    Thank you so much for the awesome video of the Grand loop. Great information. Also it was great talking with you on the way back from stehekin last Friday. Looking forward to doing the loop this year. Jeff

      Hey Jeff, yeah it was great meeting you on the ferry. Let me know what you think after doing the loop. Enjoy, you've got some great wilderness there on the peninsula. Cheers!

      If you do,take the time to experience Thousand Acre Meadows, Haydon Pass and the view from the top of Mt.Fromme.

    After having done a section hike of the PNT last year, I'm looking to have my buddy join me for a trip in Olympic. This video has put the Grand Loop at the top of the list. Thank you for taking the time to put this together!

      Thank you. Yeah you should do it. There are some really spectacular areas along this loop. I'm thinking of doing it again myself. Cheers!

    Knew before I even clicked on the comments that there would be a Water Filter Cop here - Wasn't disappointed, or maybe I was...Anyway, great video!

      Thanks, yeah I've had a few comments from time to time on my videos about filtering water. I guess squeeze bottle filters are relatively new to backpacking and not everyone is familiar with them yet.

      @@cascadiahiking In the Oly's and Cascades, I rarely filter my water, but am very selective on where I source from. Never had giardia in my 40 years of backpacking

      Ah, I see. Yeah, we're blessed the have plenty of good water sources here. Many running steams through rocks, moss, and other natural filters.

    20:24 Not sure how many people realize the magnitude of this particular shot. The peak with glaciers in the background is Mt. Cameron and your route took you around that and just this side of the prickly peaks on the left to get to the point where you were at this moment in the video.
    I did part of the same loop in September 1997, albeit from the Dosewallips. You could drive to Muscott Flats back then. We went over Greywolf, past Three Forks to a destroyed shelter on day 1 - 27 miles. Went over Cameron and Lost Passes the next day and all the way to the vehicle on the Dosewallips - 22 miles. Sadly, the images of the trip have faded from my mind and I’m now 26 years older. But there simply isn’t any legitimate excuse when I see these mountains everyday across Hood Canal. Well, except for a very busy job.

      Hi @Smiths_Son_Ian, those were some high mileage days you had during your trip in 1997. Thanks for pointing out that shot. That was Day 3 and when I was on the Grand Ridge trail looking across at Cameron, I had to stop for a moment to see it in context with the surrounding mountains. I continue to be amazed at the beauty of this park. We're lucky to have had the chance to experience it. Thanks for the comment. I really enjoyed reading it from someone who's been there and obviously knows a lot about the place.

      @@cascadiahikingThere are some open loops I hope to do someday that include some of this loop. Like going up the Elwha to Hayden Pass to the Dosewallips and then out via Grand Valley and Lillian Ridge. Or Come up the Dosewallips and out the same. There are so many options.

    I'm starting to plan for a trip this summer. Do you wish you would have taken an extra day or broken up the hike differently?

    • @cascadiahiking
      @cascadiahiking  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In this case no, 3 days was the right amount. I was solo so I like hiking most of the day. When I'm solo I can get a bit bored if I get to camp too early. If I were hiking with others then it's a totally different story. Then, I'd most likely do an extra day on this route. Plus 3 has a good amount of gain. My friends would be cursing me by the end of the first day! Hope that helps.

    I see on my trail app it says a massive chunk of the trail is a primitive trail. What are these types of trails like?? I’ve only walk on well beaten down paths in Olympic. Are the primitive trails pretty over grown and easy to lose?

    • @cascadiahiking
      @cascadiahiking  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The section up and down Cameron Pass and the section from Lost Pass to the Dosewalips (short and steep) were not the typical well maintained trails that you'd find in other heavily used areas of the park. That being said, I never felt like I wasn't sure where the trail was or that it was overgrown in areas. There is still a trail that is easy to follow in those areas I mentioned. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    I don't see an option for a permit for lost pass campground on the recreation permit site. Is it no longer a campground?

    • @cascadiahiking
      @cascadiahiking  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I ran into the same problem when I tried to book that campsite. You can call the wilderness information center and they can apply that campsite to the reservation if its available. Cheers!

      If you head a little further south for a few more miles on Lost Pass Trail, Dose Meadows camp ground was pretty dope at the junction. I stayed there while doing a PNT section hike last year. Recommended.

    • @cascadiahiking
      @cascadiahiking  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I've been shooting in HLG3 (closest would be PP10) for most of the videos. In my most recent video (LakeShore Trail) I shot in PP1 to make post processing more efficient (no color grading, colors were straight from camera). I'm pretty happy with the footage. Cheers.

    The trail map is opening up on the AllTrails app… any idea why I can’t find it there?

    • @cascadiahiking
      @cascadiahiking  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kurt, You may need the Alltrails Pro subscription in order to save it to your phone. I also have the route on Gaia GPS if you have that app: www.gaiagps.com/public/MUFusyyC329Wneno7E5ZHl2j. Gaia might be the same in that you need a certain subscription in order to save the Map to your phone.

    When is the best season to hike these trails?

    • @cascadiahiking
      @cascadiahiking  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, late-July to mid-Sep would be my recommendation. At that point the snow is typically melted out on the high passes.

    Would rather hear the sounds of nature that annoying music.

    Giardia is a real thing.

      Thanks for the feedback. I've been evolving the videos a bit and will be omitting music in sections to hear the natural sounds. As for filtering, it's hard to see it in the video but there actually is a filter integrated into the cap of the bottle. All the best!
