It's late June and I've got some that a really overgrown. Shall I wait till next year? I really don't want them to get any taller.

I probably wouldn't trim the candles in half now but you can still go down the branch and remove chunks if you have new candles from this year growing below that same branch. Just do it in small steps for a few years and they will be much shorter. Thanks for watching!

Nice video. The bushes look great after you finished. Where did you get your leather arm sleeves? it looks like you can wear your favorite gardening gloves under them.

Thanks Hilary! They are called Arm Chaps and I ordered them on Amazon and they work great.

When you get the maximum size you want, can you take electric hedge trimmers and shape it? Not just the candles, I mean buzz the thing into a circle like a boxwood… thanks!

You can but it will create a really dense shell of growth just around the outside that doesn't let light or air in. I've seen people do it but the proper way is to take out individual branches and leave gaps so the sunlight can get through.

Will mugo pine sprout new buds on older needles after it’s been trimmed like a Japanese black pine?

If you just want to sprout new buds and maintain height I prune mugo pines the same as I would a black pine. Check this video out if you haven't seen it to maintain height. th-cam.com/video/KJb6y0ZiEXE/w-d-xo.html

Is this the way you would do a top grafted one also ?

Yes if the plant has candles as most conifers do you can use this technique on all of them.

Mine is stunted and not growing much. What do I need to do to boost growth. It was fertilized in spring. I water it every few days, except when we have had a lot of rain.

How long have you had it in that spot? They like full sun and well draining soil. I normally don't fertilize unless it's in a pot. I have seen a lot of pines killed due to overwatering so just make sure the roots aren't wet all the time.
