  • Maxx Crosby has had a dominant start to the 2021 NFL season, yet his name is hardly brought up in DPOY discussions. Yet another example of why sacks are an overrated statistic.

    Unsurprisingly another great breakdown, Mike!
Interesting how, as of Wed 11/17, PFF has Crosby with the #1 pass-rush grade among edge defenders, but he isn't even in the top 10 (public listing) of ESPN's Pass Rush Win Rate. (I can only see the top 3 public PFF grades, but Garret is #2 in both measures, and T.J. Watt is #4 & 5 respectively). I could assume ways a player could perform well & not have it noticed by ESPN's metric (given how I understand it works), but it'd be nice if the creators of popular advanced metrics explored their conflicts with one another, so we didn't have to blindly trust them as much (or at least know when to use one, and when to use another).

Yep, and it’s even stranger that he’s not in the top 10 of ESPN’s PRWR when No. 10 has a 22% score, while he’s now No. 1 in PFF’s PRWR with a 28.9%. Like you alluded to, I get that there will be differences, but that kind of disparity is a little questionable. Fwiw, I tend to favor PFF’s PRWR, as they usually align more with other pass rush stats as well, but it’s always good to at least look at both.

@@MikeKennedyNFL Wow! I hadn't seen any of PFF"s win-rate numbers, but I'd have to side with that too, because I assume it's film-derived (assuming they count it as a win if it's within 2.5 seconds, like ESPN does, and not if it's a "coverage win"). I like that ESPN's is objectively derived from the pad tracking data, but I could see it failing to reward a player who beats a blocker/creating pressure without separating much from their blocker (bull-rushing, etc). Though, I haven't seen enough of Crosby this season to know if he's had a lot of those kinds of wins. PFF has so many writers, they should have someone write up a piece arguing that their win-rate is superior, lol.

I think he’s copying some of Renfrow’s jukes on the pass rush.
