I just did this exact repair no more than 10 mins after upload. the toilet has been having issues for the past 3 years and since it is a toilet no one uses it was easier to turn off the water until today. It was a great walkthrough tutorial. Thanks for the confidence boost.

Jeff…. Thank you so much for this easy to follow video. My toilet has been making this noise for over a year…. OVER A YEAR!! I assumed my hubby was never going to call the plumber so I took matters into my own hands. Thanks to your video.. my toilet is finally quiet. The only issue I had was that apparently a very strong man had tightened the plastic locknut God knows how many years ago, and I just couldn’t twist it off. I decided to try twisting the old fill valve inside the tank to see if it would loosen the locknut that way, and it did. Once it was loose I was able to twist the locknut off without a problem. This time it was twisted back on by my women hands so it should be easier to take off if needed next time. 🤣 Thanks again for saving me money by teaching me how to do it myself. A lot of pride comes with doing things yourself. Oh… and my husband is singing me praises!! 😂🤣

I watched you video where you recommended replacing the entire fill valve instead of just the seal. I went cheap and just bought the $3 seal. After installing the seal, the whistling stopped, but the fill valve never closed. Another trip to the store to pick up the fill valve as you recommended finally got my commode working quietly.

Although I didn’t replace the pump, this video did help me. I didn’t realize there was a removable, rubber seal on the inside. I have hard water in my home and suspected there may be buildup of minerals, which I was right. I used soap and an old toothbrush to clean off the mineral deposits, put it back together, and the noise was gone. I know a new unit is only $15, but money saved is money saved. I certainly recommend checking the seal since it only takes a few minutes.

Just fixed my toilet yesterday finally with the help of this video. Thank you! My replacement valve is a 400A and the old one was M31718. Both by Fluidmaster. The 400A has a plastic pipe and the other one had a metal pipe. The maximum height of the 400A valve was at the three inch mark above the overflow pipe. Increasing the height of the main valve increases the water going into the tank. From there, the secondary valve fine tunes the water level up or down. If you use the secondary valve, the best way to test it is to flush the toilet next. Just adding a little water through the secondary valve does not necessarily reflect exactly where the level will be on subsequent flushes.

Watched your video 8 times while doing the repair, still like your video due to what my other comment stated.
Took me 35 minutes to repair the toilet, just going back and making sure everything was tightened.
Only difference is that i had to use a pair of pliers on the gasket at the bottom and i did use my Shop Vac, but everything else went perfectly. 😁
Thank you for this video and i am now a committed subscriber. 😎👍🏾

Great job buddy. It solved the whining noise I was hearing, and I also found out after doing the 3" measurement between the overflow tube and the top of the fluid master that the old the height was way too short. I fixed all that and it runs better than it ever has. Thank you.

We've had the squealing issue with our toilet for over a year now. We eventually stopped using the bathroom because we thought there was a serious problem with the toilet. I was about to finally call a plumber when I decided to Google the issue to see if it was potentially a simple fix. Your video was the first one I came across. I immediately ordered the $15 replacement part on Amazon and got it in today. I am the WORST at home renovations, but with your help this took me only 10-15 minutes to fix!! Thank you so much for saving me probably over $100 on hiring someone to fix such an easy problem

i saw someone do this much easier, they didn't undo the part underneath the toilet, they just reached inside the toilet and pulled up the grey thing at the bottom, then the valve comes out easily, then you put the new one in and then push the grey thing back down to the bottom to lock it in place, you dont need to undo the bottom from under the toilet

Good advice. Once you are working on it and have to spend the gas money on a trip to Home Depot get new parts anyway. They look nice and you will be on the better side of chances.
If I do work on gasket seats I always check that no debris is on the surface where the gasket is going to sit. Even minute amounts or scale, dirt or other foreign objects will cause leaks.

The float only has so much upward push possible. I found I had 90 psi coming into my house. I had a plumber install a pressure regulator and several problems disappeared. Showers that made you think you were being sandblasted, water hammer arrestors that didn’t work, and, eventually, a water leak from my washing machine. Lower pressure means toilet floats have a better chance of sealing off the incoming pressure.

If you have issues with stuck / frozen locknut, I applied WD40 to it and tried to use a wrench but it seemingly didn't work. Most plumbers on TH-cam said you need to saw off the old end of the valve / locknut which I was prepared to do (because you get a replacement locknut with the new valve), but then I went back to try one more time and it worked! WD40 must have started working...

The "secondary valve" as you described it fills the bowl, not the tank. Adjust that so the bowl is full just as the tank is full when the valve shuts off. Any extra water going into the bowl will be truly wasted. It's a touchy little control, and you can turn it down too far and the bowl won't fill up all the way when the tank is full, but a little trial & error will have the bowl at the correct level. Check out the Fluidmaster video, too.

Just a quick question -- everything works well just curious if it's normal to take over 1:30 minutes to fill up the actual tank? seems a tad longer than before install. anything I can do? or just leave it alone? the Kohler toilet is about 30 years old fyi (so not a new one). thanks.

Every time a home improvement channel has a fill valve video, I have to tell you guys the story about this lady.
This lady wanted me to fix her toilet because it squealed. Sure enough, the toilets all squeaked right when it finished filling up. So I replaced the rubber fill valve gaskets and called it a day. She calls me back the next day saying the toilets still squeals at night. I go back and replace the flush valves thinking there’s a small leak that forces the toilets to refill at night and squeak. She calls me again a few days later, so I totally strip the toilets down to porcelain and rebuild them with all new parts. A few days later, I get a call again. I tell her I can’t fix it for her and give her her money back.
A few weeks later, I see her son at a BBQ party. He tells me his mom’s tinnitus is getting worse these days.

if the top of the fill valve is set too low, what issues may come about? I've replaced my fill valve assembly for the second time recently after hearing the wheezing/farting sound and sound went away for the past couple of weeks but I'm staring to hear it again as well as hearing intermittent water noise which makes the water filling sound for a brief moment. I wonder if that fill valve level is the culprit or if maybe the flapper portion which I havent replaced yet.

I decided to change the seat. That was wrong. The valve has a cold weld line in the plastic. Mine might have been one of the first shots in the injection molding process. I should have gotten the fill kit. I could have figured this out from the start if I would have taken the valve apart first.

When I run into a toilet issue involving the tank, I traditionally replace both assemblies (unless one or the other is newer) because I don't want that phone call.

Yes that's always a good time to replace the flapper as well because at almost every time I open up somebody's toilet tank I can see that the flap looks like it's 50 years old and faded and it's probably ready

I have good luck replacing the little gasket. But I keep gaskets and a fill valve on hand.

I'm just going to keep extra fill valves on hand don't even want to mess with the gaskets because I pulled out the old gasket and couldn't find anything wrong with it it had looked in perfect condition

@@jeffostroff I had valve rubber with a tear in it. So the water was never shut off completely. But that tear could only be seen when the rubber was deformed. In the normal shape it was not detectable.

Would a Fluidmaster 400A replacement fill valve be ok too?

But what's the point of running that water from the hose down the overflow pipe every time the tank is filling up?

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I never knew why, maybe it is part of the siphon runoff

I just replaced the fill valve and now I'm having issues with squeaking/squealing. Is there something I did wrong with the install that could cause the squealing? I don't want to replace the fill valve again if I don't need to

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Julie, Make sure your water valve is turned all the way back on that it's getting full pressure, make sure there is nothing inside the valve that might have gotten in there and could be blocking the water flow inside there. If you know how to take the cap off and examine the gasket at the top that's usually where the squealing comes from. It could also be you got a bum unit and you might need to get another one

    The problem made me search.
    The squeal made me stop.
And the dulcet and concise directions made me stay.
I waxed poetic over a plumbing video. That alone should make you watch. I'll be heading out later today to get this kit.

Okay so our toilet is a closed in one (inside the tank it’s all in one black container. There’s about an inch or less of water (it’s normal) but I have no idea where or how to change what you’re talking about in a closed in one. Any tips?

Just wondering why in the corner at 2:11 I see the bottom of the wall looks like it's peeling or bending away from the wall. Is there a leak there?
