them at room temperature? Also the left over paint on your glass what do you do with it until your ready for second layer
They tend to dry in room temperature here, however during winters I prefer to set them close to the heaters. I store the leftover paint in the refrigerator for the next few layers. I hope this answers your question

Hello! I've tried making paint before and have also encountered this specific duochrome mica powder, i think ive got an idea about what could help with this? It seems like this pigment has a tendency to try to stick to other pigment particles and rhe binder isnt enough to keep it dispersed. Ive tried adding a bit more glycerin and it helped disperse but it wouldn't dry as quickly. So perhaps something that acts as a dispersant could help!
I remember something similar once , i also added glycerin and it fixed it. However, it’s been 3 years, that paint still is sticky in the pan. It still feels good to paint with it, so I didn’t really mind
hi. i was wondering how you store your extra paints? like when you dried out your first layer, I think you used the left over paint. Wouldn't it dry out too?
If you used the left over one, do you have to mull it again on the 2nd time of applying it to the pans or is it not necessary? Would really appreciate your response! Thank you.
I usually store the left over paint in a closed container in the refrigerator. It stays wet for upto 3-4 weeks. Sometimes the pigment settles in the bottom. When you top the next layers, mixing them well for few minutes should make it consistent for next layers. I haven't had to mull any of the pigments again for filling in so far. I hope this helps.

Awesome demo! 👍🙂 I was wondering... could you put it in a slightly warm (not hot, but warm) oven to speed up the drying time. I live in a rather humid location and it seems like drying in an oven could be helpful for anyone making the paint where there's lots of humidity. Then again, I am NOT the paint making expert here. LOL! Just trying to learn something new. Thanks! 😊
I’ve heard people try it but there are risks involved. My suggestion would be to go for a food dehydrator 😊

It took approximately 1 weeks for me to dry the paints
My Windsor and Newton colours I am certain are honey based as once they dry they are glossy looking and sticky, so I have to use some baking paper between them and the lid of the container so they don’t get stuck. It’s very frustrating.
I feel that too. Sometimes even the painting feels sticky. But they have their own pros and cons ❤️
Hi, NewM. Winsor and Newton paints are definitely not honey based. You can check this out on thier website. I don't know why yours do this, but maybe your set is not genuine Winsor and Newton. The other possibility is the climate where you are? If it is subtropical / tropical and humid, this could be the answer.
Eg: my TH-cam friends in Colorado, a desert climate, find them vey hard to rewet, while I, in SW France (and when I lived in the UK) have no problems with them at home, but if travelling, have to adapt to the differences in climate humidity (see my reply here, next to this, to Catherine).
However, I am more inclined to think this is not a genuine W&N set. Maybe contacting W&N and explaining your problem may help to resolve it? 🤔
@@crafterine Hi, Catherine. Please see my reply to NewMNetwork. I've just checked where you live now (Germany) so the climate doesn't seem to be the problem. I can't think of another reason than it isn't genuine, as I've used mine all over the world (eg SE Asia and its humidity, Sinai and it's dryness, etc) and the only problems I've had are adapting my work to the climate eg wet-in-wet in humid places where it takes age to dry, or in eg Sinai, where it dries very fast! 😄).
Maybe contacting W&N and explaining your problem may help to resolve it? 😊
How we can make dot cards ? And which paper or sheet is suitable for this paint ?
For making dot cards I've seen other paint makers using 300 gsm Watercolor paper. I personally use Metallic textured cardstock. The pigment doesn't go into the paper. You can also make dots on baking paper/transparent paper and once they have dried, glue it on a paper of your choice ✨

Hello, I have tried to make some paints and think I’ve done ok, But I filled half pans , half full then let them dry overnight. I know that the paint level shrinks so you fill them up and add the pillow top style that you speak of and have shown. My paints still sink in 😢 is this what should be happening? Or what suggestions can you offer to remedy this sinking or cave in? Also when you make batches, how do you know how many pans to fill and leave enough paint for a second layer and pillow top?
I made several colors but did it use enough mica and binder to make more than 2-3 half pans, except my first batch, I had so much mix to make 18 half pans
If you're paints are shirking a lot, you might wanna add more layers to get the pillow tops. Sometimes 4-5 layers approximately. About how to estimate - tbh, It comes with practice and understanding the pigment. As a general rule, I follow - 5g can give me 2-3 halfpans. If I have extras, I would make dot cards or samples or have some mini pans that can hold it

In the Binder, I have 50g of gum arabic, 100 ml distilled water and 2.5 ml of glycerin. I hope this works. The quantity of Pigment to binder ratio might vary, so I'll suggest you to start with 1:1 and see how it goes
You can just add more pigment to make it thicker... and you should most definitely create some tooth on your mulling plate.

After addition of the binder, they tend to get clumped together. Mulling helps break it down and also gives the smoothest paint ever 😍✨

I did the second layer after almost a week. Drying time depends on your weather and humidity conditions. It takes 2 weeks to 4 days sometimes

Each layer takes about 1-2 weeks to dry. For a half pan to get ready, i believe 1.5 - 2 months time can be expected. But again, it depends on the climate in your area too. Paints take longer time to dry in humid regions

I don’t believe it does. It’s just synthetic pigment + gum arabic binder + glycerine
So what is the recipe exactly for the final Glycerine based binder you are using?
TBH, I prefer the honey based binder over the glycerin based one. All paint makers add a unique characteristic to their paints with their binder recipe. In the end, I prefer adding equal amounts of glycerin and honey (Approx 5 ml of each) to get the best of both.

Which company pigments did you use? Can I find it on Amazon?
There are various companies that offer mica powder like Arteza, PearlEx and other local brands too. You can find most of them on Amazon. Since I'm selling these watercolors I am not at the liberty to mention the ones I use. However, in my journey of paint making, I've tried multiple brands. You can always experiment and see which one works for you ❤️✨

Hello. My paints are not drying. First layer took tien2 days. And second layer did't dry. It's still sticky. Do you know any reason that why paint is not dry ?
Some watercolors that you make will not dry completly espcially if you use honey, they will remain sticky - even some professionaly made watercolors like M. Graham for instance do not dry in the pans, it just depends on the ratio and pigment used :)
@jannahlyon is right. Sometimes if we add a bit much honey they turn out to be spongy and sticky. Next time you can try to tone down the honey ratio

Yes. All the mica pigments I use are synthetic ones.

It's best to pour paint in layers and let them dry instead of filling to the brim

For a few earth Pigments I do. But then for this one, I kept the extra paint in the fridge. And filled the layers using it 😊

First layer would take 1-2 weeks if you dry it naturally. And the rest of the layers take 5-7 days

These are watercolors and are meant to be used on paper or canvas. I wouldn't advise you to put it on any part of the skin :)

I guess instead of using watercolor binder, if you can use an acrylic binder - it should work on tshirts. To be honest, I haven't tried anything like that yet

I don’t understand how this is glycerin based. It’s gum Arabic based and didn’t you put honey and glycerin in it? I’m confused as s that’s the basic watercolor binder recipe. When you said glycerin based I assumed that the base was glycerin not gum Arabic.
Gum Arabic is the base of every binder. Without gum arabic, the pigments would not stick together. While making paints, in the gum arabic solution, we add honey for easy rewetting and glycerine to improve the flow of the paints. I tried almost 1 tbsp of glycerine and added 2 ml of honey, to help me mull the paints better. However it didn't work for me. Later I added lots of honey to help me grind and mull the paint well. Basically this video was an experiment to see if I can make paints without honey. I hope this helped you. You can also DM me on my Instagram if you would like to know more ☺️
@@crafterine yes gum Arabic is the BASE of every binder but your title of the video says glycerin BASE binder thus the confusion It’s more of of an experiment of the different amounts of glycerin vs honey in the binder. Glycerin isn’t the base, it’s adding more if I am making sense I have been making watercolor awhile and thought you had a different way when it said glycerin base watercolor.
I basically use the binder recipe from handprint and only have to add a couple drops of glycerin to some pigments and just a small amount of honey. I got linden honey from Ukraine as it’s used by professional makers. I make a batch ahead of time and keep it in the fridge. It lasts quite awhile and make 9tbsp at a time in a squirt bottle with the honey and glycerin
So far the only pigment I have had an issue with was a synthetic carmine. It’s a pain. But when it comes to mica and glitter I never mull them as you break down the crystalline in them that gives it that shine.

@@irmarivas7603 handprint.com has the best information. Not all pigments do well with honey, some don’t like as much glycerin so I make my base binder (1/2 cup gum Arabic 1 cup hot water). Then once it’s all mixed and settled I’ll strain it into a jar and add 2 drops of clove oil. From that I take two squeeze bottles and put 9 TBSP (4.5 oz) of the binder I just made in each. One I’ll add raw organic honey 1 TBSP and glycerin 1 TBSP and the other just glycerin. Mica pigments requires less glycerin so I’ll mix it with what’s left of the base binder. You just need to see what works best for your pigments and where you live with regard to the honey. I’m in Florida so if I add too much honey it will never dry. I never use honey in mica and very little glycerin. Ochre pigments are different than cobalts etc. it’s just a matter of practice. 1/2 tsp of pigment is plenty to test Just be sure to keep a notebook with recipes, issues, mulling time etc and I will keep my swatch tests. To start do a 1:1 ratio and adjust from there. Some will need little less. Staining pigments like Prussian blue requires a lot more. I use less pigment otherwise I’ll end up with enough for a year. Always use distilled water. Just test. I have been reading and researching for months. There’s no magic book that will tell you what formula to use at least that I’ve found lololol. So just shop around for your pigments, and have fun. It’s addicting!

That’s a palette knife with a wide end. You can find them in craft stores too
