I think the reason why they didn’t show up many flashbacks of Pope Benedict story is because it just wouldn’t match with the way he’s portrayed in the movie. Joseph Ratzinger is an genius and humble man who always wanted to be a teacher and keep studying/writing about theology… not a political cardinal who struggles to become pope as soon as John Paul II dies and uses the Truth as a political trick.
I just found the channel recently. Thanks for the review. Please consider reviewing “The Young Pope” and “The New Pope” on HBO. Is there anything for us as Catholics in those shows?
I actually started watching this show a couple months back but need to continue through the first season. I'd love to do a review of it after I get a little further in and have a better grasp of it!
As for Pope Francis, I gotta say I liked how they went deep into his past, and had the guts to explore his involvement and later regret with the Argentinian dictatorship. They really got a lot of things about him done right… but then there’s also a lot of differences with reality. He publicly said what he thinks of ideologies, of homossexual matrimony and is definitely not the “God does change” figure we ser in the movie. They got his personality right and he was beautifully portrayed by Jonathan Pryce, but you can definitely see they didn’t look much for his theological formation.
I'm glad you noticed the overt biased in portrail. Bergoglio is made to look like this sweet progressive, man of the poor and wise guy. with a heartwarming past of suffering. While Pope Benedict as the rigide, outdated, hated and even racist (they called him nazi in 2 different instances, also the "NEIN") authoritarian figure. Outside of Anthony Hopkins' performance, I disliked this movie very much. This was for me nothing but a cheap attack on Catholic traditions. PS: I'm really not a fan of the current pope's politics and direction.

Also, welcome to the channel! :)

I thought Anthony Hopkins German accent, while subtle, was pretty good. A very strong German accent would have been exhausting anyway

Couldn’t agree more!
