Chevy Hi-Performance magazine in 1969 dyno’d a single 4bbl 302 with dyno headers and transiterized ignition at 448 hp @ 7400 rpm. In the car off the showroom floor they were definitely at 365-375 hp when revved past 6500 rpm. The crossram engines with the 140 off road cam and supplied headers, super tuned were most definitely putting out close to 450 @ 7500 rpm. The factory rating of 290 hp was a real figure, at 5800 rpm. The 302 needed to rev with the overlap and duration of the 30/30 cam factory installed in all of the 302’s.

So they didn't wake up until 7500rpm?

@@matrox 6500 to 7000. The engines only had a 3.00” stroke. The overlap and duration specs on the 30/30 cam matched this. The Boss 302’s had better cylinder heads, and cams with less duration making them better street engines, but they had similar power bands.

Throw on a set of slicks and headers these cars would run 10's

They've been dyno'ed as high as 465 hp *on a test stand with no accessories* for a race engine that could spin past 8000rpm.
I remember a couple of sources saying a *stock* DZ302 should make about 340 SAE Gross hp with the regular single-carb intake and 370 SAE Gross with the cross-ram.
The factory 290hp rating is in the right ballpark to be rated in SAE Net when everyone was used to SAE Gross ratings.
I'd say what to expect if you put it on a chassis dyno but the buyer isn't going to care, are they? :)

Love my z28!.... pops got it off a guy for 6500.... only missing the carb and gauges at the time, hunted down an original carb, bought the gauges, and fired it up drove it with pops and I’ve never seen a motor spin to 7000 with no hesitation and did it effortlessly... and years ago he gave the car to me, after I finish my chevelles restoration the Camaros next

Sounds like the engine has a dead miss in a cylinder. Pull the plug wires one by one, and the one that has no effect on the idle, is the one not firing.

Adding the counter cross ram, which was available but never factory installed, really woke the engine up and that showed at the strip shaving ~1 seconds of the 1/4 mile time and landing them in the high 13's. The as delivered single 4bbls weren't any faster than the SS 350 with 290hp, high 14's, so they weren't fudging the numbers really. That was about the same as the heavier Boss 302 Mustangs as well rated at 290hp. The cross ram moved the peak HP up the rev range result in a healthy rise in HP and a nice strong powerband between the peaks.

When I was in high school(1975) I had a 1970 440-SIXPACK Challenger and my friend had a 68 440 GTX. I was beating 429 semi hemi cyclones but a guy in town had the cross ram Z-28 and we didn't stand a chance against him. Even with my buddy dropping his GTX's auto trans from neutral to 1st. This guy used to burn up his Muncie trans so bad we could hear it and smell it from miles away. Lol. This guy was an unbeatable animal with that car!

Tears in my eyes! In 1972, my brother wanted to sell me his 69 Z. 33k miles...he wanted $1900 for it and I couldn’t afford it. (Sigh)

Yeah, I remember when cars like these were daily drivers. Back in the early '80's you could find lots of factory muscle cars for $1500 - $4000 in the autotrader every week.

wonderful car, wonderful power!! sounds awesome ,goes awesome,,but what do you do after you wind it through 1st and second?? let off it and put the brakes on,thats what. Question is, where can you use it the way it was built to be used ,,,,,aside from a racetrack?

Beautiful and rare--love that color-- did you ever hear of the 'slant plug heads' for small block back in the day? Mainly used for 12.5 compression and flame travel, not really sure if they worked or not though-- 1st generation Camaros are the best-- i had 3, 2 67 RS, one a Yenko clone, 427/425 with 456 gears and a 69 Z, non 302, miss them all but the Yenko 427 the most, awesome power

It is so amusing to hear you American car enthusiasts call those Camaros "nice LITTLE car". You're right though, compared to the regular ones.
