When I was nine, playing left field in Little league a guy hit one deep I was running for it, overran it by a little and caught it behind my back, the crowd, small crowd, went crazy...one of the best moments of my life...I'm sixty...I still remember it like it was yesterday. Every kid should play little league baseball.
I’m 61, and still remember making a diving catch when I was playing centerfield. I LOVED playing little league, high school , college, then church league softball. Wouldnt mind playing now!
My first day of little league I was put in right field and had no idea how far to stand off the line. Sure enough first pitch the ball was hit right down the line so I ran and dove and the ball ended up in my glove. I told the coach I wanted to play second base because I didn't have much of an arm. He laughed and said your in the outfield. 😆
My son was pitching in the final inning of a tournament championship game. There was one out with runners on 2nd and 3d. The batting team was down by two. The hitter hit a blistering ground ball to the third base side of the mound. My son dived to his right, slapped the ball down while falling. He grabbed the ball and his only play was to first. He had no time to gather himself so he threw from his knees. Got the man at first by an eyelash. The 3d base coach sent the 2nd runner to tie the game. The 1st baseman cut the runner down at the plate with a perfect throw. They won 4-3, but the thing I'll never forget was the look on my son's face when he threw the guy out from his knees. Pure joy as the crowd erupted. It was a big regional LL tournament so there were 5-600 people in the stands It's gratifying to know he's felt that indescribable feeling of a crowd roaring its approval for something you've accomplished. We've talked about it and he says the thing he remembers most was how everything happened in slow motion and he knew exactly what to do. I think that's called being in 'the zone'. It's a great memory for us both.
Ben Revere at 5:40 my favorite. Full speed into the wall. If he let's up, the ball clears him. If he doesn't brace for impact he gets concussed. He somehow leaps into the wall to soften the impact while locating and catching the ball directly over his head. Then he comes off the wall in perfect balance. Maybe the greatest combo of feel, athleticism and baseball skill I've ever seen in one catch.
Thanks for bringing that up, on second look you're right that catch is absolutely insane! He had to track it looking up and behind first to his left then turning to his right , then jumps and catches while his back is to the Ball 5 feet in the air!! THATs insane !

The Jim Edmonds catch at the start is still the greatest catch I have ever seen. I would like to add that the Otis Nixon catch in 1992 over the fence to preserve the Atlanta Braves win streak when they had 1 hit (a solo home run from David Justice) should be listed among the greatest catches as well, not only for the catch but also for the atmosphere.
That Otis Nixon catch was in fulton county stadium and I have never seen anyone go over the wall to rob a homer in that stadium. so I would have to say that's the best I've ever seen.

It only took Mays 1.3s to catch, spin and fire an on the fly throw to the cutoff man...who was still about 300 feet away from where he was in dead center at the Polo Grounds. Multiple feats of crazy athleticism on display.
The Mays catch is so overrated. You must not have ever played. He just ran to a spot and waited for the ball, compare Edmonds and Reveres over the head catches and Mays does not even come close!!

Bo Jackson should have had two catches on here. He did just as well as any of them that pulled the ball back from going over the fence. And then there is that catch he made where he ran on the fence. And he had some great mid field catches.
Bo was a negative defender, plain and simple. He had what? one robbed HR (against Jack Clark). And running up the fence? He caught the ball, took 6 full strides before he even got to the fence. Him running up the fence was absolutely no factor in the catch, other than a cheap thrill.
Amen. Just about to type the same comment. Bo had the most legendary and beautiful dive-and-roll mid-field catches i've EVER seen. The distance run (where he wasn't even in the camera frame), the superhuman speed, the flight through the air, the cartwheel-like turn in mid-air, catching the ball in the middle of the cartwheel, the perfect form on the roll, in which he usually landed ON HIS FEET in perfect running stride. I think the only reason people overlook those amazing catches is that he made them look so easy, and he did it many times to where people just expected that kind of athleticism from him. But no one else caught a ball the way he could; definitely should have at least one in this video...

Missed one from 1970, Willie Mays and Bobby Bonds converged on a deep fly to right center. Both leaped high at the fence and collided and fell to the ground. Mays had the wind knocked out of him when he fell onto Bonds' knee. With Willie still laying on the ground, Bonds reached into Willie's glove and pulled to ball out.

I would add in 69 Mets-Orioles WS when Mets threw some serious leather around that series. Tommie Agee had 2 in one game including the first one snow cone catch and saving 5 runs in all...then next day Ron Swoboda made a ridiculous catch laid out in right field saving game for Mets. The best Griffey Jr. ever made was in Detroit in 96. His entire arm was over the fence in the old stadium. Also, Jay Buhner made a catch in Boston falling into the bullpen similar to Betts' play.
That catch Griffey made was when he shattered his wrist. Kenny Lofton going above the Wall at Jacobs field to pull in a homerun was one that wasnt on the list
Kevin Pillars at 7:05 was absolutely ridiculous, that's like an 8-10foot wall he climbs and jumps off with just enough hang time to rob the HR ball. Funny Rajai Davis had a similar catch at the Rogers Center but Pillars was just a bit more dramatic and impressive.

1:27 I used to work at the Ballpark in Arlington. Most people don't realize how high those outfield fences were in Arlington. Of course, that's around the same spot where a fan fell to his death when trying to catch a ball tossed to the stands by Josh Hamilton. The Gary Mathews Jr catch was simply impossible. In my opinion, it will always be the greatest catch in MLB history! PERIOD! Interesting side note: Shortly after the amazing catch, Gary Matthews was a free agent. The Angels gave him about $100 Million more than he probably deserved. So that incredible catch at 1:30 probably ended up being the most expensive catch in Angels history.

All great plays but they left off four of the best ever -- the catch by Swoboda in the 69 world series, the Bo Jackson catch where he runs up the wall, the Ozzie Smith catch over his shoulder where he dives over the outfielder coming in, and McGee in the 82 series.

Actually, the batter was Tom Tresh when Yaz made that phenomenal catch. It was Elston Howard who broke up Rohr's no-hit bid with a single a little later that same inning.

Nobody, I mean NOBODY had as many Gold Gloves as Willie Mays. Years later Willie said he knew he would catch the ball, he was concentrating on getting his feet set for the throw.

(Ted Williams is quoted as saying that Willie Mays had the greatest throwing arm that Ted had ever seen). Running at full-speed toward a fly ball is much less demanding than coordinating all the elements involved in Willie's unmatched catch.

The thing about Willie Mays' catch is that (as he says) it is the catch--but it's the throw after the catch...he nailed a direct throw to get the guy out (I believe it was at home). Also, Willie says he used to make those catches on a regular basis at the Polo Grounds...this wasn't any kind of one-off catch, by any means.
Actually, he didn't throw anyone out. There were runners on first and second and Larry Doby, the runner on second, tagged up and went to third. Willie's quick throw, however, kept Doby from taking TWO bases and scoring on the fly-out--a distinct possibility, as the ball was hit so deep.

Given that it was 480 feet to dead center in the Polo Grounds, Willie Mays running down Vic Wertz's fly to the warning track has to be the single greatest defensive play ever caught on film. Glad to see it included. As the old joke goes, that's a home run in any other park including Yellowstone.

You should have gone back to the 1969 World Series where the NY Mets had 3 great catches, 2 by centerfielder Tommie Agee, both of them in the same game 3, and 1right fielder Ron Swoboda in game 4. They were made even more spectacular because all 3 were instrumental in the Miracle Mets winning the biggest upset in World Series history. After losing the 1st game, the Mets wound up sweeping 4 straight from the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles.
And how about Joe Rudi spearing Denis Menke's drive at the wall in the 9th inning of game 2 of the 1972 World Series? It saved the game and ultimately helped to save the series for Oakland.

He sprinted a good 25-35 yards (just from what's visible in the highlight) and couldn't stop in time, hence the run up the wall. The catch alone is one that many Major League outfielders couldn't do..

Eric Byrnes catch at 1:46 or so is underrated. He ran as fast as he could and fully extended to make that grab. Insane.

Bo Jackson should have had two catches on here. He did just as well as any of them that pulled the ball back from going over the fence. And then there is that catch he made where he ran on the fence. And he had some great mid field catches.
Bo was a negative defender, plain and simple. He had what? one robbed HR (against Jack Clark). And running up the fence? He caught the ball, took 6 full strides before he even got to the fence. Him running up the fence was absolutely no factor in the catch, other than a cheap thrill.
Amen. Just about to type the same comment. Bo had the most legendary and beautiful dive-and-roll mid-field catches i've EVER seen. The distance run (where he wasn't even in the camera frame), the superhuman speed, the flight through the air, the cartwheel-like turn in mid-air, catching the ball in the middle of the cartwheel, the perfect form on the roll, in which he usually landed ON HIS FEET in perfect running stride. I think the only reason people overlook those amazing catches is that he made them look so easy, and he did it many times to where people just expected that kind of athleticism from him. But no one else caught a ball the way he could; definitely should have at least one in this video...

Missed one from 1970, Willie Mays and Bobby Bonds converged on a deep fly to right center. Both leaped high at the fence and collided and fell to the ground. Mays had the wind knocked out of him when he fell onto Bonds' knee. With Willie still laying on the ground, Bonds reached into Willie's glove and pulled to ball out.

Kirby Puckett's catch in game six 1991 World Series. Game saver. Twins won the series the next day. BIG MISS by you guys.
For me, the amazing thing about Kirby's catch was his immediate throw from the left field wall to 1st, coming close to picking off the runner before he could tag back.
I would add in 69 Mets-Orioles WS when Mets threw some serious leather around that series. Tommie Agee had 2 in one game including the first one snow cone catch and saving 5 runs in all...then next day Ron Swoboda made a ridiculous catch laid out in right field saving game for Mets. Also Joe Rudi I think in 1972 World Series with that I call the "look up catch" just incredible his reaction to the ball. Great Stuff. Thanks for posting.

The best Griffey Jr. ever made was in Detroit in 96. His entire arm was over the fence in the old stadium. Also, Jay Buhner made a catch in Boston falling into the bullpen similar to Betts' play.

Kevin Pillars at 7:05 was absolutely ridiculous, that's like an 8-10foot wall he climbs and jumps off with just enough hang time to rob the HR ball. Funny Rajai Davis had a similar catch at the Rogers Center but Pillars was just a bit more dramatic and impressive.

Exactly. Half the other 'over the fence catches' the walls are, like, Mike Trout's exact height. Davis and Pillar's catches are so high up there - if perhaps a little less 'on the run'.

CROSLEY FIELD in Cincy had one and I saw one of the best centerfielders in baseball race up the terreas, fall, reach out his arm and have the ball hit the palm of his glove and fall out and be charged with an error! I saw it with my own eyes and I knew that call was WRONG!!!

1:27 I used to work at the Ballpark in Arlington. Most people don't realize how high those outfield fences were in Arlington. Of course, that's around the same spot where a fan fell to his death when trying to catch a ball tossed to the stands by Josh Hamilton. The Gary Mathews Jr catch was simply impossible. In my opinion, it will always be the greatest catch in MLB history! PERIOD!
Interesting side note: Shortly after the amazing catch, Gary Matthews was a free agent. The Angels gave him about $100 Million more than he probably deserved. So that incredible catch at 1:30 probably ended up being the most expensive catch in Angels history.

Just came to watch the Edmonds catch again. The one to end the no-hitter was the most consequential. Torii Hunter robbing Bonds back when his head was still sort of normal-sized. Ichiro caught it while he was on the way back DOWN. What a collection.

All great plays but they left off four of the best ever -- the catch by Swoboda in the 69 world series, the Bo Jackson catch where he runs up the wall, the Ozzie Smith catch over his shoulder where he dives over the outfielder coming in, and McGee in the 82 series.

Nobody, I mean NOBODY had as many Gold Gloves as Willie Mays. Years later Willie said he knew he would catch the ball, he was concentrating on getting his feet set for the throw.
In his prime, Willie Mays could have made all of the other players' catches bare-handed. End of story.
@Ab Cd MD. PHD. Willie Mays not only had to time his catch - his speed/movement/positioning precisely - he also had to be in position to throw back to the infield to prevent runners from advancing. (Ted Williams is quoted as saying that Willie Mays had the greatest throwing arm that Ted had ever seen). Running at full-speed toward a fly ball is much less demanding than coordinating all the elements involved in Willie's unmatched catch.

Eric Davis made three home run robs back in 1987 that were insane. Ken Griffey Jr robbing Jesse barfield, Yankee Stadium 1990. Ken Griffey Sr with an amazing home run rob Yankee Stadium 1985. Otis Nixon robbing Andy Van Slyke 1992 was simply amazing.
Griffey's Barfield robbery was better than the one shown here. I think this one is more popular because he broke his wrist doing it.

The thing about Willie Mays' catch is that (as he says) it is the catch--but it's the throw after the catch...he nailed a direct throw to get the guy out (I believe it was at home). Also, Willie says he used to make those catches on a regular basis at the Polo Grounds...this wasn't any kind of one-off catch, by any means.
Actually, he didn't throw anyone out. There were runners on first and second and Larry Doby, the runner on second, tagged up and went to third. Willie's quick throw, however, kept Doby from taking TWO bases and scoring on the fly-out--a distinct possibility, as the ball was hit so deep.

Given that it was 480 feet to dead center in the Polo Grounds, Willie Mays running down Vic Wertz's fly to the warning track has to be the single greatest defensive play ever caught on film. Glad to see it included. As the old joke goes, that's a home run in any other park including Yellowstone.

You should have gone back to the 1969 World Series where the NY Mets had 3 great catches, 2 by centerfielder Tommie Agee, both of them in the same game 3, and 1right fielder Ron Swoboda in game 4. They were made even more spectacular because all 3 were instrumental in the Miracle Mets winning the biggest upset in World Series history. After losing the 1st game, the Mets wound up sweeping 4 straight from the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles.
And how about Joe Rudi spearing Denis Menke's drive at the wall in the 9th inning of game 2 of the 1972 World Series? It saved the game and ultimately helped to save the series for Oakland.

Chavez is 1, because it was Game 7 of the NLDS, saved the season (for 2 innings). And the camera work really gave you a sense of him knowing exactly what he was doing.

Those two along with Edmonds are what comes to my mind as the greatest catches.
