What do you think of this one?

Hey Joshua, I just finished this book as per your recommendation, and I really enjoyed it! Lots of interesting things to say about human behavior and how different relationships affect it. It was interesting seeing Paul go from a sweet, timid child to a charismatic young man, and then a pretty selfish and confused person who uses the women in his life. Sort of like Mrs. Morel, they both start out as likeable characters but as the story goes on “life happens”, they start to behave in ways that make them very unlikable. Also, I was glad Paul didn’t end up marrying Miriam. He was so awful to her I think that relationship would be forever tarnished, even with his mother gone. Hopefully Miriam found someone else! As for Paul, hopefully he’s learned a lot from all this and is able to find happiness.
It was disturbing how easily the characters go between loving and hating each other, haha. And I totally agree about it all having a similar vibe as wuthering heights!
Anyway, there’s lots more i could say about this book, but I’ll leave it at that for now. I may watch the 1960 film and see how it compares.

Glad you enjoyed the book! I think Lawrence said something about the book being a kind of tragedy, which really fits into what you said about the characters. Pretty much all of them, especially Paul, Mr and Mrs Morel, start out likable but slowly disintegrate.
I wish that Paul had managed to sort things with Miriam personally, but I think by the time we get to the end, even if she had agreed to marry him, there would have been resentment in the long term given how badly he treated her. Hopefully he does find happiness, but we'll never know!

I'm glad you reviewed this novel. I've always been interested in reading it, but have never really read a review or in this case listened to one that would make me actually read it! Thanks!

Great Review! I’ll have to add this to my reading list! I haven’t heard of Sons and Lovers, but it sounds like a very interesting read.
I just finished Blood Canticle, which might be the worst narration I’ve experienced. So something with more thoughtful prose might be in order!

Haha, oh dear, I guess I will have that to look forward to after I start and finish Blackwood Farm!

Haha, yes it is something! Blackwood wasn’t bad, but Canticle is a whole novel of Lestat taking like a 1930’s gangster. Thankfully this ended up not being the final book.

Sons and Lovers is definitely a book I have always heard of but not bothered to read, watching this changed my opinion sounds like something I would really like and need to read. The part about someone dead and still controlling and having influence on living reminded me instantly of Daphne Du Mauier, classic gothic novel.
    Rebecca.
I think it’s very interesting that you have such a passion and interest in these classic books. Good job!

Just finished audiobook of Sons and Lovers, yes, I liked it very much. Watching your video helped explain and make me think about it. Certainly a lot there to reflect on. Want to read Women in Love next. By the way there is a 1981 movie about DH Lawrence ‘Priest of Love’ you may like it. I liked it. Thanks for making this video on Sons and Lovers, glad I stumbled on your channel through The Pickwick Papers!

Make sure you read the Rainbow if you haven't read Women in Love. The latter is a sequel. I'm reading the Rainbow right now; it's an interesting book. Can't say it's my favourite Lawrence novel, but it's interestingly told.
