I did watch the 2020 Netflix adaptation, a quick video on that version will be up in a couple days!

I've been reading "Rebecca" since 1980 and, like you, prefer the book over the still beautiful 1940 Hitchcock film. Your articulate and interesting exegesis was one of the best I've ever heard. Many thanks.

haven’t read the book but I’ve watched three of the Rebecca movie adapts. The Hitchcock movie is my favorite Hitchcock movie, period. The second best Rebecca movie is the 1997 one with. The Netflix one looks great but I feel the two leads are miscast. However Kristen Scott Thomas was great as Danvers. 🍿

I haven't seen the 1997 one, but I agree with your thoughts on the Hitchcock and Netflix ones!

    Great video review!
Rebecca is one of the few books that I've re-read, and this movie adaptation is the best so far.
Alfred Hitchcock is my favorite director and created amazing movies! I watched all his movies before the age of 13. My mom just gave me her physical copy of Rebecca copyright 1938. Yay!

Loved this video! I thought the book was so good but I absolutely enjoyed the Alfred Hitchcock movie too. I think he captured the shadow of Rebecca being all around perfectly. I unfortunately didn't enjoy the Netflix version but I look forward to hearing what you thought! As a side note I would love to see a book vs movie of The Color Purple. I think it's interesting how the book is written in letters and how that was translated through film. I thought it was done well and the remake comes out next year as a musical so that will be very cool to see. Just a thought 🙂

Thank you! And yeah I have a lot of problems with the newer movie lol.
And I have been wanting to cover The Color Purple, but I've been putting it off because I know it'll be a tough read. But you will definitely see me cover it sometime in the next few months

What about a tie? The movie was so good and such a big deal when released. But I haven't read the book, so there you go!

Book does not always win. To Kill a Mockingbird film is widely called equivalent to book; 101 Dalmatians author Dottie West said Disney's 1961 cartoon *improved her story!*

For sure! There have been many times when I choose the movie over the book.

I haven’t read the book or seen the movie but I do know the summary. Think this is a cautionary tale for women how marriage won’t make anything better. The narrator is constantly in the shadows of her husband’s first wife and she feels like an outsider in her new lifestyle. Psycho would probably have to be my favorite Hitchcock movie. How about you Laura?

Psycho is a great one, I also love Rear Window and Vertigo. I remember liking North by Northwest too, but it's been ages since I've seen that one.

What almost no one knows is that the book Rebecca is a plagiarized version of the book "A Sucessora" by the Brazilian writer Carolina Nabuco. They even wanted to offer money in agreement, but she didn't accept it, but she also didn't sue for plagiarism.

I just stumbled across this channel and I am fascinated by the content! Love the film (essential Hitchcock) and the performances and atmosphere. I haven't read the book, but my sister has a couple of times and very much enjoyed it. She never said which she likes better, the 1940 film or the novel.
I hope that one day you assess Washington Square and The Heiress (1949) by William Wyler, (which is an adaptation of the hit stage play, based on Washington Square the novel, by Henry James). Wonderful film and the novel is a quick read.

Thanks! The Heiress has been on my list for a while! I've seen the movie and loved it, but I have never read the book. I'll bump it up on my schedule, it's been too long since I've done an older movie.

I’m a huge Hitchcock fan. Remember seeing the play performed at my high school. Haven’t read the book… so thanks for filling in the details and implications I missed.

Maxim is attracted to and subsequently marries his new wife because she is the opposite of Rebecca.
