    This Glider Crashed today, haven't been able to find yet it but I expect it to be destroyed.

      Floris Heuperman will have a look again tomorrow, it landed in very thick Mangrove trees and the tide was in at the time. I was walking in waist deep water muddy water in mangroves that thick it was about 5 -10 meters visability at points. Looked for about 1 hr but figured it landed in water so not much chance of finding anything usable.

      I think some kind of turbulence causing a tip stall, when I pulled out of it the wings couldn't handle the g's and one broke. Looked for it for around 6 hrs total and after the 3rd attempt (2 weeks later) it was found. much less damage than I expected. The wings have been strengthened and it has now been fully repaired. recovering has almost been finished, then I just need to reinstall new electronics as it was out in the weather for 2 weeks and I don't trust it even if it seems to be working fine.

    I'm not a modeller but I find this video so inspiring. What a beautiful looking plane too, I was shocked to see your "I expect it to be destroyed" and that it ended up lost in a swamp and so glad to see that it survived! I look forward to seeing more footage of it. Thanks very much.

      @@goldenfish77 don't forget , you still need to tape the wings on or use different method to secure the wings. The connectors are just to locate the wings.

    Mate, very nice. Maybe I don't have to buy a Gentle Lady or Bird of Time, just make my own.
    At our club, Logan, the guys kill their own Radians. Three major crashes in the past two weeks and two fly away's in the past six weeks. Yikes ....

    Beautiful and I’m a true fan of balsa but it’s only from a lack of understanding of the modern hobby to think this would come even close to the radian in terms of popularity and sales - folk don’t build anymore, they can’t even fly without complex stabilisation and airframes they can dispose of and replace with “just 2 screws”

    Excellent video and a great test flight - congratulations.
    Funnily enough the tip I really liked (and may well 'steal') is using 4mm bullet connectors for anti wing rotation. I think they may also make neat hatch retainers, helped by my usual small magnets.

      Make sure you tape the wing on with a low adhesive tape, the connector itself isn't enough to hold it on. just peel the tape off when you want to pack up.

      +FGDude Thanks. close to 50% more wing area and less drag than a radian. it weighs 30 grams more than a radian but climbs as good if not a bit better.

      honestly, if you have the skill to build this, you could most likely design it too.

      I'd like to give it a go!! You're right we can do our own designs, can you share just a bit of info on a few key dimensions like wing span, wing cord, dimension from motor mount to wing LE, and length of boom? I'd like to get these basic measurements just so I don't need to add a ton of ballast to get the balance on CG!

      what I do to make sure I dont need to add any weight to get the cg right is make the fuse ahead of the wing longer than I think it needs to be. Then when the rear half of the plane is finished (servos and wire installed etc ), I temporarily place the motor and battery up front so I can adjust where it needs to be. Then cut the fuse as needed.
      That way no weight is needed to correct the cg.
      Wingspan is 2.5 meters
      Cord is 28cm
      Your materials will likely weigh different so your fuse length will probably be different but:
      LE to motor mount = 29cm
      LE to rear end on boom = 1.9m

      @@wshurmatz1 just do like I do. find a plane you want to build and then build a plane that fits those measurements and Design. I haven't built any big gliders yet but I've been building small Balsa gliders from plans I find online. But I don't have a printer to print out the pages so I just take the measurements and draw the lines in myself by hand.

      The best way to learn is to do it yourself!
      give it a try in a smaller scale.

      The wings are taped on with a low strength tape. that connector is just to locate the wing.

    To claim to be a radian killer is a big claim, its a great glider for a foamy, i believe you have done it. How is the penetration of this glider/ Your l/d looks to beat a radian by a bit. Give us more please. I am going to extend the wings of the radian by 2 to 3ft and see what happens. i will let you know thanks!!

      penetration AND float can be seen in $2,000 DLGs To get both in a balsa electric poly, some tradeoffs will have to be made.

    The main spar should be located on the wings center of pressure and a D cell should extend back to the center of pressure as well to avoid the wing twisting under load which allows adding ballast for the conditions you will fly in. And might as well take advantage of using carbon fiber to make it stronger in the first areas to fail. Lot's of work to build a balsa wood glider from a pile of wood but it's the only way to try out new foils and wind shapes.

      Everything you have just said would have substantially increased the weight of the wing.
      You then mention adding ballast, when weight saving was the priority, there is no chance I would do any of those suggestions.

      You did a beautiful job building your design. But nevertheless using a main spar on the ideal C/P location relative to the C/G (C/P changes with angle of attack) to prevent the wing twisting is a much lighter weight design alternative to using a D cell which is why low sink rate thermal gliders like the original OLY2 and Top Model's newer Ibis etc. don't use a sheeted leading edge D cell but always try to have the spar at the estimated ideal C/P location. Wing flex, such as induced tip washout to prevent tip stalling, can be achieved by tapering the wingtip ahead of the C/G to give the area of pressure behind the C/P more leverage and is part of determining the wing shape in relation to its aspect ratio and design parameters. Without added material weight required to prevent twisting on a wing supported ahead of the C/P twisting and therefore wing flutter and instability will be increased.
      Ballasting to accommodate even a small change in the wind/direction will make the difference between winning and losing a contest using similar gliders flown by equally skilled pilots on average. Adding power and weight makes a neutral twist balanced wing even more important. The advantages of a main spar in the RC model scale is shown in building a very thin wing with a forward foil (a thinner modified airfoil) and comparing the flight performance to a similar thicker wing. I have seen an RC "thermal" glider often flown in high winds with a much higher wing loading than an OLY2 fool experienced pilots by it's thin wing providing an extremely low sink rate that seemed to contradict it's higher weight and wing loading in out performing the OLY2 in sink rate as well as other flight modes. Most things have been tried building RC aircraft and what we see is a result of trial and error and copying more than using applied mathematics that will show the same results done correctly. Going thinner due to having access to better materials allows for new exploration but the basic principles of support in relationship to material weight required remain. And as usual keeping it simple is generally the better way to do anything.

    I really like it RS, though I would choose different colours. But balsa building is too complex for me. I work in a precision engineering works and have discovered that, after work, I can't be bothered with the finesse required in the details. So I'm more into foam board and no sanding. But I do like to think up problems and find solutions. I've not owned a Radian, though people say it's good. Hmm, maybe I should try and make something like yours here, but emulate the Radian's dimensions exactly, ie, span/length, just to see what it can do. I'm off out to sort out some more 6mm foam sheets today. :¬)

      Thanks, If I had to do it again, I wouldn't have picked the metallic. it added 30 grams more weight then if I had chosen a normal colour.
      The Radian is good, I prefer the normal Radian over the pro version.
      I also have depron sheets for concept testing.

      I wouldn't mind buying a Radian one of these days, but I'm never one to leave things alone and I'd probably end up flattening the wings quite a bit and adding ailerons. :¬P
      Oh, and I now find that I lied about the sanding, as I've just repaired, re-purposed a pair of Armin type wings that I extended to 2.5 meters. I used a "Mouse" sander with 120 grit extensively. I ended up using a bit of water sprayed on to the surface to eliminate 'balling' of the lightweight filler. It works a treat.
      They are now 2.46 mtrs but with semi elliptical wing tips and fully glued in carbon tubes right at the top and bottom surfaces. They are ridiculously rigid, compared to any Armin job. And with a fishing rod tube for a tail boom and basic foam board fuselage I've started to discover what people mean when they talk about lift.
      Though I'll admit that I didn't get fanatical about weight and covered most of it with glass reinforced tape. Well, we're approaching winter here now and winds are picking up, so the glider is actually quite fun as I already know It can take a knock. ;¬)

    Did you post your build on RC Groups ? i am guessing your wing root chord is 8 inches ? i am Most interested in your Leading edge shape of the wing , its very hard to tell from the video but i am guessing you are shaping the LE to achieve a more modern air foil ?? any little tid bit of info on that would be most Awesome
