If you want the color correction to ONLY be applied to the skin (and not to the rest of the photo), here's what you should do. 1. Follow the steps in this video to set up your color-correcting-curves adjustment layer. 2. Invert the curves adjustment layer. 3. Paint in white on the adjustment layer's mask to reveal the color correction on just the areas you paint. Have fun!

Or is it only possible on the desktop version? How can I fix it to use your good technique? Thanks for your request an have a beautiful Sunday.
Ezra you did a great job and explanations are wonderful. Love your videos. However I had two people in a picture and hoping skin color of each would be the same and they did not match in color. Can you make a video showing how to do this??
You can use the technique shown in this video, but you will need to make two Curves Adjustments, and then mask each adjustment of to the person you are color correcting.
Just wanted to say Thank you for this technique. I've used it to match skin tones from two different pics, first getting the average colors from both pics, then using the Info, and Curves to match them. The only difficulty I've encountered is in trying to match the color data without crushing the curves. I assume that when this happens, the two colors are just too out of range to meet. Anyway, thanks again for this video.
Ya, that is a problem you can run into. My recommendation is to keep the curves just barely above getting crushed. I'm glad you're finding the technique to be useful! 😊

When I use average blur the swatch becomes transparent unlike yours which is opaque and gives strange results. I have a similar problem with another of your videos which I tried and which uses the average blur. Any suggestions? You both provide great videos and have been a fan for a number of years.

A group of us, here is New Zealand, were using your video tutorial today, Ally and Ezra. We are big fans. However, things did not work out, which seems not to be a fault in your process. You are using an earlier version of Affinity Photo (on a Mac, thought we use Windows). All of us had the same problem, when we had selected both the Average Selection and the Target Skin Tone, we then chose the Picker and started to move the values of the right hand of the Info Panel. However, seemingly because we are using V 1.7.2 it seems to be a flaw (bug) that the values on both sides of the Info Panel move. This did not happen with just one of our members, but seemingly all of them. Late this afternoon, I have checked this and it happens on our home PC too. Very disappointing, because we love and practice your video tutorials.
The 1.7.2 update has been very buggy for me as well... I'm not sure why so many things got bugs with this new update. I'd post the big you found on the forums. Hopefully they can fix it in the next update: forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/78-photo-bugs-found-on-windows/
@@AffinityRevolution Today have found the problem and it is not Affinity Photo's fault. Here is the message I sent to my students - "Have just run through the video and used my notes. Finally found what seems to be the problem. On my first tries, I kept getting the correct result and it took ages to duplicate the problem we had. Finally, the only way I "could get it wrong", was to have the Curves Layer on top of the Colour Palette Layer, so we must have been doing that. Actually, quite tricky to get in the wrong order!"
Hmm... I'd make sure you have the curve's adjustment layer is above the photo layer. If that's not the problem, post a screenshot on the Affinity forums, and I'm sure someone can help you out. :-) forum.affinity.serif.com/

I cannot get the colour palette to appear on my workpage where I have the image I am working on. All I get is an empty box with corner handles to adjust. I have even tried downloading other colour palettes and using them. I tried this initially on the RAW image, and since have tried it on the jpg image and no change HELP
all good until 11:40 - did it exactly the same, but the values are NOT showing in the info panel. so I have no way to know how to match the colours. help anyone?

Hi, I realize this video is a bit old but I just attempted using this method. First of all, it seems like a really solid approach. One thought I had was to use the vector scope. I isolated large patches of skin, applied the averaging, and used HSL along with the vector scope to put the skin tone on the “I” line. Then I used the Info panel to get the RGB values. Finally, I basically did what you did with a Curves adjustment to make the RGB values agree. Problem is … it doesn’t look good. Hahahahaha!!! So, I’ll look at it again and see where I went wrong. Both avg rectangles matched at the end so that was pretty cool.
@@AffinityRevolution I’d be happy to give you the information on my process, if I am successful, if you are interested. Let me know and I’ll post a video.
It is an interesting way to correct but this affects the color of the whole image not only for the skin, this means extra work to change the color of the background, clothes, hair and so on :)
Normally if a photo need to be color corrected, the whole photo will need it. But if you only want to affect the skin, you can just mask the color correction adjustments onto the skin. 🙂
so is this reverse color grading? Yes, the result looks great, but the starting image was clearly intended to be that blueish color... or am I mistaken?
Yes, this is similar to color grading. But usually color grading is done to add an "Artistic flare" to an image, while color correction is intended to bring the colors back to what they are "supposed to be" in reality.
Yes you can. :-) Or you could apply the curves adjustment to the entire photo, and then paint in black on the parts of the photo that you do NOT want the curves adjustment applied to.
Have fun!

Here is the message I sent to my students -
"Have just run through the video and used my notes. Finally found what seems to be the problem.
On my first tries, I kept getting the correct result and it took ages to duplicate the problem we had.
Finally, the only way I "could get it wrong", was to have the Curves Layer on top of the Colour
Palette Layer, so we must have been doing that. Actually, quite tricky to get in the wrong order!"
@@enthusiaticbeginner Nice job figuring that out!

Thanks so much. I followed your tutorial, however when I select the picker, it is not doing any changes to the image!!! Any idea? Thanks.
Hmm... I'd make sure you have the curve's adjustment layer is above the photo layer. If that's not the problem, post a screenshot on the Affinity forums, and I'm sure someone can help you out. :-)

You guys are awesome!
Thank you! 😊
I try to use that rope option but it won't allow me to do anything than to grab the entire picture. When I click on the rope all I get is a hand that's ready to grab. Help please =)
It's hard me to see what's going on without seeing your screen. I would post your question (with a screenshot) on the Affinity forums. 😊 forum.affinity.serif.com/
I have a problem. I have watched this tutorial over and over. I downloaded the skin colour palette as you suggested, and I have followed your instructions step by step. I cannot get the colour palette to appear on my workpage where I have the image I am working on. All I get is an empty box with corner handles to adjust. I have even tried downloading other colour palettes and using them.
I tried this initially on the RAW image, and since have tried it on the jpg image and no change
HELP
It sounds like the color palette layer is underneath the photo layer. Double check that your layers are in the right order inside your layers panel. 😊
all good until 11:40 - did it exactly the same, but the values are NOT showing in the info panel. so I have no way to know how to match the colours. help anyone?
Hmmm... it's hard to know what's going wrong without being able to see your screen. I'd post your question with a screenshot on the Affinity forums: forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/5-affinity-on-desktop-questions-mac-and-windows/
Question. If you have multiple photos all shot under the same light, can you copy the formula to other photos?
Yes, you could copy the curves adjustment layer you made, and then paste it into other photos that you have opened inside Affinity.
Hi,
I realize this video is a bit old but I just attempted using this method.
Very interesting! I never would've thought of that technique. I hope you can iron out the bugs and get it to work. 🙂
@@AffinityRevolution I’d be happy to give you the information on my process, if I am successful, if you are interested. Let
me know and I’ll post a video.
@@dougdina Yes please! I would love to see your technique in action. 🙂
@@AffinityRevolution Well, I should be done late tonight. I’ll send you the link.
Btw, if you live in the States, Happy Thanksgiving!!
@@dougdina Thank you! Happy Thanksgiving to you as well.
Can u do this with the iPad version? Got stuck on duplicating my selection as a layer:).
Sorry, just saw that the question has been awnsered
I'm glad you got it figured out. 🙂
On soft proof for headshots, which PROFILE should you/ do you use? Thanks!
Hmm.. I'm not sure. I'd ask on the forums: forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/5-affinity-on-desktop-questions-mac-and-windows/
This is awesome !!! thank you!!!
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it! :-)
Could this be done on the iPad?
Unfortunately, no. The iPad version doesn't have the Info panel. 😕
Sad
Anyway you can explain how to do it on the iPad ?
This technique does not work on the iPad, since it does not have the Info Studio. Hopefully they add that feature someday. 🙂

very useful, thank you!
Thank you! 🙂
Awesome video

Newbie question:
How could apply RGB on curves only at a selection zone, not to all image?
Yes you can. :-)
Or you could apply the curves adjustment to the entire photo, and then paint in black on the parts of the photo that you do NOT want the curves adjustment applied to.
Yes I can.
Tks.
