There are a lot of accounts of that happening from the era, so good on Sucker Punch for doing their research and finding something cool from real history. Secondly, the Khan in this scene isn't disrespecting the samurai by setting Adachi on fire. From the Mongol perspective, it's a massive insult from the Japanese to send a nobody to demand single combat with them. In Mongol culture, family lineage was far less important than in Japanese culture, and having a distinguished family name meant nothing if you couldn't back it up with actual merit. To a Mongolian, someone demanding to fight them in single combat just because they have legendary ancestors, would be viewed as impudent and weak, unable to stand on their own merit. This, btw, is why Khotun Khan accepts a fair fight against Jin later, on the bridge, when he could just have Jin killed or captured easily. Jin has earned the right to a duel at that point, by killing a bunch of mongol soldiers beforehand.

The best thing about this scene is that it really tells us WHO Khotun Khan is. He is the acting Khan of the Mongol invasion of Japan. He has studied, trained and learned everything he could about his enemy, their culture, their practices, their beliefs and their people, while the people of Tsushima and the whole of Japan were in times of relative peace. He came not to respect the culture, but to conquer it and then sublimate it into the Mongol Empire. He is a ruthless, cunning and powerful figure who will use everything at his disposal to win... which is why Sakai Jin has to do the same. Khotun Khan already knows the Samurais' tricks and tactics, and knows how to combat them effectively, as shown in this scene and in a scene later on where they use explosive horses on a bridge. Being a Samurai against the Khotun Khan WILL NOT WORK. The game has shown us this from the OPENING FUCKING SCENE! Khotun Khan is a fictional character, but is utterly deserving of the name of "Khan"! Wonderful work, Sucker Punch, just from this scene alone. The rest of the game is just as good, if not better. The Last of Us 2 did not deserve ANY awards, and this game deserved many. It's too bad the public votes were only taken to be about 5% of the voting weight, while the pre-selected jury of "game journalists", which we all know are fucking terrible gamers and not at all experts, were the ones who had the most weight in the voting, and they very obviously chose the shittiest game I've ever fucking seen, The Last of the Us 2, to vote for Game of the Year... What’s funny is anyone who’s at all familiar with how samurai REALLY behaved during this time period know it wouldn’t have gone down like this. The samurai would have charged them with arrows raining and little to no warning at all. They would have leveraged every possible advantage they could against the Mongols. This whole code of honor that’s a core part of the story in this game is all bullshit. It didn’t become a thing until the late Edo period. During this period and even more so during the sengoku-jidai period samurai were absolutely RUTHLESS combatants. There was no dishonorable way to kill your opponent. You just killed them by whatever means necessary.
This opening sequence was the reason why I unloaded every sticky bomb and explosive arrow I had while Khotun was running towards me in the ship. He taught me well.

Fuck that! Ghost of Tsushima won the People's Choice award, which is in truth the only award that really matters. No matter what anyone says, Ghost of Tsushima is the Game of the Year. The Last of Us 2 can burn in fucking hell. TLOU2 has the single worst written story I've ever seen in a video game... while Ghost of Tsushima is one of the best I've ever fucking seen in a video game.
I applaud Sucker Punch for all their hard work, and wait with bated breath for what they do next.
splendid explanation. couldnt have said it better.
You couldnt go through a monologue praising GOT without shitting on TLOU2 huh? I wonder how terrible it feels to be so angry over a video game
@@rockycuro7737 TLoU2 was in direct competition with Tsushima during the game awards, and for some ungodly reason won over it.
Shitting on TLoU2 was absolutely within reason.
@@guikoi3101 no it's not. Especially not in the crybaby way you did it
@@rockycuro7737
You're right. TLoU2 can't be a competitor to Tsushima because Tsushima is great and TLoU2 is shit.
However, at the time of writing the original comment, it WAS in direct competition to Tsushima during the game awards. If you open your eyes and do the smallest of google searches, you'd know that. So complaining about it was reasonable, as there is a direct connection between the two games because of their involvement with the game awards.
Secondly, my complaining being in a "crybaby way" is completely subjective to you. You're complaining about my complaining in a very crybaby way, you crybaby.
The Shogun himself was first? That's a yes from me
Wasnt the shogun, was a general in the Jitos army
@@Frost3yte he was talking about Coryxkenshin we call him the shogun
Shogun=Samurai. I’m sure you knew that.
@@danielatkins1951 no the shogun is the leader of the samurai
A Shogun is sort of a military leader of the country back then. The highest position is the Emperor, followed by the Shogun, then the Daimyo, then Samurai, with the lowest being Peasants.
Why follow the rules when you can make the rules.
Lol exactly. That's the difference between mongols and japanese..
After hearing an explanation and reading history, it turns out the Mongol invasion consisted of 3 ethnic groups, Mongolian, Chinese, and Korean support, they set targets on the islands of Tsushima and Iki, but Japanese warriors and samurai were able to defeat them but I thought there was help beyond human limits. also namely nature. really happy with this sucker punch masterpiece, I learned history, which I didn't care about.
Japan actually got really lucky because storms out at sea sank a lot of the Mongolian ships. Lord knows what would’ve happened had that storm that it.
Jp warriors didnt defeat them a storm came in and cancelled da war. They say dat kamisama protected Tsushima from war
XEA I know, I was just kind of abridging it lol. I don’t think they ever actually met in battle.
XEA oh, my bad lol
@@xeacarons Wrong, the Japanese defeated(or at least hold off) the Mongols enough for them to have to rely on reinforcement to back their invasion. Only for the storm to smash their reinforcement. They should have studied the weather too if they were planning a naval invasion.
Before the samurai fire you can see one single arrow fly as it was samurai tradition to begin battle with a single arrow being fired the attention to detail is amazing
I loved it. I loved the samurai's ego to demand mongols to fight according to his demands and I loved the mongol's indifference to his honor. Executed on spot. So satisfying.
Oh yeah coryxkenshin. Makes me happy!❗️

I just finished and got the Platinum today. An amazing game. The ending had me tear up. Depending on Cyberpunk this game is my GOTY hands down. An amazing experience from start to finish.
Same nothing to do after platinum tho, kinda sucks
I don't think Cyberpunk will make it into this year's Game Awards because of its release date. Same thing happens with Jedi Fallen Order, which launched last year but will probably be nominated for GOTY this year.
@Bock728 between this, FFVII, and maybe Cyberpunk.

It's like he force his reaction and talks.
I miss the old pewdiepie when he still play The Last of Us and other games like in.. around 2013 - 2015.
He really talk about the game and the reality stuff.
DB T I still like Felix but not when he streams games.Talked over most of the Japanese dialogue or read the chat, so in the end he says the story was lacking. He loved the game though and still gave it an 8.9/10.

To mongol proclaiming your ancestors is some hella disrespect since it just means u ain’t done shit to deserve your praise other than the nuts you came out of.
@Captain Lazypants It feels more like a line the developers add to the game rather than something the leader of the Mongols would say. Khotun Khan, though he didn't exist in real life, would be a nobody as well since Genghis pretty slap every cheeks he every see
Was waiting for someone to point out that the big guy is Attila the hun! 😂 I said it was him when I played it but didn’t know it was actually him till I saw it on twitter😂
That’s Attila the Hun? I thought it was Genghis when he First appeared but later thought he was Khotun Khan after he said he was

Khan: "Samurai, Do you Surrender?"

That throat singing in the background made the scene even more badass. God!!!
Ik he samurai and all but it was pretty stupid walking into a group of enemies by yourself not gonna lie 😂
Thank you someone realize how stupid tht was
yes but a proposition was offered but yeah you clearly see how that turned out
Jordan R they wanted to break the enemies’ spirit, they probably didn’t realize that the Mongols didn’t want ro be respectful
Lone Shinobi as person living in Japan and someone who is playing this game right now, this honor thing makes me cringe.
5:55 ish is my favorite.
"That's it, that's the game? That was worth $60, holy shit."
This opening sequence was the reason why I unloaded every sticky bomb and explosive arrow I had while Khotun was running towards me in the ship. He taught me well.

I HIGHLY recommend trying out the Japanese voicetrack as the voiceactors do an phenomenal job, sadly the lipsync is only in English but still.....I prefer it in Japanese.
Adachi-Spouts a bunch of stuff about his ancestors and who he is and that he wants to fight Khotun.
Khotun- "You done? Okay, now let me show you how much I care"

"that's the game? That was worth 60 dollars?"

I really like the "Japanese" version when Kutan screamed "Samurai" much better. Just gave me chills and was much more intimating.
This game is INSANE! What a superb game. GOTY hands down.

Cool compilation, but what I REALLY want to see you do next is a compilation of gamers reacting to the scene shortly after this one, where the main Mongol says, "I am Khotun, cousin of Kublai, grandson of Genghis." I want to see their reactions to this guy revealed as being related to Genghis Khan.
First one was funny asf because he be roasting Adachi throughout the whole walkthrough more then the mongols 😂 🔥

The best part about Cory's reaction is that during the Masako side quests, he keeps referring back to this moment 😂
