The conflict between Shabana and Smita began simmering after Mandi and reached it's peak after Arth. Smita Patil claimed that Mahesh Bhatt had promised a bigger role to her in the film, but reduced her role upon Shabana's insistence. Shabana felt insulted by Smita's words and said she would never do such a thing. The war of words continued until Smita's death three years later.

ikr, like even if there is some talent, all of it gets channeled into crap content. those who are in commercial cinema are idolised. but actors like these are just looked back at in nostalgia and those in parallel cinema now can mostly only crossover to commercial cinema if they take up small roles.

She is said to have cried a lot in repentance after doing “Aaaj rapat jayaein toh hamein na bhulaiyo…..”. Simply because she thought the song was obscene, her mother had consoled her. When we look at it today, the song looks sensual but not obscene.
